Kids Cleaning Buckets (and a HUGE Give Away!)

I posted my cleaning schedule last week when I shared my cleaning closet redo and some of you were curious if my girls help with the household work. Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores…

Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores a little more exciting (a stretch, I know!) and to give them more ownership, the girls and I decided they needed their own cleaning kits. So we went to Home Depot together and shopped for some supplies to make the kits. We found a huge display with duct tape in all different colors and we thought that would make a cute (and waterproof!) decoration for simple white buckets.

We also picked up some colorful nylon cording.

The girls and I worked together to wrap the buckets in layers of the duct tape. If you roll the bucket while pulling the tape really taut, there won’t be any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Then we used a hot glue gun to wrap the handles in the nylon cording.

It’s surprising to me how putting in even a little extra effort to make something beautiful gives a household item so much more importance. My girls love these buckets and they’ve been diligently doing their chores lately! Success!

  1. We're renovating our downstairs which includes the laundry room. I'd like to include a cleaning closet similar to yours in this space. Hopefully it will make cleaning and laundry more enjoyable! Love the bucket idea by the way – you are so good at making the ordinary extra special :).

  2. My basement needs a good scrubbing, haven't tackled it since moving in a few months ago. It's scary down there! :)

  3. My kitchen needs some love – between the pantry, the floors, the bare walls and the table needing some new DIY life – everything could use some love!

  4. My project would be to tackle my laundry room – I'd like to organize my cabinets with drawers and hangers to make our weekly routine of getting out the door easier!

  6. I would love to get my laundry/ furnace/ storage room more organised. Its in the middle of my house so it doesn't have a window. It looks like a dungeon and needs a total overhaul. I hate being in there and shuffeling past the furnace and dusty boxes with my clean laundry. Its ironic that the place I keep my cleaning supplies and clean our clothes is the dirtiest place in the house!

  7. My son is 3 and is currently obsessed with vacuums. So some of his chores are to vacuum his room and the living room, and he also vacuums the stairs using our smaller handheld vacuum. He has blast doing it and he does such a good job. And as a bonus, he's entertained for a little bit and the carpet is clean!

  8. What a great idea to make cleaning a little more enjoyable. I might have to try that for myself.

I'm busy working on optimizing the storage in our hall closet, the current set up leads to coats tossed on the stroller, and shoes falling off the shoe rack.

  10. We just added a [surprise] 3rd babe (our only boy) to our family. OK, he's 9months – it goes soooo quickly!

So, we moved the girls into the same room and are working on that transition of getting little brother into his own room.

I would work on adding creative storage into the girls' now shared space!

  11. Love it! I'm living in a rental, but would love to organize our huge storage closet and make my cleaning arsenal a bit more useful.

  12. What a fun project! Anything that makes cleaning a bit more exciting is A-okay in my book! :)

I need to tackle my laundry room desperately, and winning this giveaway would give me just the push I need to get started! :)

  13. Cute! I'd make a very similar bucket for outdoor chores. Would look so cute when I get tired and leave it hanging around the yard!

  14. Such a great idea! I think this will be perfect for getting my 3 yr old excited to help around the house. Love it!

  15. I am trying to DIY my own picture frames – a gift card would be great inspiration for a project born out of frustration!

Thank you Jenny! Love the blog!

  16. I love the sentiment that taking the time to make something that was merely functional, al little more beautiful, elevates the object and the way you think about it.

  17. My favorite tip for getting kids to help with the cleaning is to set a timer (works for me, too!). Twenty minutes or so on the timer and we're off and running. Perfect training for preparing for last-minute company.

  18. New paint!! Kitchen, bathroom, stairwell, pretty much everywhere. Also need to organize cleaning closets and laundry.

  19. We've been terrible at keeping our boys on a cleaning / household responsibility routine. The buckets are a great idea and would be a good place for us to re-start!

  20. You are so creative! I would love to get my laundry room reorganized — it's where I store all of my cleaning/paper products and making it half as beautiful as your closet would definitely provide some much needed motivation!

  21. New paint!! Kitchen, bathroom, stairwell, pretty much everywhere. Also need to get cleaning closet under control. Love those buckets so much!

  22. How adorable! When is a gift card to HD not handy? But especially now while we are converting an office into a playroom and a guest bedroom into a nursery!

  23. I'm taking my oldest daughter's bedroom (she moved to California for college), and converting it into an office for our stationery business. Major overhaul, including cleaning and organizing! Thanks for the motivation!

  24. I would conquer reorganizing my master bedroom closet. As a military family we need to move quick and set up even quicker. My master bedroom closet is a small walk-in space shared with my husband and my daughter. I am in need of a redo so that i don't have a panic attack when i walk into what should be a place of serenity.

  25. We just built a wall (with pocket door) to make a utility room inside our side room/future play room. We have got organize that space and put our household items (tools, paint, stuff you'd typically put in a basement) in there.

  26. I would use this to kickstart cleaning our condo as soon as the kitchen construction is complete. There is a LOT of dust to get up!

  27. My family of 6 has 2 big moves in the next 6 months. 1st to a rental and then to our own home. I really want to work on painting my son and daughters chest of drawers and changing out the handles so my DIY project can move with us.
