Kids Cleaning Buckets (and a HUGE Give Away!)

I posted my cleaning schedule last week when I shared my cleaning closet redo and some of you were curious if my girls help with the household work. Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores…

Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores a little more exciting (a stretch, I know!) and to give them more ownership, the girls and I decided they needed their own cleaning kits. So we went to Home Depot together and shopped for some supplies to make the kits. We found a huge display with duct tape in all different colors and we thought that would make a cute (and waterproof!) decoration for simple white buckets.

We also picked up some colorful nylon cording.

The girls and I worked together to wrap the buckets in layers of the duct tape. If you roll the bucket while pulling the tape really taut, there won’t be any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Then we used a hot glue gun to wrap the handles in the nylon cording.

It’s surprising to me how putting in even a little extra effort to make something beautiful gives a household item so much more importance. My girls love these buckets and they’ve been diligently doing their chores lately! Success!

  1. In our house we put on loud music and have some family cleaning time. It also helps if I don't critique my 3 year olds work and just praise him for helping at this point!

I have plans now to make over our cleaning/ junk closet now. I want to invest in quality wood cleaning tools and display them!

  2. Those buckets are so cute! Our house has slowly been plotting a yard sale so it would be awesome to have some gear to get ready for it and clean up all our space afterwards!

  3. Oh goodness, what wouldn't I do? Probably shelving for our bathroom since we have no space for our towels/toiletries! Those buckets are so adorable!

  4. Those buckets are so cute! Keeping this in mind for when our boy is older. :)

I'd use the gift card to organize our storage closet downstairs, which we're repurposing into a storage closet/man nook!

  5. I need to tackle our closets — all of them. And the basement could use some TLC, too. So much to do, so little time (as always!).

  6. I have a hall closet that stores coats, Christmas decorations, my tool box and associate tools/notions. It could really use an upgrade from random sized card board boxes and plastic coat hangars!

  7. I really need to organise our hall cupboard. For some reason, it has 10" deep shelves in a 2.5' deep cupboard, so we regularly have avalanches of linens, towels, yoga mats and cleaning supplies.

  8. I need to clean my windows on the outside. And maybe I need to make ME a bucket to be more motivated.

  9. We have an older house that doesn't have many closets – I just wish I could find a place for my vacuum cleaner to live!

  10. Thanks for the giveaway! I would use it to build the built-in seating in my kitchen! Can't wait for that project to start!

  11. My little condo could use a lot of organizing (ahem, small space, lots of stuff)… Starting with my workhorse of a linen/cleaning/storage closet would be amazing! Xo

  12. Great idea! I live in a small apartment and I'm constantly organizing and editing my closets. I am always looking for things to help with that!

  13. The smallest project I am in the process of completing is to spruce up my laundry closet. After seeing the improvements you made on your laundry room and cleaning closet I am inspired to make my laundry closet a place I no longer dread.

  14. We have an 8-month-old baby boy, who is just learning to crawl. I'd use to the gift certificate to clean up and re-organize (and baby proof!) our living room so that it's a more baby-friend play space.

  15. The buckets are so cute! Right now, I want to overhaul our 2nd bedroom/office and organize EVERYTHING. It's a disaster right now.

  16. I'm so inspired by your closet makeover! I would def clean more often if I had bucket that lovely! On my to-do list are: making a cleaning bucket, organizing my pantry/storage, the TINY closet space my husband and I share to make the space more functional

  17. I need to organize my craft and fabric supplies. I love how pretty you made your cleaning closet, I think it would be really fun to use paint and fabric with my craft and fabric supplies. thanks for the idea!

  18. We just bought our first home so we would stock our unfinished basement with cleaning goodies!

  19. We are on the hunt for a new house now–so judging from what I've seen, we could easily spend the $200 on paint. I think I need to make the investment on a cleaning kit for myself, though, and maybe one for each of my boys for good measure ;)

  20. We have a room off of our patio that we are desperate to organize/make useful. We're going to do a deep clean, paint, tile, and put up some shelves.

  21. Ha! My husband and I are continually trying to teach our kids how to clean our home. Even though they have the same chores every week, we find ourselves reteaching them every few months how to properly clean a tub, toilet, etc. I love the idea of cleaning buckets with all the supplies they need right at hand. Perhaps that might help give them more ownership in their work. A mom can hope at least!

  22. I've been wanting to re-decorate/re-organize our laundry room. I would use the winnings to do the much needed update.

    Thank you!

  23. Wow! We are ip just getting ready to move into a new apartment and this would be amazing to help get it all clean before moving in! And that gift card could help update the yellow kitchen. A little paint maybe?

  27. These buckets are adorable and you actually made a cleaning closet look GOOD!

The project that I have in mind is actually organizing MY cleaning supplies! I have a small "broom cabinet" in the kitchen that could use some help (those mop holders would be great, as well as something fun to line the cabinet). My undersink area for cleaning supplies is SO jumbled – I would like to install some organizers and some lining and make it look as pretty as yours! :)

  28. I would use it to organize the closet in my guest bedroom, right now everything that I don't know what to do with is thrown in there.
