Kids Cleaning Buckets (and a HUGE Give Away!)

I posted my cleaning schedule last week when I shared my cleaning closet redo and some of you were curious if my girls help with the household work. Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores…

Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores a little more exciting (a stretch, I know!) and to give them more ownership, the girls and I decided they needed their own cleaning kits. So we went to Home Depot together and shopped for some supplies to make the kits. We found a huge display with duct tape in all different colors and we thought that would make a cute (and waterproof!) decoration for simple white buckets.

We also picked up some colorful nylon cording.

The girls and I worked together to wrap the buckets in layers of the duct tape. If you roll the bucket while pulling the tape really taut, there won’t be any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Then we used a hot glue gun to wrap the handles in the nylon cording.

It’s surprising to me how putting in even a little extra effort to make something beautiful gives a household item so much more importance. My girls love these buckets and they’ve been diligently doing their chores lately! Success!

  1. I find tasks for my son that match his ability. He just started washing the plastic containers and other things we don't put in the dishwasher. Success!

  3. I'm moving this summer and really need to clean out my clothes beforehand… dresser AND closet. It's just so hard to do alone. You need someone to tell you straight up what fits and what doesn't!

  4. Awesome buckets! I am definitely excited to create my own beautifully organized cleaning space! Thanks for the fun ideas to get me started!

  5. I give my kids rags for 'skates' along with a squirt bottle of water or some kid-friendly cleaning spray. They spray the floor, then 'skate' on it to clean the floor!

  6. I'm building a folding screen as wall art to de-emphasize a big flatscreen, and just finished reorganizing my storage unit and Christmas decorations. (The better to fit the clearance buys from this year, don't you know?)

  7. This post couldn't have come at a more perfect time because I've been desperate to clean my house but have been lacking the motivation to actually get it done! Thank you for inspiring me and for this awesome giveaway, too!

  8. This is wonderful! We are starting a project that includes the entryway/closet area where I'd like to put up some hooks and cabinets of sorts to make it appear to be a mudroom though it's not a large area. We need a little more organizing and I think this would work for us.

  9. We desperately need to tackle our entry way…I want to build a custom shelving unit that has storage spots for baskets (hats/mittens), hooks for hanging coats, and space on top for displaying artwork. Thanks for inspiration!

  10. We have two closets screaming for some organization. And a lackluster guest room waiting for a feel final touches. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  11. Love those buckets, so creative! I badly need to clean my laundry room! There is a funky smell coming from there that I have to find, along with a lot of scrubbing and organizing…

  12. Oh, so many things I could use that for, including making cleaning buckets for my kids! We do 5-minute cleanups in our house, where we set the timer and everyone races around clearing up clutter and putting things away. It's crazy how much you can get done in 5 minutes!

  13. Hi – what a cute idea for kids! Thanks for the opportunity – I have lots of upcoming projects for home this spring, but really the big one is redoing my side entry. It really needs some fixing and updating.

  14. We are renovating our daughters bathroom. I would use the giveaway to fluff the linen closet in there since I am so inspired by your cleaning closet! Swoon!

  15. We are planning to remodel our master bath which has NO storage whatsoever thanks to a monstrous HOT TUB, so am sure this would come in useful.

  16. GREAT IDEA! My grandaughter is only 16 months old and she loooooves to clean. She may not be able to talk yet, but she understands everything I'm saying. We have more pictures of her 'cleaning' and 'organizing' than playing:)

  17. We're still working on decorating our apartment after over a year of living in it! This month we're finally re-painting the dining room.

It is the classic "Navajo White" paint that every apartment manager puts on the walls; it's really a dull yellow and looks awful in low light. We're going to change it to a crisp white, and then finally hang that huge atlas print I got for Christmas!

Hoping it will give us the motivation to re-paint the living room, too!

  18. We're in the midst of turning our new to us house into our home. So many projects this could be used for!

  19. I would love to fix up my closet under the basement stairs pretty similar to this one. Never thought of a cleaning closet so I think I would spend that money towards supplies to make it look like that!!! dmeerzam@yahoo.com
