Here’s a look at how the room started when we got our hands on this old, dated house a few months ago. We’re wrapping up the entire house this month with our partners at the Treehouse Group Contracting. They’ve been awesome to work with and everything is looking so great! Get ready for LOTS more pretty spaces from this fun project. :)

BP-274

We pulled out the carpet in here, installed new squared off windows, pulled down yellowed wallpaper and painted the faux beams a soft gray color. Since the ceilings are only about 8.5 ft tall, softening the color of the beams really helped the ceiling to feel higher.

BP-271

BP-270

If you remember from this post, we planned on hanging a soft leaf pattern wallpaper in here, but decided against it in the end. Wallpaper is SO pretty, but I know it’s not a look for everyone. We decided to stick with just white walls in here and let the curtains and the rug be the pattern stars of the room.

Speaking of the rug, Dash and Albert’s Kota rug was really our starting point for the design. The color variation and the pattern here are complete perfection. It really is a gorgeous rug, just like everything from Dash & Albert!

And I LOVE how the DIY grid pattern curtains turned out!  Check out this post for the full tutorial. I used navy and black fabric paint in a brush pen to freehand a grid pattern. It only took a few hours to do all six panels and I’m so happy with how these look hung on our pretty black iron curtain hardware! (Pro tip: skip the clip option in favor of curtain rings and use drapery hooks for a more custom look!)

Those Yucca plants are faux and they are seriously convincing. They are a great price for a really good faux plant (we bought two of them for more fullness).

This gorgeous chair is also from Article. It is the prettiest shade of warm blue gray and I love the wooden frame! Like all of the Article pieces I’ve ever used over the years, these two pieces are completely gorgeous and really well-made.

The striped blanket at the foot of the bed is so fun, and I’m obsessed with the oversized tassels!

Guys, this gorgeous oatmeal linen platform bed is so beautiful! I could not have been more impressed with it when it arrived, especially considering the crazy-affordable price!

Gentry One Room Challenge-29

The pink tassel pillow was a test run for some ideas I’m throwing around for a Juniper Studio pillow line. Tell me, guys. would you buy a pillow this size? I love the blush color and those cute little tassels! I’m having a lot of fun with this new pillow line and I can’t wait to show you guys what we’ve been up to. :)

The beautiful hemstitch white cotton sheets, the rust pillow shams and the SHOCKINGLY SOFT ivory coverlet are all from Pine Cone Hill, a favorite source of mine for gorgeous bedding.

Thanksgiving is a BIG DEAL in my family. We go up to my parents house every year and stuff our faces for like three days straight. :) It’s amazing.

I love making our Thansgiving table look extra special, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on new flatware or expensive china! Here are some table settings we made with clearance items, Amazon finds or easy to source pieces! I think these are all so pretty – it’s hard for me to pick a favorite! :)

I always have a bunch of my favorite white ceramic plates and gold flatware ready to go. These are the perfect base for almost any style of table setting!

Tablescapes for web-6

This first setting idea is a little more on the traditional side. We put an updated spin on your classic Thanksgiving patterned dish (on clearance!) by pairing it with solids in deep, rich colors. Also, can we talk about how amazing this flatware is?! IT’S FROM AMAZON. Find of the century. We have the white and gold set here, but we also used the black and gold in a different setting. I love both so much.

Traditional

Our next look is a little more modern and textural! I love the blush plate with the eucalyptus leaves!

Next up is this bright, bohemian setting. We used this super fun placemat as our base an then layered on some neutral plates (the salad plate is from Joanna Gaines’ new Target line! Love!). This look pairs really well with succulents and cacti instead of flowers, which last a hundred times longer than fresh flowers (bonus!).

Next up is a modern, masculine look. We kept everything fairly monochromatic here, with just a small pop of color in the glass and flowers.

We had a lot of fun putting together these table settings! I hope they gave you some ideas for your own holiday tables this year! Did we miss any of your favorite pieces? Those Crate and Barrel plates are my all-time, forever favorite! :)

This is the last week of the One Room Challenge and we are kicking it in to high gear over here! We are picking up a few final items and plan to install over the weekend! We are so excited to see this room finally come together!

