Remember when I was contemplating some fun wall treatments for our powder bath? I thought about wallpapering, doing a faux bois or hand-blocking a pattern, but I wasn’t super excited about any of those…

I’ve always loved Kelly Wearstler’s staircase with it’s hand-painted pattern, but I was worried something  this loose would be weird in such a small bathroom.

When I saw this image, I really liked the idea of using oval or circular shapes.

Then I was looking at Domesticate’s Spoonflower offerings, and this fabric pattern jumped out at me.
I got excited because I knew I could get this pattern up in only a couple hours, so right away I pulled out my mint paint and a 1″ square tipped artists brush, took down the art I had hung before, and was ready to go.

The basic idea is super easy. In general, I did one large shape for every small or medium sized shape. There’s no right or wrong way to do it – really it’s just like doodling on the wall. It took about two or three hours to cover all the walls and the ceiling.

The mint paint I had was gloss, which I think looks really pretty against the satin walls. Gives a little dimension.
One important trick is the dip your brush only every three shapes or so, so there is some variation in the color opacity. This way it looks a little more like water color.

Since the ceiling of the bathroom is dropped and slanted, I went ahead and painted everything.

Once the paint had dried, I hung a bunch of vintage landscapes on the wall. I like how the super traditional paintings look on the funky walls.

Most of these paintings were ones I picked up at flea markets when we lived in Brussels for two or three Euros each. They aren’t masterpieces, but I love them.

I need to take a photo during the day, but I’m so happy with the way the powder bath looks from the hallway with the door open. It really looks like wallpaper.

I know – it’s kind of intense, but I’m loving it! Plus, it would be super easy to paint out or change if I get sick of the look.

Can’t beat a project that makes a big statement, costs nothing and only takes a couple hours!

You know how when a room just won’t come together and then suddenly all the pieces fall into place? I’ve been having a bit of a hard time with our dining room – the space is so awkward (see more here). But today was full of some really big wins. I found a dining table and this GIANT brass chandelier for almost nothing.

It’s hard to tell here, but it’s really huge, the same size as the new table – about 60″ wide! I’m going to paint it (probably pale blue), change up the chain and use round bulbs. I was searching around the web for a similar look for inspiration and look what I found from Decor Demon. It looks like the exact same chandelier, painted with round bulbs!

We had some freak snowy weather yesterday, but this weekend looks like it’ll be warm enough to spray paint (probably the last chance for the next few months). I’m really hoping I can get this chandelier done so I can get going on the rest of my new ideas for the room. Tonight I chose new art, a pair of mirrors and a china cabinet color. I’m so glad things are finally starting to come together. The dining room is the first space guests see when they walk into our house, so I want it to be really pretty. Getting rid of that weird hanging lampshade will be a good start.

Oh, one more quick thing. Do you have any tips for hanging really heavy lights? The chandelier weighs a TON!

Accent Chairs for the Win!

We’ve been working on a client’s living room where a lot of the big pieces were neutral choices (the sofa, the rugs, the tables, the consoles, the lighting and mirrors – all neutral colors). In the first phase of the install we were all feeling good, but had to keep giving each other pep talks…

We’ve been working on a client’s living room where a lot of the big pieces were neutral choices (the sofa, the rugs, the tables, the consoles, the lighting and mirrors – all neutral colors). In the first phase of the install we were all feeling good, but had to keep giving each other pep talks about how it would all look much better after the second more colorful layer goes on. :)

We’ve since added colorful pillows, art, lamps, and a great pair of side chairs inspired by this Jeffrey Bilhuber photo. Let me tell you – those chairs completely transformed my client’s room! (so excited to get this project photographed)

Arch Digest

If you’re on a limited budget and can only change up parts of your living room, I would invest in some new pillows for your sofa (here are some color/pattern ideas) and a new chair or two. These are some easily available and affordable options:

Have you seen any fab accent chairs lately? I’m always on the hunt! They might be my favorite home item to shop for. Next to lamps. (And art.) (and pillows…)

While FLOR tiles aren’t the cheapest flooring option out there, it’s great that they can be cut to fit any space. And I love that the tiles can be replaced if (more like when) major stains happen. In high-traffic areas or in homes with pets and kids, this is a pretty amazing sense of security.

The people at FLOR recommend buying 10% more than your needs just to have on hand. It’s really a good idea to buy at least that much, since there’s a good chance your pattern won’t be available after a year or two.

