Happy Memorial Day! We’ve been out of town all weekend, and we’re having the best trip! :)

It seems like we’ve been traveling and sleeping in hotels a lot this year. Whenever we sleep on a different mattress it reminds me that it really is time for us to get something new this year. I’m ready to invest in a special mattress at this point, and would love your recommendations if you have any!

We slept in this pretty room at the Four Seasons DC a couple weeks ago and I loved the mattress (though it looks like they sell their mattresses only over the phone?). We’ve also loved the Westin Heavenly Bed. Do you have a favorite?

(This photo below has nothing to do with mattresses, but seriously, how amazing is this lilac grasscloth and the mirrored closet doors in the hotel room? I especially loved the combo with the Biedermeier chest and the modern art.)

PS If you’re looking for a really affordable and decent mattress, I totally recommend this latex mattress that we’re using in Heather’s room upstairs. It’s delivered in a large box (so no delivery charges!), and once you unwrap and unroll it, the latex expands back to its full shape.

It’s really a pretty nice mattress for the price. Great for a guest room!

  1. The only thing I have to recommend is unless you want to go shopping for new sheet sets too not to get an extra deep mattress. Someone gave me one that I use for my daughter and the only sheets I can find locally to fit are the Jersey tshirt style.

  2. The problem with almost all mattresses is that they are full of flame retardant chemicals. Not good for respiratory health, and who knows what else. And I daresay most of us are not smoking cigarettes in bed! We have an organic mattress from Lifekind in California and love it. They have one that is rubber and coils, so you still get some spring if you want it. It's made from the purest materials and is the most comfortable mattress!

  3. We have a Westin mattress and LOVE it. Would get one again. My girl has a cheapo from Costco that she loves.

When we were looking for mattresses one of the websites actually tells you to sleep in hotels. We also got a really good rest at the Westin which lead us to ordering it.

  4. I would have to agree that the Four Seasons mattresses are awesome! Also love their pillows – I bought one a few years ago after a blissful night sleep at a Four Seasons and it was money well spent!

  5. My husband and I got a Serta icomfort Donald Trump line that has coils and then a memory foam layer on top. We have been sleeping wonderfully since we got it 6 months ago.

  6. My husband and I just bought a new mattress last year. He has arthritis in his back and was insisting he needed a firm mattress. I disagreed. We went to a mattress store and they had a computer there that analyzes your pressure points, etc. I was skeptical but it was amazing. They reinforced what I was telling my husband- he needed something with some softness to it, like a pillow top. We tested out 4 or 5 mattresses and chose one we both liked. It is a BeautyRest pillow top. We absolutely love it. My husband has had so many good nights now versus the pain he was always in every morning. The salesperson was so helpful and the analysis testing made all the difference. I know my husband would not have tried out a pillow top until she recommended it.

  7. hi Jenny,
I work for Nordstrom, the westin goes on sale every year for the anniversary sale, it starts july 19th this year! i love love love the heavenly bed!!

  8. The first mattress I bought was a Sealy Posturpedic. When I got married we bought a new Sealy Posturpedic and the old one went into the guest bedroom. I always get comments on how comfortable the bed is.

  9. My mattress is one of those products that you buy and want to shout it from the rooftops how fantastic it is.

I have the Eco Signature mattress:
    http://www.anatomicglobal.com/mattress/eco

It's a soy based memory foam so it doesn't sleep hot like Tempurpedic, which is petroleum based. Because it's natural, it doesn't have the VOCs that traditional spring mattresses do.

If you're used to a spring mattress, then a memory foam does take some getting used to. But it's honestly the best sleep I've ever had. I don't wake up when the dog jumps off the bed or when my man comes to bed after me. It is probably one of the best purchases for my home I've ever made.

  10. We have a fosters and sons. It's sort of temper pedic like. But not completely. We tested so many beds and just love ours. Only problem is we hate getting out of bed in the morning!!

  11. I've slept on a futon my whole life and kindof love it. They're not hotel-bed comfy, but they're really good for your back and feel super solid underneath. Honestly, the thought of sleeping of metal springs really freaks me out. My current one is just all cotton, 8 inches thick, wrapped in wool batting for moisture and temperature control. And I think it was $200? I get that you're probably looking for something more luxurious (in which case I'd still recommend going the organic, flame-retardant free route that other people have mentioned), but for anyone else reading this, futons are a great choice!

  12. Cristin: Thanks for the heads up!! I didn't know Nordstrom sold Westin beds and I can get triple points when I buy one! July 19 is going on my calendar.

  13. Check out The Mattress Underground forum for all you want to know about finding a quality mattress that fits you. I just got a new mattress for our room and loved learning all about my options!

  14. Me again… I meant to mention that the guy who moderates The Mattress Underground forum thinks very highly of the mattress line you bought for your guest room (Dreamfoam by Brooklyn Bedding), so you may appreciate his insight during your mattress search.

  15. I always stay in Westins when I travel just because I know I'll get a good night's sleep! Also, two things I didn't know until someone I work with enlightened me–the heavenly bed is made by Beautyrest and you can negotiate the price of a mattress!

  16. I just bought a hybrid cool foam + coils, and I love it. We kind of liked the icomfort gel, but were waffling…and then they finally came out with the hybrid. Plus the low profile boxspring to offset the ridiculous mattress height :)
After 10 years on a Sam's Club Serta (full size, I might add), we are in heaven!

  17. We have the Heavenly and I don't love it. Eventually put a memory foam mattress topper on my half but hubby still loves the firmer feel :). I almost recommend a regular ol mattress with a delicious topper! You can find them at Costco and they are truly heavenly. (And wallet friendly and you'll never know the difference with a fitted sheet over).