0eec47410cf06d9296a568362e45bcff copy

If you can remember back to our design plan, we had this Arteriors dresser as our inspiration. We fell in love with the color and and lines, but unfortunately it is no longer available.. not to mention it was super pricey. We had seen a few dowel pull dresser DIY’s floating around, but none of them totally fit the bill of what we were trying to do, so we came up with our own version!

Ikea Dresser-3

Ikea Dresser-1 2

Gentry One Room Challenge-1 copy

We picked up one of these dressers and built it to the specifications, leaving the knobs off. Since this is a natural wood piece, we primed over all of the knots to keep them from bleeding through the paint (make sure you use a primer that is says “stain blocker” on the can!). We also filled all of the pre-drilled knob holes. After priming, we painted the entire dresser the most beautiful shade of gray-green, Mizzle by Farrow & Ball.

Screen Shot 2017-11-08 at 10.22.40 AM

We wanted to keep the profile of the brackets super simple and and delicate, but we were struggling to find something that could work for this design. We searched literally every local hardware store for something that would work and we finally stumbled upon these 3/4″ copper connector pieces. We loved the profile, we just had to come up with a creative way to attach them to the drawer fronts.

5I5A8841 copy

We got six wood dowels that fit perfectly into the copper pieces.

5I5A8840 copy

I thought about keeping the brackets copper, but I just love how the brass hardware works with the green color! So warm, so pretty! We just brushed on this metallic craft paint.

IMG_8826 copy

We cut the dowels 4 inches shorter than the length of each drawer and spray painted them white.

Ikea Dresser-8

Once the dowels dried, we inserted them into the brackets. We measured two inches from the end of the dowel and made a mark in the hole so we could drill a pilot hole.

5I5A8995 copy

Once we had our pilot hole drilled, we lined up the dowels and screwed them in from the back side of the dresser.

5I5A8998 copy

We still need to put the back on the IKEA dresser so you can’t see through to the wall! But otherwise, I think this little DIY turned out great!

This week we are tackling the window situation in our master bedroom for the One Room Challenge! This room gets a lot of light, which is so, so pretty, but we really need to add some privacy and some light control in here! I’m planning on woven shades for the windows for practical reasons, but I REALLY love curtains in a bedroom. They really help to soften the space and somehow make it feel safer and more comfortable? I’m a big fan.
gentrybr1-590x692

The added bonus of hanging curtains is you can make smaller windows look bigger or smaller depending on how you hang the rod. I usually hang my rods high and a little wide so windows look bigger and the ceilings feel taller. It really helps to trick the eye!

gentrybr2-590x460

When we were looking at inspiration for this room, I kept coming back to the idea of incorporating a grid pattern, sort of like the the Dash & Albert rug we used Lucy’s dining room. I like that the scaled is modern and sliiiiiightly graphic, but still pretty subtle.

sanfrancisco_jenny-komenda-680x1020-1

lucy_home_remodel_007

We picked up three sets of these basic white linen curtains and to try out a DIY with watercolor paint.

I started by laying out one of the curtain panels on a drop cloth and making a small mark every 5″ to help keep the start of my grid lines spaced correctly. You could use painters tape here to perfectly measure your lines, but we were going for a more organic look, so I decided to freehand it.

2-590x828

I’m am borderline obsessed with following calligraphy artists on instagram and I remembered seeing that one of the artists liked using these watercolor brush pens and thought they could maybe work for this project. I was hoping it would help my lines look more consistent and fluid with the paint constantly feeding into the brush from the well, rather than having to dip and redip every few inches. It looks like most artist just fill the chamber part with just water and dip the brush in their paint, but we filled our brush pen with really diluted watercolor paint to make things really easy and I think it worked great!

Screen Shot 2017-10-31 at 6.34.22 PM

watercolor brush pens

8-590x423

To get this inky blue indigo color I mixed equal parts blue and black watercolor paint together in a water bottle that I kept handy to refill the pen. Isn’t the color so pretty here?

