Gallery Wall of Mirrors

There’s a hallway in our house that has the lowest ceiling you could possibly imagine and not a ton of natural light. Actually, there’s like, no natural light. It’s a dark, squatty hallway. The playroom is at one end, our bedroom is at the other and the guest bathroom and the laundry room are in…

There’s a hallway in our house that has the lowest ceiling you could possibly imagine and not a ton of natural light. Actually, there’s like, no natural light. It’s a dark, squatty hallway. The playroom is at one end, our bedroom is at the other and the guest bathroom and the laundry room are in between. So, you know, it’s a high-traffic space and I wanted it to be a little less of an eye sore.

Mirrors are a great way to brighten up any space. It really is like adding a window! In my case, I wanted to add about 10 little windows…

I have a ton of art hanging around in the hall and in the guest bath, so besides the added light factor, mirrors felt like a good way to find balance with the rest of the art on the nearby walls.

I’ve collected most of these mirrors over the years from thrift stores and flea markets. It’s not all that easy to find a good place to hang an individual small-sized mirror, but I love the way they all look hanging together!

And I really like the way the gold tones mix with the silver/nickel and the wood. I’ve mixed metals all over our house, and this little hallway sort of brings all that together for me.

Remember this pretty mirror from the garden level entry of the brownstone? The square mirror to the left was a more recent find, on sale at Anthropologie.

The Mexican mirror was another more recent find at a cool junk store near here called Turtle’s Treasures. Only $5!

The Louis Phillipe style mirror is really old – the glass is foggy and super warped. I love it!

It’s always a good idea to hang art at eye level. I hung these as if there was a chalk line at my eye level and then I centered the mirror(s) on that line.

It’s sort of a dark day here, so you’ll have to trust me when I say the mirrors are really brightening up this hallway! :) I’m so happy I was able to find a place to hang all these little treasure of mine, and that they look all the more special hanging together.

  1. Katie – I love the idea of adding to the wall over time! A fun collection!

Wendy – Happy to do a post on sconces! I'll start putting it together.

About the rugs – I don't know of a machine washable rug off the top of my head. I know you can hand wash some of the cotton Dash and Albert rugs. The indoor/outdoor ones can be hosed off outside! :) I've seen random ones at Homegoods here and there, and of course there are a ton online.

I bought this Turkish kilim at the Chelsea Flea market. There are tons of option on eBay though. I just did a post about my favorite search options a few days ago. Hope that helps!

  2. I love this idea, especially on a wall that has room to grow…it would be fun to collect cool mirrors over time and continue to add them in. And such awesome art pieces in the neighboring spaces!!

  3. I hope you'll do a post on wall sconces. I have four that I want to replace, but after several years of searching I'm no closer to finding any I really like!

  4. Jenny where is the runner from?! Love that pattern! While on the subject, can you recommend any runners that are machine washable? I need one for the kitchen that I can just throw in the washer. Thanks!

  6. Love it. What are the chances of you doing a video walk-through of the whole house? I love seeing glimpses of all the different coloured rooms from the hall. It would be so nice to see how it all works together!

  7. Looks great! I've been collecting for and adding to a gold/gild mirror gallery wall since 2006. Wherever we live the collection adapts to whichever wall until it fills up. I love it!

  8. OOOOh… add more. I have been considering this for my very, very, very narrow passage way. Inspired by Annie Brahler's lovely collection of mirrors in hers. But I too, prefer a mix of metals rather then one constant throughout a house. I love the reflection of the clouds in the mirrors………….add more?, paint the passage pale sky blue – a walk in the clouds! Love the house, truly inspiring.

  9. The mirrors are so lovely! And I noticed a peek of your wall sconce; I have the exact same one! Maybe that's not so amazing as they may be pretty generic. I can't wait to see what you get. I took the shade off mine just as incentive to get a replacement so the ugly bare fluorescent bulb is staring at me. I've been looking but can't find what I want.

  10. would it be possible to add small lights down the center of the ceiling? i have to wonder if adding some light at the top might "elevate" the ceiling a little? the mirrors look beautiful … such a fun collection!

  11. I love a great mirror gallery wall and yours is no exception! My husband works from home and wants me to hang mirrors in a corner of the wall. I love the idea, but I can't quite figure out how to make it look balanced. There is a fiddle leaf fig in the opposite corner which may provide just enough balance, but I am still not sure. So for now I will just continue collecting mirrors. I would love any tips you have for me!

  12. The ranch house where I grew up in Paradise Valley, AZ had a dark long low-ceiling hallway like yours (but narrower) with 12 doors leading to the back patio, family room, the living room, the master bedroom, 3 kids' bedrooms, the boys' bathroom at the far end of the hallway, plus a toy closet, a linen closet, a coat closet and a walk-in out-of-season closet! I can't even remember what it must have been like with 2 parents and 6 kids coming and going in and out of that hallway! There were baby photos of us kids lining the walls and quite a few sconces to give the hall some light. I just remember my mom hating how narrow the hallway was!
