Kids Cleaning Buckets (and a HUGE Give Away!)

I posted my cleaning schedule last week when I shared my cleaning closet redo and some of you were curious if my girls help with the household work. Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores…

Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores a little more exciting (a stretch, I know!) and to give them more ownership, the girls and I decided they needed their own cleaning kits. So we went to Home Depot together and shopped for some supplies to make the kits. We found a huge display with duct tape in all different colors and we thought that would make a cute (and waterproof!) decoration for simple white buckets.

We also picked up some colorful nylon cording.

The girls and I worked together to wrap the buckets in layers of the duct tape. If you roll the bucket while pulling the tape really taut, there won’t be any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Then we used a hot glue gun to wrap the handles in the nylon cording.

It’s surprising to me how putting in even a little extra effort to make something beautiful gives a household item so much more importance. My girls love these buckets and they’ve been diligently doing their chores lately! Success!

  1. Such a great idea, I would have loved that as a child. I don't have kids yet but I think making their own cleaning kits would be top of my list.

When I was little my mum used to play our favourite music on Saturday mornings and we would happily do our chores as it meant the sooner we were done the quicker we could go outside to play:)

  2. Awesome giveaway! I would use it to organize our laundry room – add some shelving, paint, get organized! I think I would also definitely make some fun duct tape buckets! So cute!

  3. I love the buckets! I'd like to tackle my Entry Coat Closet at some point. It just doesn't make sense now and I need it to make sense and work better!

Thanks for the giveaway and I LOVE your blog ;)

  4. Oh my! I would LOVE to revamp my tiny laundry "closet" and under our kitchen sink-both home to all our cleaning supplies, and both dated, dirty, and in need of something fresh and colorful!

  5. darling buckets…maybe i should do that to my own cleaning bucket to motivate myself. i would use the gift card for paint for my basement!

  6. I just love the idea of the kids making their own cleaning buckets! Great way to get them involved!
I need to clean up my basement laundry area – get rid of some crickets making a home down there – you know, make it "less scary" so I could definitely use some supplies!

  7. Well, we just moved into a new home yesterday, so we pretty much need new EVERYTHING. With $200, though, I might get new kitchen hardware (because three knobs are inexplicably missing) a gallon of paint, and a new light fixture.

  8. Love this idea! How fun. Shoot, those buckets might even keep ME motivated. :-)

I'd love a giftcard as I'm sprucing up our home this year with lots of ideas. First up, some paint for the scratches on our yellow walls in the kitchen – dining room chairs can do some damage! :-) And then some hooks for hanging a chandelier and my new shower caddy.

    Thanks for the chance!!

  9. Those buckets are fantastic! My next project involves a closet that is shameful! It needs sooo much organizing (think Monica on Friends, haha).

  10. What a great idea to get the kids more involved! I have endless projects going on at the moment – a HD gift card would not go to waste here! :)

  11. I would give the gift certificate to my son who is making storage benches for an Eagle Scout project. (I also need some paint primer for plastic to paint a small flower pot. I'll be reading back through your blog to find your favorite, because I know there's a recommendation in there, and I LOVE that you do that!)

  12. Neat idea with the duct tape. I was given some colorful duct tape a while ago, but had no idea what to do with it. Now I've got some ideas to work on.

My next project is dealing with our back hall/mudroom. There's got to be a way to organize coats, boots, mops, brooms, and extra cat food and liter so it doesn't look like a compete mess all the time.

  13. I love the bucket idea! I would get the supplies to make a bucket for my toddler son, and some organization supplies for my tiny cabinet where I store cleaning supplies.

  14. Oh, I'm dreaming of a garden already (though it's snowing here AGAIN today). Would love to buy some seeds and seedlings and pots for the porch!

  15. Thanks for the giveaway! You have inspired me to tackle my unattractive closets :)

I would use the giftcards towards Spring Cleaning supplies and our vegetable garden!

  16. My hall coat closet needs a coat of paint and some serious organization with bins and shelves. Love the buckets Jenny, I may have to jazz up my mop bucket with some collegiate duck tape I have lying around! :)

  17. Paint and a couple of Purdy paint brushes would be first on my list. Oh, and a couple of drop cloths and I saw a rug there that I'm pining for and… and… and… No doubt about it, I could put that gc to good use should I be lucky enough to win. Thanks so much for the giveaway and the opportunity to win!

  18. I'm considering making that kit for myself, haha!

I just moved into a new apartment and the spare bedroom is a horrifying mess. I would definitely tackle that.

  20. Ooh, where to start… Your cleaning closet inspired me to tackle some of our own closets. Our garage could also use some organization – so many options! Love, love, love the buckets!
