Kids Cleaning Buckets (and a HUGE Give Away!)

I posted my cleaning schedule last week when I shared my cleaning closet redo and some of you were curious if my girls help with the household work. Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores…

Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores a little more exciting (a stretch, I know!) and to give them more ownership, the girls and I decided they needed their own cleaning kits. So we went to Home Depot together and shopped for some supplies to make the kits. We found a huge display with duct tape in all different colors and we thought that would make a cute (and waterproof!) decoration for simple white buckets.

We also picked up some colorful nylon cording.

The girls and I worked together to wrap the buckets in layers of the duct tape. If you roll the bucket while pulling the tape really taut, there won’t be any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Then we used a hot glue gun to wrap the handles in the nylon cording.

It’s surprising to me how putting in even a little extra effort to make something beautiful gives a household item so much more importance. My girls love these buckets and they’ve been diligently doing their chores lately! Success!

  1. What a great idea to get kids a little motivated to clean. I would love to get my kids on task with something like this and organize their coat/backpack closet we just put in.

  2. I would get started on our kitchen reno! Also clean out and organize a closet I don't even like to keep things in because it is old and dirty! Our house is newish to us and I haven't gotten to everything yet.

  3. Great idea! My main project for this year is to work on revamping all the closets in our house. And I really like the idea of cleaning kits for the kids.

  5. I have been procrastinating about getting the kids their own cleaning supplies and might just do that this week! That love to spray and clean windows(?!), not sure how long it is going to last… We are currently( still) working on our kitchen!

  6. Cute cute, Jenny! I have let a few things get out of hand (basically the whole house) but my craft room has truly turned into a crap room. It screams out dirty attic way more than place to create. I am trying to motivate myself to tackle it and I think a trip to Home Depot for peg board and shelving might be just the thing I need.

  7. This would come just in time for my yearly deep clean before the Oscars! I have a big party (in my tiny NYC apartment) every year and I always take the opportunity to do a genuine deep clean of the entire house. And after I used those great cleaning products, I'd use the HomeDepot gift card to get myself some gorgeous houseplants to keep the air nice and clean :)

  8. I saw those buckets in your original post about the closet redo and thought "I bet those are the white buckets covered with duct tape." that's what I would make ….

  9. I would tackle my shelves that go down the basement stairs. Right now they house junk, random things, old magazines, cookbooks etc. Some of it belongs there and some just gets in the way and jumps off the shelves at you as you go down the stairs- scary!

  10. I'm in desperate need of reorganizing my hall closet! One of only two in the apartment, this closet is a mess!

  12. Awesome timing! We are moving into our new house this weekend and I would love to have a organized place for all of our cleaning supplies. I will probably have to use garage storage or an extra closet

  13. I pay my kids for doing extra chores outside of their regular jobs. It helps to motivate them! I would love to get my laundry room done since it is in the back half of our unfinished and creepy basement

  14. I need to tackle my cleaning/linen closet, and finally finish our guest bedroom! I would love this gift certificate for some DIY projects in the bedroom!!! :)

  15. We went from renting a tiny Brooklyn apartment to a four bedroom house in Oregon! I am so excited to start organizing my new-found closet space and finally have room for everything. This would surely help! :)

  16. Our girl is only 2, so we keep it super simple, but she LOVES to help out. We got her a tiny hand broom & dust pan, and her own container of wipes. She can wipe up spills herself, and clean the coffee table & her play table. The hand broom and dust pan create more of a mess now than any cleaning that's accomplished, but she's learning and feels very important!!

And with $200, I'd love to get materials for a big girl bed we're planning to build for her!! :)

  17. I need to do that for my own cleaning supplies for sure. I now have 2 bathrooms instead of one in the house.. so it would certainly help to tote things back and forth!

  18. Those look great, we might need to do something similar to inspire our boys to more cheerily do some cleaning. We are constantly working on our house but I think next on the list is updating some lighting!

  19. I just moved into a teeny tiny house, so organization is more important than ever! I really need to put some shelving up in my laundry room so I can get my cleaning products stored more efficiently– this will definitely inspire me!

  20. My oldest is 5, which means chores are still novel and fun, and she begs to wash dishes or vacuum regularly. I am milking it while I can :)

  21. This is a fabulous idea!! I think I would use the gift card toward tackling our back entryway redo that I have in mind- striping old wallpaper- re-papering, painting the back door and basement stairs….