Here are some of my favorite patterns available at FLOR right now. Have you used these before too?

Fall is probably my favorite season here in New York. Our extended families took advantage of the great weather and the extra space in our new home, so we’ve had people staying with us for more than a month straight. It’s been so great to share our home and city with loved ones, but the only downside was it’s been a little tricky to finish the kitchen with so many people here! One thing we did take care of shortly after moving in was buying a new range. Here’s the before shot:

Well, actually, it is a used range. The landlord gave us money to replace the ancient stove. Not enough to buy a new Viking (the range I’d been dreaming of for years), but I was happy to find this one in perfect used condition. It had been used in a summer house for a few years, and had been recently professionally serviced. We paid $1000 for it, but the landlord picked up most of the bill, so it was a total score. Happiness all around!
PS Tonight I’m putting the last coat of paint on the cabinets (you can see a little sneak peek above)!

It’s the weekend! I’m pretty happy this week is over – what a strange one! Michael and I are welcoming the chance to get out of the house and spend a little quality time together (annnnnnd…away from the kids, who have been out of school all week).
It’s chilly out, so I’ll be breaking in my new winter coat and boots, and also these new waxed denim pants from James Jeans. I love that they look a little bit like leather, but more subtle. They definitely are more forgiving than leather pants, and it’s easier to move in these.

I’m a huge fan of James Jeans. The company (started by a husband/wife duo) cares most about fit and quality, and you can really tell by looking at their clothes. I’ve ordered a couple pairs of jeans from their site before and I love that I can trust that when I order my size, the jeans will fit right and well.

I’m excited they were willing to give away a pair of jeans to THREE readers today! Which pair will you choose? Here are some of my favorites. Mostly I’m loving high-waisted and ankle-skimming cuts – what about you?
To enter, please click here and choose your most favorite pair of jeans, then leave a comment with your choice. Contest closes next Friday at midnight and is only open to US readers. Winners will be emailed, so please be sure to leave contact info or sign in.
AND!! In related, very exciting news, James Jeans is offering a whopping 25% off to LGN readers through the end of November. Just use the code JJ011 during check out.

Chalkboard Kids Table

We’ve had a framed chalkboard in the girls’ room for years (I showed the project here). They loved it a lot, but there wasn’t really a good place for the frame in the new room at the brownstone, so we figured out a new way to have a chalkboard in the room. Here’s what the…

We’ve had a framed chalkboard in the girls’ room for years (I showed the project here). They loved it a lot, but there wasn’t really a good place for the frame in the new room at the brownstone, so we figured out a new way to have a chalkboard in the room.

Here’s what the board and table (which I picked up at Homegoods a long time ago) used to look like in the loft. The table looked okay from the side but top was pretty trashed from years of arts and crafts. It was time for a makeover for sure. Plus, I thought the wood table on wood floor look would not be so cute.

I cleaned and hand-sanded the table down to smooth out the worst of the surface bumps.

Then I rolled out about three or four coats of chalkboard paint. The nice thing about this paint is it dries very fast – which makes it super easy to work with.

I paired the table with chairs found here and here. We keep the chalk sticks in a neon pink acrylic box I picked up at the flea market. I bought the rug at the Madeline Weinrib sample sale in the ABC clearance basement (I think they just had another sale, actually and I’m sad I missed it! Might be worth a call to see if they have any left-overs…)
We’ve been using the chalkboard table for a few weeks and it’s actually working better than I expected even. I think part of that reason is my older girls are able to wipe it down themselves if they want a chalk-free surface. I was also a little concerned that chalk dust would get everywhere, but I haven’t noticed any. Success!

PS There’s another chalkboard project in my future. So, so excited!

I finished reupholstering our old bed frame right before we moved out of the loft, and I still really love it.

Remember how I was trying to figure out what fabric to use? I thought a lot about the color…

I was leaning toward this pretty silk velvet from Kravet, but it was pricey (like, very pricey), but I loved the color and sheen.

Then I stumbled across this really pretty cotton velvet when we were in Arizona this summer, for only $13 a yard at Home Fabrics in Mesa. I bought six yards and had to carry it on with me on the plane right home — it was so heavy! (and I had too many Last Chance finds stuffed in my suitcase)

I used this basic approach to the upholstery process after pulling off the old fabric, but I actually removed some of the footboard so that it would be easy to climb over in our small room. I also used the same nailhead trim roll. This time, after tapping in the nailhead strips, I quickly colored over the nailheads with my gold leaf pen. (see how bright the bottom few are here?) The key is to not color too perfectly. A messy job looks more real.

