Kids Cleaning Buckets (and a HUGE Give Away!)

I posted my cleaning schedule last week when I shared my cleaning closet redo and some of you were curious if my girls help with the household work. Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores…

Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores a little more exciting (a stretch, I know!) and to give them more ownership, the girls and I decided they needed their own cleaning kits. So we went to Home Depot together and shopped for some supplies to make the kits. We found a huge display with duct tape in all different colors and we thought that would make a cute (and waterproof!) decoration for simple white buckets.

We also picked up some colorful nylon cording.

The girls and I worked together to wrap the buckets in layers of the duct tape. If you roll the bucket while pulling the tape really taut, there won’t be any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Then we used a hot glue gun to wrap the handles in the nylon cording.

It’s surprising to me how putting in even a little extra effort to make something beautiful gives a household item so much more importance. My girls love these buckets and they’ve been diligently doing their chores lately! Success!

  1. We have so much to organize this winter/early spring. The basement is at the top of the list. It needs serious attention. Particularly the laundry situation.

  2. I love that idea. I also imagine letting little ones pick out a scent (I love method and mrs. meyers or febreeze scented cleaners for that) might encourage some little ones to clean more. It works with me ;) I could use help with our laundry room/tool and workroom storage and organization. A lot of help!

  3. My next BIG project is organizing the capped garage. It's become a storage place where nothing can be found! Once I go through all of the "stuff" and throw away, give away, store what I need, it all needs a good scrubbin'. Home Depot can help! (anyone else with courage can come along too.)

  4. This is an awesome giveaway! We just moved into our first house and seriously need to tackle the linen closet and the laundry room – Home Depot would definitely be the place to help us do that! Here's hoping…

  5. Well, with five children and a recently move, my entire house needs attention, but I think I'm going to start with organizing everyone's closets. They're a mess right now!

  6. What a lovely cleaning closet! This is so inspiring…we are about to move in to a 1950's cottage and I am inspired to organize EVERYTHING!

  7. What a lovely project to do with your girls. It really does come down to the little details sometimes. So creative!

I would LOVE to use this to keep our Brooklyn apartment clean and tidy. Not to mention, we are expecting our first baby later this year so I will be repurposing furniture for the nursery and will need paint, primer, brushes etc! Lovely giveaway.

  8. Great post and inspiring contest, Jenny! I would love to win this and will make excellent use of the prize to organize and beautify a big multipurpose closet in our old 1920s bungalow in Los Angeles. It's one of only 2 closets in the whole house so it has to store all our cleaning supplies, luggage, office supplies, seasonal items and more!

  10. I have so many projects that I'd like to embark on and Home Depot is my go-to super store for such things. I really need new shelving in my laundry closet. I have tons of spray paint, oil paint, paint brushes that need a proper home. Not to mention the laundry detergent and other things that currently just sit on top of my washer. I also finally scored a campaign dresser (for $35!!!) and I need to refinish it. The paint on it now is an eye-sore. I have lots of projects in my mind and this can help see them completed. Thanks so much for the continuous inspiration Jenny!! You are my favorite celebrity! Why don't you have your own tv show already??

  11. We just moved into a historic home (1917) and I am ready to figure out window treatments!

  12. Your pretty buckets were a great idea. I pass that duck tape display every time I am in the Home Depot, and despite my efforts, I couldn't think of how I could use them.

My husband and I are working on removing dingy carpet from our stair case and adding new wood steps. Maybe even do an Ikea diy runner :)

  13. I'm working on putting together my laundry room so I'd love some help getting things organized!! Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

  14. This giveaway is awesome. I'm just getting into reupholstering and I have a couch that's going to be my first project. I need a ton of lumber/twine/springs/and all sorts of things that Home Depot has to get this done!

  15. I would love to win this because we are about to move to a smaller apartment in 3 weeks and I need to get myself organized and ready to deep clean our new place.! my daughter is only 15 months so pretty much all we can do in the cleaning department is pick up blocks. But one day!

  16. i make my girls cute little lists of their chores. Add cute descriptions of the chore and a little check box that they can check off when that chore is done.

  17. Could really use some new supplies to get our house ready to sell! Love the ideas for how to get kids on board with cleaning – will keep in mind for when our little guy gets older :)

  18. I would like to get new shelves for the garage and tiles/paint for the bathrooms.

  19. I love the closet renovations and this cute idea to customize those buckets. I could really use the new supplies to help us clean out our current space before we move to our new home across the country.

  20. Organized spaces feed my soul, and I hate cleaning, so the moment of beauty before the chore makes it "all good." Thanks so much for the giveaway!
