Yesterday a lot of design bloggers came to New York and met in a long line in front of the CBS studios on 57th st.

I’m glad I didn’t have to pay for a flight to the city – the show was a little underwhelming. Absolutely NO mention of the 100+ design bloggers in the audience? What a huge bummer for all of us and a major missed opportunity for the Nate show.

I did enjoy the few minutes that Nate took to answers some Q&A from the audience. Emily (standing up in the fuschia and black) is asking him a question about blogs here. Nate said he didn’t really have time to read blogs on his own, but that he has a research intern that reads all of our blogs and gives Nate the highlights.

Also, I felt really lucky when they sat in me in the front row. And just before they started taping, they put Emily, the winner from Design Star, right next to me during her segment. We didn’t get to chat, but she seemed so cute.

Do you read her blog? She’s got a great writing style – she’s one of those girls that you instantly want to be BFFs with. Emily, will you be my BFF?

Regardless of the disappointing taping, the day was not a total bust. I got to meet so many of my
blogging friends.

Kirsten from Simply Grove, me, Nicole from So Haute

I had grand intentions of all sorts of photos, but of course, I forgot my good camera – and I left with only two crappy phone photos! Bummer!

Camila threw a little after-party with the Nest. It was so fun to meet the girls from Rue there! Have you seen the first issue? Congrats to those ladies for a job well done! I’m so inspired by women who have a dream and then take the bull by the horns and make it happen. Amazing!

Anyway, it’s pretty crazy to think about blogging vs the real world – and when the two spheres collide. It was cool and strange to meet people that I’ve been blog stalking for years. I loved hearing your voices and seeing how beautiful and stylish you all were in person! I even heard Nate comment to one of his crew members about the exceptionally gorgeous audience. :)

Thanks for the good times yesterday! I can’t wait to meet more blogging friends in the future.

xx

  1. Jenny! What a perfect recap. It was so delightful to meet you. You are as amazing in person as you are on your blog! Here's to blogger friends becoming friends in real life! Can't wait to read more about your adventures in NYC …

  2. How lovely to meet some pals from blogland! I'm sorry the show didn't live up to its potential yesterday, but happy for you being able to meet so many inspirational women. :)

  3. Is it just me, or is the Nate show a little off somehow in general? I had high hopes for it bc I like him and his designs and always make sure to watch him on Oprah, but the show is pretty disappointing.

  4. Hi! i'm sorry i didn't chat, i was super super nervous – it was my first talk show. But thanks for giving the shout out. And YES we can BFF's…well, after we meet. If you are ever in LA, email me. xoxo
    Emily

  5. So great to meet you Jenny! I agree it was a major missed opportunity for Nate to not mention his blogging audience! Should have been a no-brainer…

    All the best,
    deb

  6. As I read other people's recaps of the show, I couldn't wait to get to yours — and I saved it for last. I was thinking, "OK, all these people are REALLY upset about it and now think Nate is a complete know-nothing. I bet that even if Jenny feels that way, she isn't gonna say it outright on her blog." And I was right! ;) You are such a class act.

  7. You're spot on with this recap. The show was a little "meh", but meeting all of my favorite bloggers was amazing. What a fabulous group of ladies!!! I am so glad I met you yesterday. I didn't get a chance to say goodbye, but wanted to extent an open invitation to hang out or give you any NYC recs or WHATEVER. I'm in the city all of the time and would love to hang out (especially with someone who also is design obsessed!).

  8. Unfortunately, I can't say I am too surprised. The Nate Berkus show has been really disappointing. Maybe it's the daytime talk-show format, but I have not been a fan. In fact, I cancelled my DVR of it yesterday. I hope he doesn't dilute his brand too much, and crossover to "Extreme Home Makeover" territory.

  9. First let me say all of you are darling. Secondly, thanks for the honest recap. I've taped 2 shows and watched them both, and thought maybe it was just me being underwhelmed!? And, finally how nice to sit by Emily Henderson. Her new show was a truly refreshing surpise! The first thing I've taped/seen on HGTV that I enjoyed watching in what seems like forever!

  10. How strange that the show reached out to design bloggers and then ignored them…compliments and criticisms spread quickly on the internet!
Well, clearly it was a great networking oppotunity for you all!

  11. I would have probably flown to China for the chance to meet you so I am SO glad I went. Thanks for being so nice :) I could have sworn they put Emily next to you on purpose. Two design stars. Side by side.

