Kids Cleaning Buckets (and a HUGE Give Away!)

I posted my cleaning schedule last week when I shared my cleaning closet redo and some of you were curious if my girls help with the household work. Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores…

Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores a little more exciting (a stretch, I know!) and to give them more ownership, the girls and I decided they needed their own cleaning kits. So we went to Home Depot together and shopped for some supplies to make the kits. We found a huge display with duct tape in all different colors and we thought that would make a cute (and waterproof!) decoration for simple white buckets.

We also picked up some colorful nylon cording.

The girls and I worked together to wrap the buckets in layers of the duct tape. If you roll the bucket while pulling the tape really taut, there won’t be any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Then we used a hot glue gun to wrap the handles in the nylon cording.

It’s surprising to me how putting in even a little extra effort to make something beautiful gives a household item so much more importance. My girls love these buckets and they’ve been diligently doing their chores lately! Success!

  1. This is a great idea, Jenny! Thanks much! I would organize the entry closets in our new home into a more individualized place where we call drop off coats, backpacks, winter gear, etc.

  2. So many things need done around here. I think I'd start cleaning in my basement–my sewing room really needs some scrubbing.

  3. I don't have any children but I think my housekeeper would appreciate that bucket! I might just have to make her one for a surprise! I recently rented a sander at Home Depot and sanded, stained and poly'd our wood floors! Next project…kitchen counters and a new backsplash!

  4. I'd use it to clean our screened porch. After a rainy fall and winter it's ready for a good scrubbing.

  5. What a great giveaway! I'm in the midst of a backyard reno and that gift card would be a huge gift to add in a few more plants and pavers.

  6. My daughter turned 6 this weekend and now that she is a "big" girl she wants to be given some chores! This would be a perfect way to get her started with regular chores and be excited about it!

  7. We moved into a fixer-upper a few months ago and still have so many projects we want to do! I think next on our list is installing planks in the master bedroom to cover the popcorn ceiling, and also building some storage/shelving for the master closet.
I'm trying to get my 2 year old excited about cleaning…..so far no luck. He gets $1/week for feeding the dog and the fish every day, going to try to add some cleaning chores in there soon!

  8. Pretty things always make me more likely to clean and enjoy it too! Maybe setting up some new cleaning areas will help me, especially as I enter the nesting stage of pregnancy!

  9. I need to have items in handier spots so people other than me can find them and clean up. My babysitter called me the other day to say one of the kids had thrown up but she couldn't find the bucket or the cleaners. The bucket was outside behind the house, where else? Of course it was dark and a skunk was prowling around so she ended up using toilet paper and laundry soap to clean the floor! (She didn't know about vinegar and baking soda…)

  10. We are currently diy-ing both of our bathrooms -adding some pretty and lots of storage and organization! Love all the great tips and ideas!

  11. I have been struggling to get my girls excited about chores lately. Love your idea to give them their own supplies! As for the giveaway, I'd love to tackle my laundry room and make it more functional. Fingers crossed!

  13. We are in the midst of revamping bedrooms for our 4 girls. We have been visiting Home Depot multiple times a week working on the project.

  14. I'm already started on a bathroom remodel, down to studs and all! I would love to get some really pretty tile from Home Depot to make my shower pop. Plus the cleaning products would help keep the finished space looking like new :)

  15. I am in the middle of a total overhaul of all my black-hole-closets in the house. We are getting ready to put our house on the market, so I need to stay organized to stay on top of the cleaning.

  16. To get my kids excited about cleaning when they were younger, i would buy them kid-sized versions of grown up tools, like little brooms and mops. They weren't toy cleaning tools, just mini-versions of the real thing. Now that they are a little older, they still love to help and are excited to use the big stuff..

  17. I could definitely use that! :) I would love to be able to replace some of my husbands power tools he had stolen from work two weeks ago! He would be so excited!