5-590x437

When you squeeze gently, the paint pen will disperse a pretty consistent flow of paint, but every now and then a bubble will cause some extra paint to drip out. Instead of worrying about it, I decided to embrace the irregular look and I think it looks so cool! It sort of looks like this shibori DIY we did last year, right? (PS LOVE that you guys are still tagging me when you try these projects!! It’s so fun to see the colors and patterns you have figured out!)

Gentry DIY curtains-3_preview

Gentry DIY curtains-6_preview

I let this sample dry overnight and this morning when I came into the studio, it was a little lighter than I hoped it would be. I should have guessed that was going to happen, but now I’m trying to decide if I should just keep going with this color. Do you think I should go a little heavier on the black or do you like the indigo as it is here? Here’s a reminder of the room colors:

***Giveaway is now closed! Congrats to Emily! :) ***

There’s a new Arhaus location right by my husband’s office in Phoenix and on a recent lunch date we popped in to check it out. I’ve been a fan since one of my clients introduced me to their online store years and years ago, so it was so fun to finally see all their beautiful products (that are truly so well-made) up close and in person! The space is GORGEOUS and I loved so much of their furniture and accessories! When Arhaus reached out to see if we needed anything for our new design offices, I immediately thought of these green leather dining chairs! The chairs come in a couple different shades, but how perfect is the green for our Juniper Studio offices?

Ar Haus Chairs-1

Ar Haus Chairs-5

We placed them around our new ebony stained oak dining table I designed and had our local carpenter build. We sit here often for meetings and meals when clients are in the office. I love the dark and light contrast with our white shelving! The pop of dark green from the chairs really draws your eye down to our new kitchenette (in a similar shade) all the way at the other end of the studio! These were meant to be ours, right?

Ar Haus Chairs-14_preview

The legs on our new Arhaus chairs are probably my favorite detail. The black metal is so different and so expensive looking (even though these were totally affordable! And they’re on sale right now!). We got the striped jute from Arhaus too and I love the subtle texture and pattern. Arhaus is proud of their team of product buyers who travel to and work with skilled artisans all over the world. And I love that they are committed to using sustainable materials in their products. So cool.

Here are a few images we took at our local Arhaus store. Isn’t this space amazing?! Arhaus products hit that sweet spot of affordability with quality. They want their products to be livable (think washable slipcovers and hidden table leaves) and their goal is for these pieces to last for generations.

We took a little team trip to our local store to pick out out chairs and the rug for our studio and we were all blown away at the gorgeous finds around every corner! This brass and marble table could not be more perfect (and it’s also on sale right now!). And these amazing dining chairs SWIVEL, you guys! You know what that means? No more hopping chairs on the rug or loud screeches and floors getting scratched from chairs sliding in and out during meals! Genius.

One of my favorite ways to make a porch look pretty is to layer a patterned rug under the doormat. The best part about this trend is that there really aren’t any rules. Feel free to play with sizes and scale here! I especially love the plaid look for the holiday season, but any pattern can work!

If you’re up for a bigger project, you can give your house an entirely new look with just a coat of paint. This coral-y pink color is such a bold choice and I’m obsessed with it!

Greenery is always a good look for a front door, but depending on your climate it might not be an option during the winter months (or during the summer months if you live in AZ!). I know it might sound a little funny, but faux plants are AMAZING, you guys! Especially for outdoor spaces. It just takes a little sleuthing to find the right ones. There are only a few types of plants that actually can pass for real (I’ve never seen a fern that looks anywhere close to real, for example). We’ve picked a few good ones for you here below!

We’re thinking of doing a project sort of like this simple DIY for the curtains in our ORC master bedroom space! I love the subtle block print we did here in Lucy’s bedroom!

We’ve got some beautiful windows in the Gentry house project and I want to keep the room bright and light but still have lots of privacy in here obviously! Speaking of bright and light, check out these beams! Love how this spaces is coming together!

Some of our orders have started to arrive and it’s getting us super excited for this room to start coming together. We were especially anxious to open up our Dash & Albert rug and our Pine Cone Hill bedding from Annie Selke.

