Beth Allen is a talented artist and friend who lives here in Arizona in a historic ranch style home with her husband and young five children. Six years ago, Beth and her husband bought their home and have been tackling projects as a family ever since. Beth’s home is filled with color and character, and speaks so much to Beth as an artist and person. I’m so glad she agreed to let us share some of the special corners of her home and studio here!

Beth loves art and pieces in her home that are special, that feel like they tell a story. She is an avid thrifter (a kindred spirit!) and her favorite thing to hunt for is vintage paint by number paintings. Beth’s secret for decorating with kids in mind is all about thinking outside of the box. Like, she loves using vintage trunks and luggage for a storage boxes, and she loves framing her kids artwork. She also likes to let her her children help with her home projects, so they feel connected with and ownership over their family spaces.

Beth is an artist and her husband is an amazing baker! He owns Proof Bread and makes some of the most delicious baked goods I’ve ever tasted. Some of the goods are baked at home, so their house always smells like heaven! I’m on Whole30 right now, so I can’t even drive by their place. ;) Arizona friends, you can buy Proof breads and croissants at the Phoenix Flea and Gilbert Farmer’s Market every weekend. Run! They often sell out fast.
I asked Beth about how she likes to shop for art for her home. She recommends shopping for a mix of masculine and feminine, vintage and modern. She likes buying and supporting other local artists that she’s met at the markets she sold at. She also loves to support other up and coming artists on Society 6. She often buys art that is totally different than the style she paints.

Beth works in the sweetest little studio on their property. Though she loves watercolor, her favorite medium is oil and her favorite thing to paint is portraits and still life.

You can find Beth’s work in her shop and on Society 6. And don’t miss out – Every Friday she sells a original mini-painting on her Instagram feed!

Five More Minutes: Midweek Hosting

Nothing helps me get my house in shape faster than when guests are headed over! We are going to be traveling a lot in June and the thought of my house sitters seeing my majorly blah bathroom was such a bummer! Something had to be done, and fast.

 photo IMG_9031.jpg

Happily, Target Style invited me to shop their new spring collection from Threshold and Nate Berkus. Hello, dream job! They believe (and so do I!) that with just five more minutes of attention and the addition of just a few cool, what I call top-layer pieces, even the most boring space can become a showpiece room that you’ll be so excited to share with your guests!

 photo IMG_8948.jpg

Remember what my bathroom looked like when we moved in? Baby blue walls, weird vanity, dark baskets that shed everywhere, and absolutely nowhere to hang towels!

 photo DSC_0540.jpg
 photo DSC_0547.jpg
 photo fDSC_0559.jpg

I painted the walls Benjamin Moore’s Classic Gray (one of my very favorite colors!) and changed out the baskets, which helped for sure. But I knew the room could look a million times better and be much more functional with a top layer of cool accessories.

 photo IMG_9032.jpg

I planted a really hardy succulent in this great Nate Berkus bowl for on top of the shelving. Every room needs a little bit of greenery – even a bathroom! That oversized basket that we’re using as a laundry hamper is new from Nate Berkus, too.

 photo IMG_8994.jpg
We added six of these wooden hooks to the walls for robes and towels. I love the warmth that the wood tones bring in! And I’m obsessed with the white bath sheets and the adorable black and white towels with fringe.
 photo IMG_9007.jpg
 photo IMG_8959.jpg
I eventually want to replace the mosaic pendant light with something more permanent, but for now I hung a white paper lantern right over the top of the old pendant.
 photo IMG_8954.jpg

One of my very favorite additions to the bathroom was hanging these Threshold mirrors on top of my outdated sheet glass mirror. It only took a minute to put these up with a few large-sized picture hanging strips. I love the dimension they add!

 photo IMG_8987.jpg
 photo IMG_9028.jpg
There are some fabulous gold and brass toned accessories at Target right now that I just couldn’t resist, especially this glass jewelry box. I love to have a pretty place to stash my wedding rings at night before bed. And that pencil holder works perfectly as a make-up brush organizer!

 photo IMG_8977.jpg
And how sweet is the gold shaving mirror? I’m obsessed with the design – it is solid and looks so beautiful in person!
 photo IMG_8974.jpg
 photo IMG_9018.jpg
Those mint and navy turkish towels were on clearance and they look so cute with my green glass oil can soap dispensers (a long-time favorite of mine!). And I think the Moroccan-inspired bath mats are just the right pop of pattern in here.

 photo IMG_8991.jpg

But the pink stool! She’s the hero of my additions! I can’t tell you how much joy that little stool brings me. I tucked her in to that little vanity spot and it was like the whole room came alive, just like that! And suddenly I’ve gone from embarrassed to excited to show this room to our house guests! It’s so much better, right?

