When I was leaning over the paint counter, thinking about what colors I’d like to add to my bedroom, I thought an oxblood red would be the perfect balance to the new green lamps and the Knoxville Gray walls. I usually have something of every color in my extra tchotchkes/accessories closet (we all have one, right?), but this time I was coming up a little short in the oxblood red department.

So I swung by the craft store and picked up a plain, clear glass vase for about $3.

The small town that they moved to was the place we had visited every summer and Thanksgiving for most of my childhood. It was where my dad grew up and where my grandparents had always lived. It’s a special little place in the high desert, and the drive up there from the Valley takes you through all sorts of beautiful Arizona scenery.

Find cards you’ll covet at http://www.zazzle.com/holiday+cards.

Years ago, I used to really go all-out with our holiday cards. I’d spend hours and hours on the things, hand-crafting every part. But that was before my life became virtually one giant creative outlet, and in recent years, when I have actually managed to get cards out, they’ve been pretty generic. I had made it a goal to do something manageable AND special this year.

A reader used a Sharpie marker to recreate the classic Brunschwig and Fils snow leopard pattern on her dining room chair seat cushions. The idea came to mind as I was brainstorming an easy way to add some texture and interest to the simple cork memo board I have on my kitchen desk.

Here’s how I made it…

I pulled up a photo of the fabric pattern on my laptop and started tracing out the general pattern.