Ginny Macdonald Dash Albert Rug

We fell in love with the above bedroom from Ginny Macdonald and couldn’t wait to get our hands on this indigo rug from Dash & Albert. I think it is really going to help ground the space and add a much needed pop of color. It’s a stunner in person! :)

IMG_8455-copy-590x658

I usually choose to go neutral on bedding so there can be fun pillows and accessories that pop. I picked these simple hemstiched white sheets and this beautiful ivory coverlet. They are both so soft and gorgeous! I have Pineconehill sheets on my bed at home and they wash SO well.

We will pull in some color and texture with these beautiful terracotta colored linen shams and gray and white striped shams. Won’t these be so pretty with the rug color and the gray-green dresser DIY?

We also ordered this striped throw for either the foot of the bed or to throw over the Tablet ottoman from Article. I thought the stripe was black but it actually a suuuuuuuper dark navy and I’m OBSESSED with it. Love the fringe too!

One of my friends mentioned that she was using this cabin project we finished up last year as inspiration for her new house. She had some questions about some of the sources and asked if she had missed the full reveal post. And I realized we somehow we completely skipped posting about this project on the blog! Which is CRAZY because I love, love, love how it turned out! We’ve posted bits and pieces of some of the spaces, but I thought you might like to see all the rooms in one post with all of the sources. As always, if I’m missing anything, leave a comment!

This client used Sustain Interiors out of Hood River, Oregon as the contractor on this job and I have to add my plug for Heith and his team at Sustain. They are AMAZING to work with and pretty much the nicest, most down to earth people on the planet. Couldn’t recommend them enough if you are renovating or building a vacation property outside of Portland! I also have to throw in HUGE props to Megan Evans, who was working with me when we designed and installed this project. Since we are doing a lot less client work these days, Megan is growing her own design business now and it has been SO cool to see all the great projects she is pumping out lately. I’m obsessed with this bathroom! Go Megan, go!!

This project was two-structures on the same property (here’s a tour of the other cabin!). Both are modest in size, but they pack a big design punch! :) Here’s the great room area.  We used the Hamilton sofa for this space and I loved it in here! (PS if you’re looking for a new leather sofa, check out this epic round up post!)

We designed the bookshelves and Sustain built them on site. They used a local shop Future Folk Supply Co to make the ladder and the barn door hardware in the space and these guys knocked it out of the park! I’ve found that finding local craftsman to make special items like this for your home usually doesn’t cost any or much more than buying readymade stuff online. And the bonus is you get to meet and support great people and you get to have EXACTLY what you want and need for your space. Like, for example, we designed the treads of the ladder to be stained wood and I love the hit of warmth against the bright white cabinetry and the black metal rails. The brass sconces are just the icing on the cake, don’t you think?

Our clients have lived all over the world and they have a really cool collection of art and rugs. This bright Turkish rug was a little too narrow for the room on its own, but pairing it with our favorite jute that has a bit of a lower profile makes it fit the space perfectly!

That amazing plaid chair was a vintage find that we had recovered in a kid-friendly tartan pattern fabric from Pindler. I love it for basically any room, but plaid just seems right for a cabin, don’t you think?

If you have a small entry, the trick to maximizing space is hooks and shelves that help get things up off the floor. In this cabin’s small entry we used a cute wooden bench and baskets combo for shoes and a simple series of wall hooks for jackets and bags. We picked up a simple primed pine board from the hardware store and had them cut it to fit the width of the wall. Then we hung it up by screwing right through the front of the board into wall studs in a few places and we caulked and painted it to match our wall and installed the hooks after everything was dry. So easy!

--6263

The kitchen is in the great room too and we really wanted to go bold with the cabinet color! We picked Narrangansett Green from Benjamin Moore and it’s crazy how the color changes from blue to green at different times of the day! I love it paired with the bright brass pulls and the strong punch of black in the hood we also had made locally.

Our clients really wanted a classic clawfoot tub in here and I LOVE the oval shower curtain rod! Such a cute look with the floor to ceiling white subway tile (the exact opposite of the other cabin’s bathroom that had floor to ceiling black subway tile!). The black ceramic hex floor tile is super practical with kids and is a great way to bring in a modern element here.