  18. We have the Savvy Rest, which we bought at a local store that sells organic mattresses. It's latex, no VOCs, and suuuuper comfortable! You can customize it so one side is firmer or softer than the other. That way both sleepers are happy. Good luck!

  19. I have a Simmons Beautyrest World class, their world class line is top ranked by Consumersearch 9website that aggregates consumer reports with amazon and other retailers reviews. Love it and would buy another.

  20. My husband and I just purchased the Heavenly Bed this year from Pottery Barn and I love it! Worth every penny! I also know that they have a pretty good sale a few times directly on their website too!

  21. We have the Grand Bed by Tempurpedic. It is the most comfortable bed I have ever been on. We tried *hundreds* of mattresses and were not loving any of them. Then at one store we saw TGB. The Grand Bed was on its own platform with its own lighting. The prices weren't listed. It was totally one of those "If you have to ask you can't afford it" moments. I told my husband not to even try it. He did. Then I did. And we both knew nothing else would do. We have a king and it literally takes four strong men to move it (and they struggle!). It is absolutely amazing.

  22. If I were mattress shopping today, I would again buy a latex product: I've had a latex mattress since 2002 and have been very pleased. (Latex is heavy but worth it!)
I skip built-in pillow tops–I understand that's what "goes" first. So my mattress is latex, firm with no extras–recently we added a gel memory foam topper with a cotton cover. Now super happy :-)

  23. Is there anything worse than deciding on a mattress? We just bought a memory foam mattress – the Serta Savant. Can't say I'm loving it, but we have 120 days to return it. We got my son the Serta Bradbury. Now that's a comfy mattress! It's a hybrid: part coil, but with a substantial memory foam layer. If we don't keep our memory foam mattress, we'll trade it in for the Bradbury.

  24. Another vote for the MattressUnderground site – I did a lot of lurking there last year and ended up buying a faux temperpedic from foambymail. Unfortunately, I'm finding the memory foam to be too hot with my hot flashes and will need to get a gel foam topper which is supposed to sleep cooler.

  25. We bought a Design Within Reach Sonno Prima Medium Mattress a few months ago and love it. We ended up putting our old mattress under it for a little more height (instead of a box spring – not recommended by the company but oh well we needed it) – and now it's SO comfortable, like a cloud! It comes rolled up like the latex, smells a bit at first when you unroll it, then it's fine. DWR has a mattress sale semi-annually I believe – we got ours around Thanksgiving at a discount!

  26. We have a natural latex mattress with a pillow top (not tempurpedic though) and it cured my previous 20 yrs of insomnia (oh, if I had known it was all because of a mattress….). I second the comment about being careful about how deep the mattress is. I have to buy special sheets because of that (luckily you can pick up decent ones at Homegoods for not too much though).

  27. We invested in a Savvy Rest and L O V E it. Invest is definitely the right word, but so far it's been worth every penny. They sell natural latex mattresses that you can order in few different support styles to customize your whole bed or even each side. I did a TON of research and this company and their mattresses definitely came out on top.

  28. check out The forums at Mattress Underground. We saved a bundle of $$ with Rocky Mountain Co. and that were on the recommended list.

  29. We recently swapped our old pillow top/box spring for a Sleep Number bed with built in memory foam top. (The key here is the memory foam –it makes a huge difference!) I cannot say enough great things about our purchase; I only wish we'd done it sooner. My chronically aching back–which isn't very old, mind you–feels so much better. My husband and I are both sleeping so deeply and peacefully, too. Neither of us realized how often we were waking in the night to turn over and reposition ourselves. Best purchase in a loooong time! I think you can test drive these mattresses at some Marriott hotels.

  30. I used to love the WestinHeavenly Bed and the bed at Sheraton hotels, until we bought a mattress for our new bed. I took a chance on a Living Social online deal for a memory foam mattress from Zen Bedrooms. It is the best, and we found it for $350!! You can use it with a platform bed or regular box springs. I wake up less and toss and turn less than before. It breathes really well and keeps me cool, as I usually run hot. Now I am no longer jealous of the hotel beds, and any time I have to sleep away from home I get a little reluctant to part with it.

  31. I ditto everyone who wrote about the Serta icomfort duel coils + cooling memory foam layer on top. Never slept better. We hate to go out of town because we love our new bed, best buying decision so far in 2013…Good luck!

  32. I recently was able to purchase any mattress I wanted as a gift. My bf and I tried out tons and in every single store we both kept choosing sterns and foster firm pillow top deluxe. I LOVE it so much I hate sleeping anywhere but in that bed. It's firm and supportive but has enough pillow on top for me to wedge my little shoulder into. Heaven

  33. My favourite mattress is woolen…100% It's sort of like a deep futon. A dream to sleep on..warm enough in winter, but cool in summer. It wicks away any moisture. Best of all it lasts practically forever; if it ever gets too compacted it can be re-fluffed, and cleaned, although I usually just roll it up a couple of times a year. Most that you see are wool-wrapped cotton or foam which is cheaper, but the pure wool is amazing if you can swing it. I've had mine for years and am not sure I could afford it now!

  34. i know, what is it about those hotel beds! We're in desperate need of a new bed and mattress. Still sleeping on the same one since college over 10 years ago. I hear great things about the sleep number ones.

  35. Latex foam mattress are constructed from natural or synthetic rubber are nearly as well-liked by owners as the memory foam mattresses. Reviewers say latex foam is springier than memory foam and doesn’t retain as much body. Many Hotels are using Latex foam Mattresses.

  36. Hands down the best mattress is a Stearns and Foster. I slept on once staying overnight at a friend's house and it was so comfortable that I had to ask. I came right home and purchased one (they're not cheap) and have loved it! Now, I will buy nothing else. I bought one for our guest bedroom and everyone who stays with us raves about it!
