Last night was scary and weird. I have this problem where food gets stuck in my throat. Once a couple years ago an Ibuprofen liquid gel pill got stuck and it was very scary and painful. It happened again late last night and it looks like the pill did some serious damage to the lining of my throat. I’m headed into a procedure that will help us know more. The whole thing feels silly and it’s just about the worst timing. Deadlines galore and new, exciting projects that need research (I’m excited to share a big one with you in two weeks), but all of that will have to wait while I focus on getting healthy for the next few days. Thanks for your understanding while I take a little break here, too.

When I come back I’ll be sharing some cool things we’ve done in our bedroom and (hopefully) some good progress on the chevron floors. Speaking of, I’ve waffled a lot this week with the angle choice – 22.5, 30 or 45 degree cuts.

I like both the 45 and the 30 best for the space (the room is no quite wide enough for the 22.5 long slope). The two longest cuts in both the 45 and the 30 here in the photo below are what the finished cuts would actually look like (24″ long planks from miter cut to miter cut). You can see that the 45 degree angle makes for a much more narrow row than the 30 degree cut plank even though they are both 24″ long. Trigonometry at work!!

What’s your preference?

And, of course, some of my inspiration images to take you on through the rest of the week. Have a good one friends. Wish me luck with this dumb throat thing. xo

  1. Holy smokes; take care of yourself! I think I like the steeper angle, but I think either way is going to be so beautiful you could cry.

  2. Oh, Jenny…so sorry to hear about your throat! Please take care and I am sending healing thoughts your way. I like either of the 2 angles on your flooring and know it will be fabulous whichever you decide! All the best.

  3. This happened to me a few years ago and was quite scary! It burned an ulcer on the lining of my esophagus and was incredibly painful to eat or drinking anything. The only hope I can offer is that is healed faster than the doctors expected (there was a lot of prayer involved as well). Wishing you healing and a quick recovery!

  4. I definitely likel the wider for your space..it feels more spacious and as if it would blend into the background instead of calling ALL the attention to itself. It's bit more classic. I love the photo of the marble fireplace and the living room two pics below it. LOVE!!!
Take care of yourself. I guess no talking for a while. It seems like you get really sick whenever you're super busy; must be your body telling you something!

  6. I like the 45. The inspiration floors with the (tightest?), (sharpest?), (most narrow?) angles are the most stunning. Sorry about my lack of proper angle terminology.

  7. Oh my goodness, wishing you all the best!
I would go for the 30: it looks good and being slightly wider should hopefully mean that you'll be done quicker!

  8. Hi Jenny,

This has happened to me twice. Both times at night taking the gel cap sticky pills. So now I always drink a lot of water to lubricate my throat before taking those kind of pills. Especially at night when your body is laying down and gravity is working against you. It is so uncomfortable when one gets stuck. And all you can do is wait until it finally dissolves. Definitely NOT fun. Take all the time you need Jenny. And BTW your house and blog are outstanding. k

  9. I know exactly how you feel – sounds like what I've gone through with my esophagus. I've had a couple procedures and three visits to the emergency room over the course of seven years due to food getting stuck in my throat. I'm finally okay, but I really have to watch my bite sizes and how quickly I eat. Bread and meat is the hardest. I also found that drinking Bragg apple cider vinegar before meals (I drink a concoction of water, ACV, raw honey and cinnamon) has helped tremendously. Aloe juice works, too, but it tastes horrible. Anyway, good luck, I hope your situation improves. Nothing worse than the feeling of something lodged in your throat!

  10. I'm sorry about the throat thingy. Good luck and heal well!

For the angle, my first impulse was the 30 because the 45 would put a lot of motion in the floor. However, you see the context of the floor (the room, the doorways, etc.) so you are the better judge for having that kind of motion in the room.

What will the floor be moving "towards?" Windows? A wall? If it is all moving towards a gorgeous feature then that could be pretty darn cool.

Either way, it is going to be a pretty cool effect and I can't wait to see it!

  11. Oh what a pain health can be sometimes! :) The best to you and a speedy recovery. You do such good work here and in your home your deserve a bit of time away.

And I vote for the 30. Most of the inspiration images that I am drawn to seem to have a slightly gentler/off angle. The sharp angle of the 45 is dramatic and cool but there is something more irregular or different about and angle that isn't exactly perfectly in between. My two cents for whats its worth… but you are the MASTER and your judgement is the shiz.

  13. My sister had the same problem with her throat. It was very constricted and sounds similar to what you described. She learned it was allergies, changed her diet, and is much better. Good luck and hope you get better soon!

  14. The 45 draws your eye more towards the floor especially if the wood is not uniform in color. The 30 is more subtle. Since your wood looks very uniform in color I think you can go for the 45, making a statement without it dominating the room.
    Get well soon.

  15. My daughter had a similar throat issue. They just expanded her esophagus with an outpatient procedure! problem solved. Good luck.

I prefer the wider spread . i think the 30 degree angle. It feels more open.

  16. So scary. My Dad had the same problem. I was with him when it happened once and I've never been more frightened. He had a simple procedure to widen the esophagus (with a balloon?) and he is much better. Hope you heal quickly!

I like the wider angle. It feels more classic, less chevrony.

  17. I dealt with the same thing for years! Long story short, turns out I have a lot of food allergies/intolerances. (I had no idea) I just had to drink a steroid and limit the intake of my allergens and I am choke free. (: It was such a relief to figure it out, so I hope yours gets figured out too. Because it IS really scary and painful.

As for your floor I like the steeper angle (:

  18. i'm so sorry about your throat, and i hope everything goes well and you are healed quickly. as for the floors, i like the 45 degree angle best.

  19. So sad for you. How painful! Hope you can get some rest and have a quick recovery. I think I prefer the 30 degree angle, but I'm sure whichever you decide on will be beautiful. XO

  20. So sorry about your throat problem. It sounds very similar to what my husband deals with. It turned out he had what are called (in layman's terms) webs across his throat caused by eosinophilic esophagitis. It took years to figure out. I hope your doctors figure your issue out quickly and are able to find a solution for you.

  21. Good luck with the throat thing….I had the SAME thing happen with a couple monstrous vitamin pills when I was pregnant. SUPER scary and messed up my throat badly. Let us know how you are – – sending prayers!
BTW, I really like the 45 degree.
    :)

  22. Joining everyone else in wishing you good answers and good mending. Rest up (if you can make yourself!) during this break.
My vote: 30-degree angle. It's less busy but makes a strong statement. The bigger impact of the 45 might cause eyeball overload if you layer patterns elsewhere. Then again, if anyone can make a boldly inflected room work, it's you!

  23. Oh that happened to me when I swallowed advil dry and then went straight to bed once. Quite painful. Be careful and drink a full glass of water after pills next time!

I like the 30 degrees. A little more subtle.

  24. I hope you heal soon! I would go for the 30* angle….I like the 45* but it calls a lot of attention to itself while the 30* offers a more timeless, classic look. Can't wait to see the final project.

  25. Hope all goes well with your procedure and with the new examples I say definitely the 30 degree angle, I like the wider plank look but I'm sure either will be gorgeous!
