The girls upstairs bathroom is finished! I starting writing a MONSTER reveal post with the shiplap tutorial included, but I just couldn’t edit it down to less than, like, 70 photos, so I decided to make this reveal a two-parter! This post is still enormous, but I’m hoping it’s a little more bite-sized! :)
As a reminder, here’s what the bathroom looked like when we moved in (and here’s the post where I talked all about the tile we considered for this space).
And here was my rough plan for the project:
There was only one sink before and all the plumbing fixtures were almond color (not exactly contributing the the bright and fresh look I was after here!). We tore everything out, including the framing and drywall next to the sink so we could put in a 60″ double vanity. Just removing the little wall already made the space look and feel so much bigger!
After we moved the plumbing, repaired the drywall and framed in two shampoo niches, we installed the tile I picked up from Floor & Decor. There are SO many affordable tile and flooring options at Floor & Decor! I used them a TON in my client work when we need to save some money but don’t want to sacrifice on look. The herringbone tile we put on the floors here is only $2.99/ft!
I thought a lot about the white penny tile or the 2″ hex shown here, but I think I always knew in my heart that the herringbone would win in the end. :) It’s just too pretty (and too affordable!) to pass up! It cost less than $120 for all the floor tile in this bathroom!
Their bright white ice subway tile really is a VERY bright shade of white and only costs 21 cents a piece! I wanted to run the tile up to chair rail height around the main perimeter of the bathroom and all the way up to the ceiling in the shower/tub surround.
We used their bullnose trim pieces cut down to 1/2″ wide to act as a cap piece on top of 1/4″ backer board. I like how it has a more squared off, stepped out look than the standard cap pieces that have a much more pronounced, dramatic roll. It feels a little more modern and fresh to me!
You can see here that the mirrors just sit right on top of the face of the tile. Since the step out is only about a 1/4″ after the shiplap was installed, there was no real issue with the mirrors sitting on top of both surfaces.
I went back and forth on grout color quite a bit and was all over the map. Did I want black grout in here? Maybe white is a more classic choice? I ultimately decided to go the lazy route – right down the middle with a warm gray called Cobblestone that I knew would be durable and practical. I also love that the Cobblestone color didn’t feel too trendy but also gave a nice contrast to all the white tile.
They have a MILLION shades of grout to choose from at Floor & Decor and you should always use unsanded grout for wall tile and sanded grout for floor tiles.
I think the grout color I landed on is just right for this space! The warmth in the gray plays nicely with the bluey gray vanity color.
I also love the bright white tile + grout color with the vintage kilim rug we have in front of the tub.
I thought about having just one long shampoo niche that would run the whole length of the tub, but ultimately landed on two smaller niches, which cost a lot less money for framing out. And we used the same bullnose edge pieces to create the edging for the shampoo niches.
I LOVE the tile and how absolutely FRESH the formerly dark and dingy bathroom feels now!

I love the tile, but what made you go with tile AND the wall boards? That’s a lot of lines/texture and it seems a bit jarring to transition from horizontal and vertical lines to just horizontal lines. Is this the new trend?
I did it to cover up our orange peel textured drywall, but I like the textural look! I think it might be a little too much if it weren’t white. :)

In the pictures, the bullnose tile looks like a different color than the subway tiles. Is that just the lighting, or are they different?

I have a random question. When you paint a door black in a room, should all of the interior doors be black as well? Or did you only paint the inside of the bathroom door that color? Just curious because I love the look :)
All of our interior doors are black! I think it’s important for all interior doors to be the same color for consistency.

Thanks Celeste! I like it too. I wanted to cover up the orange peel texture on our drywall and I knew much of the walls would be covered in mirror and art. I like the textural white on white look a lot too, so we just went for it in here! :)

Vanity shopping and struggling with this dilemma bc I don’t know a lot about stone but some of the pre-fab ones look so cheap or junky to me?!
I didn’t paint the vanity! It is definitely a bluey gray. I LOVE the color!! But I especially love it with the new brass hardware! It comes with a brushed nickel pull that fell a little flat to me.

Lovely redo! I noticed you said “we” about framing and tiling and moving plumbing and such. Did you and your family do all the work or did you use contractors?
Thanks for asking, Donna! I use “we” a lot I guess! :) My husband and sister helped a lot on this one. We did most of the demo and the drywall and shiplap and hired out the plumbing, tile and electrical. I haven’t ever attempted DIY plumbing or electrical (and never plan to!). Tile is not too hard, but I’m just really slow at it so we hired a tiler to help save on time!
This is a beautiful bathroom. I think the tile and shiplap look great together!
I am curious though, are you going to add a glass door or curtain to the shower?

The floor and wall tile look like they’re different shades of white. Is that the lighting, or are the tiles different shades of white? If they are different, did you consider using matching whites or did you intentional choose different ones to add another layer of dimension (after the subway tile and the shiplap)?
They are really similar but not exact matches (which I think I prefer to an exact match)! The lighting is REALLY exaggerating the differences though!
I love every square inch of this space! Consider me in the pro-shiplap and tile-camp. :) They look cohesive because they’re both white, all the while adding so much interest to the space. All the bathroom details are on point! Thank you for sharing another inspiring space!!

Honestly, I think the shiplap fights with the tile. The multiple patterns are a little unsettling to me. I do love the all white, and the marble (sigh!) .

It’s called Honed Mountain White. I use it all the time with clients! It’s cheaper than carrara and the veining is BEAUTIFUL! xo

This is probably a very silly question but … will you actually keep that pretty rug in front of the shower? It looks way nicer than a bath mat but I’m curious about the logistics of preventing water damage.

I didn’t paint the vanity here, Amy! It came this color. But a good primer and several coats of paint should do the trick!
Jenny, can you talk about how you mixed metals here? It works so well the way you did it, and as we redo our bathroom, my husband is not digging my desire for brass, nor is it cost efficient to do every single fixture (2 faucets, shower, pulls, lights) in brass. But here you’ve combined — any tips for how to best combine? Thank you!
Hi Hannah! I am planning to do a bigger post about this, but the short answer is I like the plumbing fixture on the vanity and in the bath to match, but the pulls can be different. I NEVER do more than three finishes, and if I do, one of them is matte black. But usually I try to keep it to two. And I also try to not do just one finish! It gets matchy-matchy and one-note very quickly that way. Even if you can just mix it up with the mirror finish, I find that helps to bring in some depth! Hope that helps!

We have a polished nickel one from Kohler as well that we’re mounting on the side of the vanity!
Does it bother you that all of the whites are different? I mean tiles and shiplap, maybe it’s just the photo but the whites are so different it’s throwing off the look a bit, but I always wonder that because all white is so popular these days.

I just purchased the White Herringbone Porcelain Mosaic for my girls shower. It does have a high gloss sheen to it. Have you had any issues with it being slippery? I’m thinking since there is plenty of grout between all the tiles it will be fine? Curious what your experience has been with it? Beautiful bathroom!!
