Kids Cleaning Buckets (and a HUGE Give Away!)

I posted my cleaning schedule last week when I shared my cleaning closet redo and some of you were curious if my girls help with the household work. Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores…

Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores a little more exciting (a stretch, I know!) and to give them more ownership, the girls and I decided they needed their own cleaning kits. So we went to Home Depot together and shopped for some supplies to make the kits. We found a huge display with duct tape in all different colors and we thought that would make a cute (and waterproof!) decoration for simple white buckets.

We also picked up some colorful nylon cording.

The girls and I worked together to wrap the buckets in layers of the duct tape. If you roll the bucket while pulling the tape really taut, there won’t be any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Then we used a hot glue gun to wrap the handles in the nylon cording.

It’s surprising to me how putting in even a little extra effort to make something beautiful gives a household item so much more importance. My girls love these buckets and they’ve been diligently doing their chores lately! Success!

  1. we are in the midst of a kitchen ceiling rehab… i would love a little extra cash from the depot to help out with paint and lighting!

  2. We are on a mission to re-organize our entry and closet space- it's an NYC rental so we gotta make every inch count!

  3. I'm the fundraiser for a public library system, and our three major fundraising projects are likened to filling three "buckets." I'm going to use your idea to decorate three buckets to use as visual tools for the next meeting. Thanks so much!

  4. My new home did not come with a shower door and I NEED a shower door, OH so bad and happened to be at Home Depot yesterday and saw a shower door I loved, and that they do custom installation so the gift card would help me out SO much!!

  5. OMG, this is perfect! Love the bucket idea!

I just stripped (most of) the wallpaper in my boys' bathroom, so I'm going to be patching holes and evening out the walls (boo) and then painting (YAY!) very soon.

  6. we have a utility room that is about to be painted and tiled. once that's done, that sucker's going to need organized. it's a mess!

  7. My kids have a magnetic chore chart. I wouldn't say it's super fun, but it does help us stay on track with daily and weekly cleaning!

  8. How fun! We're finishing the kitchen and then have a bathroom redo on the list – there's lots to clean up there!

  9. I'd use the gift card to do some major organization in my basement. I have a pegboard wall, which holds cleaning supplies and tools, that is just crying for attention and a pretty update/

  10. We have a sonos system in our house and we have an upbeat cleaning playlist. Everyone put some of their favorites on it. We hit random play and dance through the chores.

  11. I need to organize my entire house. We just moved from a 2 bedroom home to a four bedroom home. Very overwhelming.

  12. We recently moved into a new (old) house and I've been desperate to get the laundry room organized! A fresh coat of paint, new hardware, and some drawer and shelf organizers would go a long way to making it more functional!

  13. I would use it to freshen up my closet with new shelving and paint! It's only thirteen years overdue!

  14. What a perfect, timely giveaway! We just moved into a new-to-us house three months ago, and would love to tear out the old carpet (that's giving me lots of bad allergy symptoms) for a new, clean floor from Home Depot! Three cheers for sprucing up a home AND health in 2014!

  15. I have a super duper scary closet under the stairs that could really use some de-zombiefication & organizing!

  16. I have a few things on my list, namely reorganizing my kitchen and painting my cabinets. With a soon-to-be-mobile baby, I need to get everything dangerous out of the lower cabinets, and organizing/painting will make the overall aesthetic nicer.

  17. With 2 roommates, things can get messy fast! We have a spare closet that I would love to transform like you did! Such a fab and fun idea!

  18. I've been living alone a few years but now I'm getting a roommate. I need to purge my guest room and make it a blank slate ASAP!

  19. We are about to move into our (first) new house and so there will be lots and lots of serious cleaning in the weeks to come!

  20. This is a great idea! My oldest has chores written on clothes pins that he has to move from a do-side to a done-side on a door hanger. The visual of that really seems to help. I think having a bucket like this would take it to the next level. So cute!

  21. My fiance and I are moving to a new [old] house on Wednesday—some Home Depot money would definitely be put to good use as we fix it up!

  22. When I was a kid my parents would blast music while we all cleaned the house on Saturday morning. If it was nice out all the windows were open. It just put me in a great mood to get things done with everyone!

  23. Just finished organizing the pantry. My next projects are organizing the attic and the garage.

  24. There is no end to the ideas i have for what I would use that gift card on! To keep my kids excited about doing chores we have a magnet chart. They get really excited to move things from one side of the chart to the other :)

  25. Both kids graduate college this spring. Knowing what their "first apartment budgets" will be….I fully expect filthy, you get what you pay for digs……this will get them started on the diy/no mom around to do it for you oath :) ssdmmf@yahoo.com
