Kids Cleaning Buckets (and a HUGE Give Away!)

I posted my cleaning schedule last week when I shared my cleaning closet redo and some of you were curious if my girls help with the household work. Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores…

Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores a little more exciting (a stretch, I know!) and to give them more ownership, the girls and I decided they needed their own cleaning kits. So we went to Home Depot together and shopped for some supplies to make the kits. We found a huge display with duct tape in all different colors and we thought that would make a cute (and waterproof!) decoration for simple white buckets.

We also picked up some colorful nylon cording.

The girls and I worked together to wrap the buckets in layers of the duct tape. If you roll the bucket while pulling the tape really taut, there won’t be any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Then we used a hot glue gun to wrap the handles in the nylon cording.

It’s surprising to me how putting in even a little extra effort to make something beautiful gives a household item so much more importance. My girls love these buckets and they’ve been diligently doing their chores lately! Success!

  1. Oh I love those buckets! So cute! I would love to organize Carters toys! I have been trying to do a little at a time, but I love those buckets! I have found that it really helps the little ones to want to help clean up, if everything has a place…so I really want to work on the toy room!

  2. We have been working on lots of little projects in our home. We bought our first house a year ago and there is tons to do! Plus baby #3 is on her way… My boys help out a lot but I think they would love those cleaning buckets!

  3. What a cute idea!! I had the room to do such a neat cleaning room when my kids were young but I did not have the wonderful DIY ideas I am seeing now. I'm afraid I remember the beginnings of the internet and there weren't the blogs there are now. Anyway I wish you and your girls continued success in your chore future :)

  4. Our laundry room needs organized and more storage..

  5. We are starting a major renovation of two bathrooms and a bedroom. Planning on buying vanities and some tile at Home Depot so this would help a lot!

  6. I need to organize my kichen cabinets. They are a mess! My daughter is 10 and she volunteers to clean everything that involves dish liquid and water including washing pots and pans. I am not sure how long this will last!

  7. Love this! My girls would love their own supplies. Could definitely stock up and tackle our linen closet.

  9. I would use it to clean and organize our basement, which has been our catch -all location since moving in several months ago.

  10. My organizing/cleaning project is my house! We've just downsized from. 1600+ sq ft house with a huge garage to a 950 sq ft house with no garage. So this little "clutter bug" needs to organize in a big way!

  11. My daughter turns four this week and I don't let her help with things as much as I should, because let's face it, it's not always very helpful! But I should start the habits now while she is eager to pitch in, and this has inspired me. Laura Lgw394 at aol dot com

  12. My teenage son has weekly cleaning chores but often he "forgets" to do them. Colorful buckets wouldn't motivate him … maybe hiding dollar bills in places he needs to clean? Ha ha.

If I won the HD gift card, I would use it in our former guest room, which I just took over as a sewing room for my new pillow-making business. I can't wait to have a space that my guys don't have to approve of!

  13. My girls have a list of chores they are responsible for everyday. I think they'd love this bucket idea. Making something pretty makes it so much more pleasant to do dirty jobs.

  15. I love this! With three little ones, two house bunnies and a dog, the cleaning never stops around here haha. What a great idea to get kids involved in cleaning!

  16. I need to play musical rooms with my sons' rooms and the guest room, moving the older boy into the (larger) guest room, the younger one into the older one's room, and the rarely-used guest room into the smallest of the three. Because there are two little boys involved, this will involve copious amounts of cleaning.

  17. Great idea! I would tackle some DIY shelving and organizational gear for all of our cleaning equipment (much like your cleaning closet!). :)

  18. My laundry room needs some serious organization, so I would start there. Those buckets are so fun and user friendly!