I’m in love with how low the head and footboards are – it feels more modern to me. The top of the headboard is about 38″ high. It’s nice because my head sort of rests on the top edge when I’m reading in bed and my back can be supported by the euros and standard shams. It’s really comfortable.

And, hey, do you recognize the pillow fabric? I wish I had a 100 yards of that vintage stripe.

PS In case you are struggling with the corners of a piece like this, I did the reverse approach I shared in this project. Corner strip first, edge pieces last.

Hi friends! The hurricane blew through here, and we’re still safe. Things have been a little crazy as you can imagine. We are housing out-of-town guests as wells as family who were evacuated from the flood zones in Manhattan, so at least we have lots of great company at the brownstone! It’s looking like it will be several more days before the city will be up and running again. I’m hoping we’ll have internet tomorrow though and I’ll be back to posting like regular.
How did you fellow east-coasters fare? It’s been heart-breaking to see so much destruction to our friends homes and apartment buildings. We’re feeling lucky nothing major happened to us.

I realized I had been putting off hanging art in our living room for weeks and weeks because I wanted the gallery wall in there to be perfect. But this month, we’ve have a ton of house guests, so it pushed me to hang some art sooner. It never ceases to amaze me how hanging art makes a home feel personal and alive.

I like how the line of the staircase breaks up the arrangement. Those stairs are not cute to me (more on that later – ugh), so I feel like this is a making lemons out of lemonade sort of thing.
These are my favorites from 20×200 (who is offering up SIX gift certificates today!). I’ve got my eye on a few of these below. They are available in several different sizes, so I’m thinking about an over-sized print for another wall in the living room (which I think would help balance the gallery wall).
This one might be my favorite of the bunch here.
I always liked this book series, but I recently noticed one of the prints hanging in the 5th Ave. J. Crew, and the colors and the texture are unbelievable in person. Definitely on my wish list now.
I’m intrigued by everything Iceland has to offer. HERE
Oh, the colors! HERE
I’m picturing this blown up very large with a simple black or oxblood red frame. HERE.
Oh, Christian Chaize, I just can’t quit you.
A little geometry helps to break up any gallery wall. HERE.
Horses are such lovely, emotional creatures. Don’t you agree they make for amazing art subjects?
I buy fabric on this street almost every week. HERE

I love how pretty these balloons look in the morning light, but also I feel like they probably saw some stuff go down the night before, yeah? HERE.

This prettymap series is clever. Is your city available?

I like how this print is sweet, but the double image keeps it from going into precious territory.

I can’t put my finger on why this one is so arresting for me. HERE.

This artist photographs images, prints them out and manipulates them to create a new image and photographs the result. So cool.

I grew up in a place where fog didn’t really happen, so every time I come across a mist in the morning, I can’t help but be fascinated. It’s so dreamlike. HERE.
The 20×200 site is jam-packed full of lovely, thoughtfully curated art prints. With the holidays right around the corner, I know I’ll be doing a little shopping for friends and family. I love that I have so many price options since most of the 8×10 sized prints start around $20.
If you’d like a chance to win the $200 gift certificate or one of the five $20 gift certificates, please look a little around their site, choose your favorites, and leave a comment with a links on this post.
Contest closes Friday, November 2 at midnight. The winners will be chosen randomly and emailed – so please be sure to sign in or leave your contact info in the comment. Good luck!

My sister’s in town and I was so happy to have her company for a last minute working road trip. We stopped to do some antiquing – and look what I found today!

These vintage wire lounge chairs have so much potential and they were a steal. I’m so glad I switched my balcony plans at the last minute and went with these Blu Dot chairs for around the table. These loungers will sit in a pair on the other end of the balcony. Maybe the faux bois side table between them?

I’m not a fan of the ecru paint color. It’s chipping and rusted over a bit anyway, so I’m thinking I’ll strip these down and see what I’ve got to work with. I’m sort of hoping I can leave the metal unpainted. (maybe just sealed to prevent rusting?).

I’m already brainstorming cushion designs. I have a really fun one in mind. I just need to do a little research on the type of foam/fill I need to buy for outdoor use. Have you ever made your own outdoor cushions?
