Have you ever stumbled across a blog and then subsequently neglected home, family and self for hours/days until you had devoured every. single. post? Oh Happy Day was one of the first blogs that did that for me. Jordan has an amazing eye and is talented in just about everything she tries.

It was a really fun day when she contacted me to work with her on decorating her San Francisco apartment.

We’re still working on her entry and bedroom, but check out what we’ve done so far with her living room:

Jordan wanted more color and pattern in the space, so we used Celerie Kemble for Schumacher’s Hothouse fabric as our color palette inspiration, since it went so well with Jordan’s navy Crate & Barrel sofa. We used this print for a long pillow on the sofa.

We had two mid-century chairs recovered in a small scale trellis patterned green velvet.

We used this navy and white stripe fabric from IKEA for two throw pillows with white piping.

There needed to be more seating in the room, but space was limited, so we opted for this small settee by Nate Berkus for HSN.

I love how the ikat pattern works with the big floral and the velvet.

Jordan had a small round ottoman with a great shape but it needed to be reupholstered.

I found this really beautiful yellow fabric a while back at a fabric outlet and bought the whole roll because I loved the color and pattern so much. I think it’s perfect in this space.

We also had an orange velvet pillow made, seen here next to the Jonathan Adler lemon pillow.

Jordan used to have her computer and office space in her bedroom. I’m a big fan of having the office space incorporated into the living space, especially for city-dwelling, work-at-home mothers. It’s not always an option for everyone, but I love being right next to my kids while I’m working.

We got an IKEA armoire off Craigslist, painted it BM Casco Bay and added my favorite brass ring pulls.

The best part is the office space that can be completely shut away.

Next to the work space is a little play area for Jordan’s son, Moses. Don’t you love the white Bertoia kid’s chairs? They are from Room Service Home and are a great price (see my post about Room Service here).

{As a side note, I really admire Jordan’s curated toy collection. I know first hand how easy it is to amass an obscene amount of plastic junk. It feels like 90% of the toys we own are unnecessary. I’ve done some spring cleaning in our play room (aka other half of my office) and I’m committed to continuing the editing process. Jordan recommends reading this really interesting article about children and toys.}

Other elements in the room include the TV console that got a couple coats of my favorite red, Rustoleum’s Saftey Red. The previously mis-matched bookshelves were painted BM’s Spring Dust. The area rug is from IKEA. And the awesome cowboy print has a great back-story.

There are a couple more projects left in this room, but Jordan is having her second son any day now, so I’m pretty sure she’s willing to call it a day with decorating!! I love it and hope she enjoys spending time here with her soon-to-be-expanded family!

  1. Wonderful, and it totally resonates with me as a mom who wants a lovely space, but has to share with my child's toys, play kitchens, etc.

Can't wait to go back to all the links when I have a chance.

Thanks for the sneak peek, and good luck to Jordon with the delivery of baby #2!

  2. I love how the different fabrics look together! Jordan's blog was the first blog that I ever went to and I got completely sucked in to every single post as well. As I did with your blog too!

  3. I've been following your blog for only a short time, but when I saw the pictures (before reading), I knew it had to a room that you did. It's very "LGN" and very wonderful!

  4. "Have you ever stumbled across a blog and then subsequently neglected home, family and self for hours/days until you had devoured every. single. post?"

Um, yes. That would be when I first found YOUR blog! :)

The edited toy collection really inspired me, too. It makes me want to just purge and organize all kinds of my girls' toys!

And since I'm commenting, I have to tell you… My daughters' names are Evelyn Marie and Amelia Jane… So of course I love the name you picked out for your latest edition! :)

  5. Beautiful, serene and somehow still stimulating space. How difficult/ expensive is it to recover a round ottoman? Found a good one at Goodwill yesterday but didn't get it and might run back for it. It was in bad shape but it was a nice round shape.