We figured out a way to make six twin beds fit in this tiny bunk room! Isn’t it SO cute with all that white shiplap and those cute little red sconces? I love this sweet space!

I love the dark color of the master bedroom walls (it’s Knoxville Gray from Benjamin Moore). We used a lot of the client’s furniture in here and just layered on some new bedding and lighting.

It’s One Room Challenge update time!! Last week we talked about the Farrow & Ball Jasmine wallpaper I have fallen in love with. The pattern is soft and subtle and the taupe color is so warm and happy. I think it will be a great backdrop for poppy art and modern touches! This week we finished selecting furniture for the room. We found a simple, clean-lined upholstered bed from Hayneedle that I like a lot! I think it will be so pretty with the wallpaper and the blue Dash & Albert rug we’ve all been obsessed with here at the office. We ordered the 10×14 size which will be so cozy and soft!

We picked out some of our key furniture pieces from The Mine including those beautiful nightstands as well as a bunch of accessories. The mirror is HUGE and will look great above our dresser, layered with art and that crazy cool lamp.

We picked this GORGEOUS leather bench from Article for in front of the big window and this soft blue gray arm chair for a little reading nook in the corner of the bedroom. I love the detail on the leg detail on the side of the chair! I can’t wait to see these beauties in person!

I’ve long been obsessed with this style of dresser from Arteriors. Those oversized dowel style pulls are just too perfect and that color of green-gray is my favorite shade, especially with that white and gold combo!

0eec47410cf06d9296a568362e45bcff

I might regret making a formal announcement on this, but I think we’re going to try and DIY our own version of this dresser! I picked up this unfinished dresser and we plan to use some t-connector pipes and dowels to create the handles. I’ll be sure to report on how this worked or didn’t work for us!

Any tips or ideas on how we should tackle this DIY? What do you think about our furniture plans? I think this bedroom is going to be SO pretty! :)

Don’t forget to check in on the progress of the other ORC participants!

2017 Overstock Style Weekend and Design Challenge!

A few weeks ago, I had the COOLEST opportunity to go up to Salt Lake City for the first #OverstockSyle Weekend. When I found out that Kirsten from Simply Grove, Cassandra from Coco+Kelley, Dabito from Old Brand New and Ashley from At Home with Ashley were also coming, I knew it was going to be an…

A few weeks ago, I had the COOLEST opportunity to go up to Salt Lake City for the first #OverstockSyle Weekend. When I found out that Kirsten from Simply Grove, Cassandra from Coco+Kelley, Dabito from Old Brand New and Ashley from At Home with Ashley were also coming, I knew it was going to be an amazing time. But little did I know that Overstock was going to roll out the red carpet for us in such a major way! It honestly was one of the most fun work trips I’ve ever been on. I left with sore cheeks from laughing, a tummy full from all the amazing meals, and a mind brimming with inspiration.

1 (3)

We started out by heading to Overstock’s corporate headquarters called Peace Coliseum (it looks like a peace sign from above).

IMG_2869

When we got there they showed us a demo of their new augmented reality app that you can use to literally see thousands of pieces of furniture on their site in your room using your phone. It was SO crazy and it felt like I was getting a peek into the future for all online shopping. I love that Overstock considers themselves to be a tech company too – they are pushing boundaries for sure.

IMG_2871

Next stop, we got to tour the Overstock Dream House up high in the mountains (literally on Mt. Olympus) overlooking the Salt Lake valley below. This mid-century house was completely decked out! Before coming up for the weekend, all of us bloggers sent Overstock a couple of mood boards of furniture we loved from the site.

DiningRoom LivingRoom

Then their design team decorated the house using only Overstock product based on the pieces we really loved! So cool, right? Here’s a little tour!

(If you’re interested in seeing the whole Dream House, click over here! The exterior was gorgeous too!) After our house tour, a private chef made the most amazing five course dinner for us at the Overstock Dream House. Then we karaoked down in the lounge room (with all that gorgeous walnut paneling on the walls!) until the wee hours. It was amazing and completely worth being a little sleepy the morning of the big DESIGN CHALLENGE DAY!!!

