Over the weekend I hung up some more art in the living room. I had left the wall shared with the kitchen pretty uncovered up until now because there’s a gallery wall in the room already and I didn’t want to overpower the space. But mostly the lady portrait painting and an abstract photographic print I had hung up for a few months just felt lonely and too sparse to me. Here’s the before shot:
I had a meeting with Bloglovin’ on Friday morning at Cafeteria, which is right by my favorite Housing Works location. So if course I had to pop in just to see what they had, and there was a treasure trove that day! Thrift stores in NYC are usually not so fruitful and they are really ridiculously expensive, but some times you can luck out. One of the things I brought home was this exhibition print. I fell in love with the shade of green from across the store and was so glad to see the print was only $15.
I also hung a piece of art I bought a couple years ago at the flea. I talked more about it here, but a lot of times you can find vendors who have purchased a deceased artist’s entire estate. It’s a good time to buy up a few pieces of an artist you like for almost nothing. I bought a lot from this artist’s estate. This one was a rice paper and ink drawing called “If Not Sound, Then, Music is Feeling.”
I like how the four pieces play off each other. And I’m happy with how the kitchen pass-through is less of a focus on that wall now.
We’re getting there! Slowly but surely the bargains are finding their way to me :)

Your place looks great! I am so happy you found some great bargains. Art is tough, seems like everything I find and love is so out of my price range. I have had some luck on etsy.com. I am so glad to know you found a great piece that was a steal. I like seeing before and after shots, the new pieces really work. BTW, I love the guitars hanging up!

I love that you showed how to work with a kitchen pass-through because we have one in the house we're renting and it kind of kills me. Yours looks awesome and camouflaged with your art.
I think hanging art high and well placed always "opens up" a space and makes it feel so much larger. Your home is beautiful and I love that your girls are growing up surrounded by such interesting art.

Love seeing how this room especially has come together. It feels so homey and welcoming – much more than the loft (which was beautiful but felt like you were struggling to figure out how to "make it work" much more than this space, which feels very natural). Maybe in a way slightly smaller spaces just make more sense when furnishing and decorating!

Housing Works can be so great. I work at 23rd and 5th and for some reason I always forget to go hit up all the thrifts further east on 23rd or Chelsea. And I'm in desperate need of art for my walls!
Wow, I adore your living room! It looks so collected and eclectic. I really need to take some advice from you. We're currently renovating and redoing our house and I am dreaming day and night about decorating it, but am very impatient. I know, as you said, that it'll be better if I let it develop over time and find just the right things when they come to me, but for some reason, that's not helping my impatient side. That's why I love thrifting, though. It may take some time, but you will find amazing stuff! Thanks for sharing!
