The owner of the Plum Cushion shop, Melanie, is as kind and as talented as they come! I cyber-met Melanie when contacting her about making some KWID Imperial Trellis pillows in the charcoal colorway for a client. Even though she didn’t have a listing for that specific colorway in her etsy shop, she was more than happy to make it happen.
I asked Melanie about her background for this post. Don’t you just love learning the story behind the genius?
“I formally learned to sew in college, I was a Family and Consumer Sciences major, but I remember sewing Barbie clothes out of silky nightgowns when I was 5 or 6. After college I taught for four years then decided to go back to school for interior design. I’ve been in the industry for almost five years now. I have a major obsession with high-end textiles. Because of my appreciation for their quality and beauty I’m incredibly persnickety about the construction of my products.”
I think it’s awesome that she would sew her own Barbie clothes as a child! Not surprisingly, I was obsessed with arranging and rearranging my Barbie’s furniture…
Check out some of the fabulousness at Plum Cushion:
Prices start out around $75, which is amazing considering she uses only the best designer fabrics available and includes down inserts with your purchase! With the holidays just around the corner, now would be a good time to order a pair of gorgeous cushions for your best friend, sister, mother (or yourself!!).
And speaking of the holidays, I’m completely loving her Christmas stockings! Such a creative idea!!
Please show Plum Cushion a little love and pop on over to the shop…
I spent the better part of today [wrestling my kids] in fabric stores. I’m totally loving these colors…

At the request of some readers, I’m putting together a Flickr group of pelmet boxes that YOU have made using this basic tutorial. I’ll also be doing a post about all the submitted projects.
If you’d like to be included, please send me an email with a link to your blog post or a picture of your DIY pelmet. Please resend this info even if you’ve already emailed me or left a comment.
Won’t it be inspirational to see what other DIYers chose for the pelmet box shape and the fabric they used?
First up: Maria’s chic golden combo.
She used a stencil from JoAnns to make the pattern on the pelmet, which looks like an expensive trim from afar.
LOVE this project! Thanks for sharing, Maria!!
Don’t forget to submit your pelmet box project this weekend!!
Does anyone know who mills these fabrics? Or alternative places to purchase them? I need lots of yardage and better pricing than what I’ve got here. Bocce in Linen, available at Calico Corners. Among other things, I noticed this magazine at Home Depot… that featured this cool project using an Expedit and some striped contact paper… which made me happy, because I too have a really cool project coming up that features patterned contact paper. Yesterday was also a good day because it was trash day. And one of my neighbors left this mid-century clock in the alley for pick up…
Yes, please. Don’t mind if I do.
Big question: paint or stain?
Check out these adorable office supplies, courtesy of the dollar bins at Michael’s… Trellis, zebra stripes, houndstooth and stylized mums. Nice! I also picked up these napkins from the dollar bins. They’re technically Christmas napkins, but I think they would be adorable any time of the year for a bright and cheerful birthday party a la Kate Spade.

I’m shocked every time I realize that we’re already in the middle of October. I had a birthday this weekend, so we took a trip up to some of the shopping near the Wilmington and Philadelphia area on Saturday. The leaves are starting to turn. I love the autumn time.
We went out for a delicious dinner and I also bought some new maternity jeans just to freshen up the pregnancy wardrobe. I always HATE all my maternity clothes by month seven, so it’s nice to have some new things to put in rotation.
Other business of the weekend: the dining room.
I was a busy little bee sewing up some new curtains for the dining room, inspired by this image from Miles Redd’s portfolio:
I ran out of pleating tape though and had to order a new roll online, which won’t get here til later this week. So, despite my best efforts, the dining room pictures will have to wait.
I hope you had a great weekend!

About a year ago, I was super inspired by this image of lacquer boxes in bold colors with sharp black borders.
The price tag was in the hundreds for these boxes though (I think from Vivre or Plantation Home?), so I went the DIY route with some basic wood pieces from IKEA.
I gave them all of the boxes two coats of turquoise craft paint.
Then I taped off the edges and painted in the black borders.
Then I spray painted everything with lacquer (though, if I was doing it now I would use my favorite Wipe-On Poly in gloss).
I don’t think I’m tricking any visitors into thinking that I spent hundreds of dollars on these boxes in my office, but I like them!