IMG_2976

You guys, they told us we were going to the Overstock photo studio for a design challenge, but we had NO CLUE about any of the details. When we arrived at their enormous photo studio early the next morning, we each got to pick an envelope at random. When we opened them we saw that we were each assigned a different color of the same chair. Most of the colors were more neutral but I got THE ORANGE CHAIR!!! Gasp! I was excited for the challenge. :)

IMG_2896

Each of the five bloggers had a room set in the photography studio with wood floors and a neutral color on the walls. Once we were assigned a chair color and a photo assistant and stylist team, they started the clock! We RACED through the Overstock prop house, picking furniture and accessories and lamps and art to use in our rooms all from the Overstock inventory. It felt like I was in a game show! Like a mix of the Amazing Race and that old grocery store game or something! :) It was sort of stressful but mostly SO FUN!

I put together a video of all of my Instagram stories from the design challenge – it was so fun to livestream the excitement!

Here’s a time lapse video of my space. I had fun reliving the day by occasionally pausing the video to see all the different directions we thought about going in before settling on the final look! :)

When the time was up, we did a big Overstock Facebook Live stream of the room reveals with each of the bloggers (you can still watch that video here) and the viewers voted on their favorites spaces. I’m so happy to say that my space won thanks to you guys and your support! Thank you!!! :)

Here’s the finished room from my #OverstockStyle Design Challenge!!

Overstock continued to spoil us the rest of the weekend with amazing meals and outings and just generally a really great time! I have to say, I came into the weekend loving Overstock’s product offering, but I left LOVING OVERSTOCK and what they stand for as a company. They love their customers and they really love their employees. I have so much respect for all they are achieving!

Hello from the airport! Michael and I are headed to High Point Market today for a jam-packed weekend of sourcing for the shop. I’m so excited to see all the beautiful new things this market and to get in some quality brainstorming time with my husband. I think we both have personalities that are about half dreamer and half practical/logical, but as a lawyer, Michael is definitely better at combing through the details! :) I’m so glad he’s around. Besides obviously saving me a ton of money in attorney’s fees, he’s got a great eye and a spot-on instinct. Right now he’s helping me at Juniper on nights and weekends, and burning the candle at both ends a bit, but I love how supportive he is. What a man!!

Speaking of figuring things out, you may have heard me lately talking (a lot) about Simon Sinek’s books Start with Why and then Find Your Why. I can’t recommend them enough if you are at a crossroads with your career or if you need a jumpstart in life. Find Your Why helps you do just that – figure out a personal (or business) mission statement that gets at what makes you tick or what fulfills you. Spoiler alert – it’s probably not what you think it is! I’m digging deep and figuring out so many important things about myself right now. It feels like an exciting time! I hope some of you can use the exercises here too to help take your work/daily tasks to the next level!

I turned 35 this week!! GASP!! This felt like a REALLY BIG birthday to me for some reason? Like way scarier than turning 30!

I’ve been doing some serious retail therapy lately to help soothe my wounded, aging ego and it’s a good thing there are so many great sales happening right now! :)

I’m SO glad you guys loved our DIY black and brass fridge tutorial! :) A lot of you asked about how we made the brackets for the shelf, too.

Studio Kitchen Reveal-3_preview

I made the mounts with 11″ deep mahogany boards available at Home Depot. I cut the four back plate pieces to be about an inch wider than the brackets I had picked on all sides. I didn’t stain the wood – I just used a dark walnut Restor-a-finish to darken and seal it.

Studio Kitchen Painting Fridge-7_preview

Studio Kitchen Shelves-5_preview

I mounted each of the back plates at 18″ above the top of the counters. Then I sprayed some cheap shelf brackets with gold spray paint and mounted those to the wooden back plates. Then the top shelf was screwed into place and we were done!

Studio Kitchen Shelves-1_preview

So simple and I think so unique! We thought a lot about doing a tile backsplash here, but I like the simplicity of just these brackets so much more! :)