Canopy Beds Of the Non-Princess Variety

It’s so embarrassing to admit it here, but we’ve been sleeping on two twin mattresses pushed together with a king-sized feather topper – for the last two years. YIKES! It was meant to only be a temporary thing right after we moved, but here we are! Honestly, it wasn’t a big deal and that’s why…

It’s so embarrassing to admit it here, but we’ve been sleeping on two twin mattresses pushed together with a king-sized feather topper – for the last two years. YIKES! It was meant to only be a temporary thing right after we moved, but here we are! Honestly, it wasn’t a big deal and that’s why we let it go for so long. But the time has arrived and a real king-sized mattress is coming our way this month (yay!!). The sort-of bummer is the bed I made for the Domino shoot is too short for a true king-sized mattress. We’re giving that frame away to someone who wants it, and you know me – I’m just as happy to have an excuse to start fresh, so no big deal!
 photo IMG_4784.jpg
 photo IMG_4761.jpg
I’ve started looking around for a new frame and I can’t get the idea of a canopy bed out of my mind. We have really high ceilings in our bedroom and I think a canopy would fill the vertical space so perfectly!
Some of you might be thinking canopy bed = fussy princess bed. To which I say, WRONG! So wrong. It can be that, but check out how completely modern canopy beds feel in these eclectic spaces:
There are SO many great online options for canopy beds since the last time I checked. There are a range of prices here below, but some are only about $350 for a King! Crazy talk, right there.

DIY: House Number Door Mat

I’ve had a pair of black resin planter boxes out front for a while now and they keep getting these weird white marks on them that don’t really clean off. Every time I walk by them I make a mental note to do something about it. Then I saw this image on Pinterest:

 photo 885d20fb1fa990985caac22cf7d0b1af.jpg

White! Glorious, bright white. So fresh and so clean. Why fight the mysterious white marks and why spend big bucks on new planters when these are fine? So I busted out a can of primer and put on a good four coats. I love the chalky white finish.

 photo IMG_1104.jpg

I remembered my grandpa telling me once that white gravel is great for planter boxes because it helps retain moisture. Plus it looks so pretty! I picked up a $5 bag at Home Depot and that was more than enough for my two planters.

 photo IMG_1170.jpg

I’m hoping the rocks help me keep these new fig trees alive. The trees are supposed to be drought resistant, but that hasn’t helped me in the past. I really need to be better about watering consistently – or maybe I should just put these on a drip system.

 photo IMG_8777.jpg
 photo IMG_8808.jpg

The new trees looked so pretty, I decided my coir door mat needed an update too! I picked up a roll of contact paper from the dollar section at Target and looked online for a pretty number 2.

 photo IMG_1255.jpg
 photo No2_LogoFinal_FondBlanc_LR.jpg

Then I traced and cut out the contact paper stencil.

 photo IMG_8706.jpg
 photo IMG_8719.jpg

Then I removed the sticker backing and carefully pressed the paper into place, focusing on the inside edges. I also added some paper around the perimeter of the stencil to prevent overspray.

 photo IMG_8746.jpg

It’s a good idea to spray in short bursts directly face-on when spray painting a stencil, rather than moving all around – the paint just gets under the stencil that way.

 photo IMG_8758.jpg
 photo IMG_8760.jpg

No too bad, right? I am thinking about adding a border around the perimeter like these mats, but I sort of like the simplicity here.