  6. Splendid, as always! Love the kids' chairs. Do you think they would hold-up outside? Also, I saw at Target that Fischer Price has re-issued vintage toys (like the bumblebee whose wings spin when you pull it, jack-in-the-box, etc). I bought some for my kid. They're made of decent materials and are cool looking! The vintage look without the pricetag is the best part.

  7. I'm currently decorating my bedroom on a very tight budget, so I am slowly devouring every single post of YOUR blog and getting some great DIY ideas. Reading through the archives, I also realized that your husband and I must have graduated from law school together (I was also class of '09). I don't think I ever met him, but still…small world!

  8. I need to read the article about the toys. We have a huge play room in the new house and I bought a wood kitchen because the kids loved the one at the toy store.
But… mostly Jake has taken an interest in a rope from my mother in law… and he spent several days with wooden blocks.
I don't want to buy any more toys… I think we will go with books and crafts instead!

And I'm thinking of painting my ikea tv cabinet this summer.
We will see if I have the patience.

  9. oh. my. goodness.

does it mean i have no individual style if i want to replicate every part of this? we plan to make over our living room and sitting/reading/library area this summer (have a long to do list of other more pressing things to get to first), which has allowed me far too much time to agonize over every little detail of what i want it to be. Your blog has really helped me figure out what inspires and resonates with me most. I obsessively love your colors and think I will use them as my guide in choosing fabric to reupholster 2wing chairs, cover the back of some bookshelves with wallpaper (both things your blog has inspired me to do!), and pick out a new or craigslisted sofa and love seat. thanks for helping me start my day excited about all the possibilities … now if only I didnt have this pesky day job to distract me for the next 7 hours…

  10. Love the room as usual, Jenny. I beleive you've used that Ikat fabric before–on a console table in your house maybe? Do you have any idea what it's called? I'd love to use it in my grey nursery. Thanks!

  11. i have loved jordan's entryway forever & am so happy to see her living room! it is beautiful. the layers of fabrics & color are fantastic!

  12. Lucky you and her to work on such a collaberation. I have noticed the kids play area image before on other blogs and admired it. Nice to know the source for my own babe's play area inspiration.

  13. I also asked this on Jordan's blog awhile ago and didn't get an answer but I also really really want to know where that TV console is from!

Do you know by chance Jenny? Or seen anything similar for not to steep of a price?

  14. The room is great! I've been wandering about painted furniture, if you could use different colors in the same room or if it would look trite. Your post answers my question, it looks fresh and FUN! I guess the key is to pick the right colors… I've recently re-painted an old hutch a BEAUTIFUL peacock blue and I'm tempted to paint everything in my house with it, front door, swing, dressers… But, I like how you incorporated different colors in this living room.
Question: I see the roll of fabric that is on Nate Berkus' settee, can you buy the fabric by the yard? If so, could you let me know where you bought it?
    Thanks for the inspiration!!

  15. It looks sooooo good!!! I just love your style Jenny. It's so happy & fun & colorful and pretty. You've really got it goin on and I know how happy Jordan must be.

    awesome.

  16. Looks lovely! I'm only just now– after 3 years– allowing any plastic toys into the house, and then only scale-model German toys (like a fascinating backhoe my son adores). Kids who come for playgroup never have any idea what to make of our (sparse) collection of wooden toys, but I love it.

I love your use of paint finishes in here!

  17. Hi Jenny,
would you mind sharing your source for the yellow velvet material used to reupholster the 2 chairs? Looking for something very similar. Thanks!

  18. Love that Schumacher fabric and how you used it as a jumping off point for your design. Great tip for your readers and beautiful work!

  19. What a lovely transformation. Love all the color combos. I am wondering if it was difficult to paint the knotty pine armoire. Did you have to use anything special?

  20. Hello!
Everything is spectacular. I need to dig deeper into these posts. I was also wondering about how you painted the armoire. I had the same thought- to paint my Hemnes chest. My question is what kind of paint you used and how to make sure it comes out even and as professional as possible? Do you have a post about this somewhere already?
