Cheap and Chic Curtain Rod

This IKEA curtain rod is a favorite of mine. It’s less than $30 and looks great as is in a brushed nickel finish, but I especially love to paint it with Rustoleum’s Metallic spray paint in brass (not gold! too pink). You can pick up a bag of inexpensive rings to also paint while you’re…

You can pick up a bag of inexpensive rings to also paint while you’re picking up the Rustoleum at Home Depot.

  1. Jenny,

Ikea is such a great resource if you are creative. Thanks for the curtain rod tip. I love your blog and try to check it as often as possible. I have 3 little girls ages 1, 3, and 5…possibly the same as yours??? So time is limited which I am sure you know :)

If you ever need to escape the city on a hot summer day let me know. We live in the Catskills (under 2 hrs from the city) in an area often called the "unHamptons", haha…Your welcome to spend the day in the country with us and have a triple playdate.

    Best,
    Alana

  2. Just wondering how the spray paint holds up with all the movement of the rings? Any chipping? Do you lacquer the rod/rings too?

  3. Yes agreed, the brass is a great color it gives it a natural brass look so it doesn't look like you sprayed painted it. I use it a lot! And I've also done my curtain rods.

  4. Thanks for the tip Jenny. I am in need of a simple but stylish curtain rod for our master bedroom, I think this might be it. It looks so much more expensive.

  5. Love this idea – hope you can post a finished picture – I'd love to see the final look. Does the paint rub off if you use the rod / rings too often?

  6. i have this rod in my bedroom but bought pewter rings from bed bath & beyond. i never even thought about spray painting! great idea, yet again! xo

  7. Nice, clean lines, whatever would we do without spray paint Jen?!

  8. I'm with Lindsey Tollefson, looking for 120" rod on the cheap! I have a 92 year old home with 22 windows on the first floor…4 of which need 120" rods. Any resources??

I currently have a DIY project seen on a show, using large eyelet screws, thick gauge wire and thermal panels that I punched large grommets in. They were pretty cool at first but are now seriously starting to sag….they need some serious attention!!

This is the first time I have responded to your blog, I love it!! Keep it up! :)

  9. can the ikea rod be extended to cover 16 feet? i'm struggling finding a budget friendly rod for a long long wall. am thinking about conduit at this point, but would love to find another option –

    thanks!

    beth.