 photo IMG_1281.jpg
 photo IMG_8796.jpg

We still need a new lantern out front and I want to replace the doorbell and add a dummy handle to the stationary door. I also want to have a piece of marble cut for the threshold – I only need about 3″ wide. I am buying a slab for a project I have for up in the studio and I think I’ll just have the stone guys cut a piece for me then that I could throw down with some cement glue.

 photo IMG_8806.jpg
 photo IMG_8838.jpg

I would love to have a little bench out here someday soon too. Maybe to replace that silly little plant shelf thing. I’ve been poking around looking for something pretty, but I think I would like to find a vintage piece. I did find some treasures for outdoor spaces in my online searching though! Check these beauties out:

My dear friend and assistant, Kate, adopted the most beautiful baby girl, who was born just a few weeks before Margot (future BFFs!). Kate’s sisters, mom and I threw her a little baby shower here at the house to celebrate. I always mean to take lots of photos when I’m hosting a party, but things end up being too crazy. Thankfully my talented photographer friend, Sarah Webb, snapped a few photos of the spread we put out on the back porch. Kate’s sisters and mom took care of all the drinks and the delicious food (bread and cheese and fruit, and the most delicious pain au chocolat from Proof Bread).

 photo IMG_2569.jpg

Kate and I are both Diet Coke lovers (our habits have only worsened from working together this year), so it felt appropriate to have a DC bar at her shower. Also, please don’t judge me that we keep a giant pebble ice maker sitting on our back porch. :/ I was going to move it for the shower, but it weighs a million pounds and it was helpful to have ice for the drinks table! (…It’s totally cool if you’re judging me right now, but believe me when I say that ice is WORTH IT.)

 photo IMG_2597.jpg

I sewed some last minute skirted table cloths for the food tables and the little striped runner on the drinks table. And we strung little felt balls for a subtle backdrop behind the tables.
 photo IMG_2587.jpg

I made tissue paper tassels and bought yards and yards and yards of fringe in all different shades of blush, white and gold from a local fabric and trim warehouse called SAS and we tied them to the big 36″ balloons that I bought on Amazon. We had balloons all over the house and fresh flower arrangements and that was pretty much it for decorations inside. We kept it simple.
 photo IMG_2584.jpg

 photo IMG_2582.jpg

I made the flower garlands using the same steps I did in this tutorial for Domino. I like how it looks with the garlands on the top of the tables too.

 photo IMG_2600.jpg

I just used whatever flowers they had at Trader Joe’s and Sprouts – roses, parrot tulips, snap dragons, even some soft pink carnations. I’ve been using baby’s breath lately too. It’s back and it feels fresh again to me. Especially in a big bouquet all by itself! Wouldn’t that be pretty?

 photo IMG_2565.jpg

It was a really fun day. I loved having an excuse to celebrate one of my favorite people in the world and her most perfect, beautiful, long-awaited daughter!

Here are a few more of my favorite marbled paper walls. It’s a great way to add a little excitement to a wall or a nook:

And I think it’s still so pretty for smaller applications. I really love marbled paper on the back of a bookshelf or secretary especially.

If you’re in the market for some pretty paper for a project, here are a few of my favorites available online right now, ranging from $3-8 per sheet. I’m thinking one of these could be a winner for my powder bath project.

I Have This Thing With Floors (the Hex Tile Chapter)

My parents’ big remodel is in the home stretch! There are three bathrooms that need tile and that’s just about it. But three bathrooms worth of tile is a ton of tile! And we’re at that point in the project where my parents are sort of sick of spending money so every dollar spent needs to really count. We used some of the quartzite from their kitchen for the countertops in the bathrooms, so that helped us with the budget, but that limited our tile options too. As we learned picking a backsplash tile, quartzite is gorgeous but is hard to pair up with tile!

 photo Screen Shot 2015-04-07 at 9.38.08 PM.png

Cement tiles are so cool and I would love to get to use them here, but they’re not in the budget. I also really loved this teak wood tile, but again, it’s on the pricey side. What IS in the budget though is $3.99/sq ft hex tiles. We found a ton at local discount tile stores all around the Valley. Floor and Decor has some really pretty grays and neutrals which would look great with the quartzite. We’re just going to pop out and replace tiles of different colors in a repeating pattern on the mesh sheets. The gorgeous and talented Gwen from The Makerista did this in her bathroom and it turned out SO WELL. I think she actually had to place each tile by hand, which sounds really labor intensive, but look at the results! What a beautiful floor!

 photo Home-Depot-The-Makerista-Hex-Tile.jpg

My parents live in a city called Snowflake, and we’ve talked about doing something like these snowflake patterns here, but we’re still thinking about it. Is that too literal? Part of me sort of loves the idea.