  12. You were a tad nicer about it than I was… i seriously think they should have brought you on stage and had you build something.

    Total Bummer.

  13. I didn't go but I'm so glad that many of my fave design bloggers like you went. It's fun to see you all in photos and read your individual recaps. I feel like you've all brought the blog community a little closer and that's a great thing.

  14. enjoyed seeing you there – wish we'd had more time to talk. I watched the monitor during the segment with Emily and you were totally visible during the whole thing, so we will be seeing a lot of your cute face when the show airs!

  15. I am a follower of your blog having started when you had your sweet baby last December. I was interested in the Nate show only b/c of you bloggers out there. I taped a few of them and only watched one with my husband. It was the 365 dresses episode. After it was done, I told him that I hoped the blog show was better. It felt to me like a filler show or song or something. Like I would only watch it if I were home sick in bed and had my choice of bad cartoons or Nate, I would choose Nate and possible flip to the cartoons just to see if they were better:( but glad you got to meet up with some of the others. Thanks for sharing the pics and staying classy.

  16. It's always great to meet other bloggers…so I would just think of that experience ..the whole Nate deal for most seemed to really suck….sorry to hear. I'm glad I didnt go…i;m sure there are other arenas bloggers can meet without having to wait for a seat at a studio audience. :) xoxo!

  17. It was so nice to meet you yesterday! It was great getting to chat for a little while – it's great to actually get to see what people are like in real life – it is definitely what made that trip from Chicago worthwhile for me.

  18. Well, I've always wanted to be on your blog, so I guess this is my big moment :) We ended up getting in at 1am last night thanks to the storms in NYC. 5 hours on a plane (4 of which were on the runway). Yikes!

So great to meet you. It was a treat!

  19. It was a pleasure to meet you Jenny! You are a doll and gorgeous as well. It was so loud at the party I felt I was screaming at you…(well, because I was!) Hope to have the opportunity to see you again in the future and all the best with your new life in the big city! Janell

  20. Wow, I think the show really missed the ball. Too young to live in the moment I guess. Hopefully, they'll be self aware enough to realize the mistake they made.

  21. I think it's so disappointing to read about great design bloggers being such divas. Why does a television show have to recognize you for being in the audience?

  22. bummer that it was a bit of a disappointment. i felt the same way when we went to the test-taping in chicago a few months ago. also, thanks for the pronunciation on ikat, i've totally been saying it wrong :)

  23. You're recap is much nicer then most of the blogs I've read. I wouldn't be surprised if they turned around and focused on design blogs to make up for the mistake. I'm still jealous of all the girls who went though!!

  24. You and many of the women you mentioned here are as equally talented as Nate Berkus. Glad you got to meet so many of your blog buddies.

  25. Hi Katrina! Thanks for your comment – and I really appreciate your concern. I certainly didn't mean to come across like I deserved to be recognized by Nate! I didn't expect anything like that. I just thought it was strange that they would invite us to come to the taping and to participate in the show (I received an email asking for project submissions) and then there was no mention of us bloggers at all. I think there just could have been some better managing of expectations from the production side of the show. You know? I think we were all expecting to show up to a show about blogging (ala Martha), so it was confusing when there was no mention of blogging really in the show at all.
To be clear, I know none of this was Nate Berkus' issue. At all. It was a production thing. And I'm not upset that the show wasn't all about bloggers. I just thought they missed a cool opportunity here.
Thanks again for your comment and candor. I'm so glad that you're a reader.

  26. You are soooo talented! Out of all the design bloggers you are one my favorites for your ability to combine colors in a suprising way. I think you are blazing a trail and putting an end to matchy matchy.
That being said, this whole-Nate should have achknowledged us- is a bit pathetic. Every time you and other bloggers post, we the readers let you know just how much your creativity is appreciated in the form of comments. Your egos are stroked over and over again, and deservedly so. I think all the bloggers have gone a bit to far with the whole thing. It's not very gracious.
Sorry if I offend..it is your blog after all. I just thought you may be interested in how some might perceive it. I am actually giving up some of the other blogs, but I can't give up yours.

  27. It was to nice to meet you on Tuesday!! Now that you are in the city full time you and Camila should plan another get together asap :)

PS- I love the face I'm making in the background of the photo of you, Kristen, Bryn and Traci- classic thinking face hahaha