It’s true, I can shop and spend with the best of them, but the older I get, the more selective I’m becoming. I’d rather buy one special thing than ten just-okay pieces.

 photo IMG_0363.jpg

This year my goal is to edit out those pieces that I’ve picked up for cheap at thrift stores that I’m not completely, completely in love with. I’ll be keeping my eye out for those really special things in the meantime!

When long-time LGN supporter, Chairish, invited me host a big giveaway today HERE and to curate 50 of my very favorite picks, I started to notice some patterns emerging. There are some pieces of art/furniture/lighting/accessories that I have and I think I’ll probably keep for decades to come… and always want to buy more of! It’s like a magnetic attraction, you know what I mean? Here are some of those things for me:

1) Accent chairs in a unique shape. I CANNOT EVEN HANDLE THESE. So, so good.

 photo Screen Shot 2015-04-01 at 11.01.28 AM.png

I seriously almost didn’t post them so I could buy them for myself, but I am saving up for a new kitchen, so my loss is your gain. :) Plus I already have a pair of mid century Italian accent chairs that I really love.

2) Adorable little settees to tuck in small rooms.

3) And dreamy abstract art to hang above them.

4) Super-cool bent plywood statement chairs

5) That also look like exceptionally fabulous office chairs.

6) Footstools and benches to tuck in corners and under console tables.

7) Unique, modern lamps for sitting on even the most traditional furniture.

One of the big projects I’ve been working on for the past few months is my parents’ home remodel. We added on a new carriage house and a huge ramada on the back and then totally gutted about half of their house. Just this week the kitchen installation process started and my mom and I are so happy to see our vision come to life! She leans toward more traditional style, but really appreciates clean lines. This kitchen, featured on Domaine Home was one of our inspirations. Bright, clean and airy.

The cabinets started to get installed this week and my mom’s been texting me photos along the way.

This image was also an inspiration, though we had nothing even close to this ceiling height. That was one of the two big challenges in the space. We had hoped to be able to open up the ceiling a little more and maybe do a coffered treatment, but it was prohibitively expensive to gain what would only be a few inches in the end.

We loved the large glass globes in the above image and thought they would be perfect for over the 8′ long island.

These globes are 18″ each and I think they’ll really make a statement without making the ceilings feel lower or obstructing any views in the kitchen.

We used a local cabinet maker and I love the job he did here with our simple shaker style full overlay cabinets. There’s going to be another row of cabinets here to the right over the prep sink area that will be the appliance garage. The electrician installed the lights too close to the cabinets, so we’re waiting on that fix to happen first. :)

The kitchen is sort of landlocked in the center of the house, so there are no windows (which was the other big challenge of the room). We did add a couple of french doors just behind and to the left of this photo, but because the kitchen’s not just completely flooded with natural light we went with a really soft white on all the cabinetry (Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee). We thought about doing the island a different color, but we wanted to keep the base colors very simple so we could add lots of color in accessories and other furniture. There will be a built-in banquette area to the right of this photo and we wanted some flexibility with color and pattern options with the upholstery and the finish on the table and chairs.

The appliances and counter tops will be installed in the next couple days. We went with a Macaubus quartzite for the counter tops and backsplash.

It’s mostly a soft gray color and has the beautiful veining that we all love, but it wears much harder than a marble – more like a granite.

We’re doing extra long polished nickel bin pulls on the drawers and small button knobs on the cabinets and top drawers. Some of the hardware was backordered, but everything should be in later this week, so in just a few days we’ll have all the pieces of the puzzle in place!

The floors will be installed last. We went with an oiled French oak (thanks again for your input and reassurance!). I think it’s all going to be so pretty together! Stay tuned for after photos…
