Better Homes and Gardens asked me for a handful of ideas on how to spruce up a home with not a lot of cash (which is one of my favorite things to do!). It was so fun to see my name in this month’s issue. Thanks, BHG!

My suggestion was to use mirrors for an easy room update. I think there should be at least one mirror in every room, if only for the sparkle factor. If there’s a way you can put the mirror opposite a window, you can really brighten up your space.

Mirrors can be really (REALLY) expensive, but they can also be surprisingly reasonable if you’re shopping at the right places.

Whenever I’m looking for a high-impact mirror, I check my local antiques markets – you know, those huge stores where dealers can rent out spaces. I can usually find a great vintage mirror for $40 or $50. Remember you’re looking for something with an interesting shape – don’t get too caught up on the frame’s finish or even the condition of the glass. Those things are all easy to change.

Thrift stores are a little more hit or miss with mirrors I’ve found, but when you score, you score big! Housing Works here in Manhattan has been extra good to me. As always, Craigslist is a great resource. EBay gets tricky if you’re trying to source a large mirror on a budget. Shipping costs can be outrageous with the heavier pieces.

I love how strategically placed mirrors can look like windows. So pretty and bright!

DIY Les Touches

The Brunschwig and Fils snow leopard pattern ‘Les Touches’ is a favorite in the design blog world (I recently posted some cheaper substitute fabrics here). I get all kinds of emails asking if I had any remnants of this pattern to sell at a discounted price, which sadly I don’t. Here’s a solution for you if you love Les Touches, but can’t afford the price tag.

Emily sent me an email about her dining chairs that she bought on Craigslist and reupholstered in an inexpensive white vinyl fabric from Joanns.

She printed out an 8×10 image of the Les Touches pattern (first image, above) and used a sharpie to recreate the image on her vinyl seats!

I love this idea. I never would have guessed the outcome would look this good. And it kinda seems like a fun art project – like something you could do while catching up on reality shows!

I think the vinyl is a very practical choice for Emily’s dining chairs, but really, the sharpie would work well on any fabric with a tighter weave, like an indoor/outdoor canvas or a brushed cotton. Then you could use the fabric for pillows or cushions if you wanted to.

Thanks for sharing your great DIY, Emily!

I found this vintage set on Craigslist for $150, which included delivery. They came in absolutely pristine vintage condition and the scale is just what I had in mind. Love them.

I’ve been really into blonde wood lately, so I would hate to cover up the finish on these, but the color is not really working with my ivory sofa and the new yellow carpet. I’ve been drawn to geometric decorative paint finishes and I think I could pull something like one of these off here:

Have you done anything similar? Depending on the pattern, I’d probably have to buy or make a stencil, but I think it could be a really fun project.

How to Remove White Heat Marks on Furniture

During the holidays we had some friends over for a dinner party. We served an extra hot meal that night and after everyone left and the dishes were cleared and the table linens removed, I discovered foggy white marks all over my beautiful new table. This one was the smallest, though brightest mark.

Before I had a chance to freak out too much, my husband did some googling and we discovered that on some pieces of furniture if moisture (usually from the steam condensation on a hot dish) gets under the finish, white splotches called heat marks will appear and will stick around until treated.

You’ll be surprised to learn, as I was, that to remedy heat marks, you apply… more heat and moisture! Weird, right? I just used two folded over clean white linen napkins and sprayed them down a little with water. You want there to be several layers of cloth between your iron and the table surface. Then I ironed over the napkins on top of the heat marks for about 15 seconds with the iron on a medium heat/steam setting. Don’t just set the iron down though – keep it moving.

I have no clue why my table looks so dark here. Must have messed up the camera settings.

It was like magic and the heat marks disappeared (though in these photos I can see I missed a spot that doesn’t show in person).

Anyway, random post today, but I thought maybe some of you might have had a similar issue with your wood furniture. Or if in the future you see these heat marks on a thrift store table, don’t pass on it – it’s an easy 15 second fix. I can remember one gorgeous coffee table that I didn’t buy because of it’s heat marks. I thought I would need to strip and refinish the whole thing! Who knew?

**A little disclaimer: this trick worked for me, but I guess a few other readers have not had success. It might be wise for you to try a less conspicuous area on your table first. Be sure you’re using damp cloths with your iron on a medium setting with steam. And be sure to keep your iron moving!**

1) I’m so glad you guys like my new rug! It came yesterday, but it’s still all wrapped up along with the new rug pad. I wanted to finish painting the cabinets that flank the tv (you know, the ones that I silver leafed the glass). The final coat of paint goes on this morning after the school drop offs and then I’ll unroll the new carpet. Can you even believe my self control!? I’m shocked myself.

Speaking of my new rug, Rick from ABC called me yesterday after seeing my post and said people have been calling from all over the country placing orders for Weinrib pillows and rugs! Exciting! As a thank you, he said you can get an extra 10% off items from the ABC Basement by mentioning my blog.

So wherever you live, if you’ve got a Weinrib style in mind, give Rick a call and he’ll do his best to help you. If you’re local, don’t forget to check out all the amazing hand-knotted rugs and of course the remnants section. There’s more of my yellow and cream Karastan…

2) Next item of business: I’m really loving this print available at West Elm. Do you see all the birds? This simple kind of piece looks great in a gallery wall or above brightly painted furniture.

3) The last thing is I’m really excited that the projects at Casa Komenda are finally getting some attention. Over the weekend, we sold almost all of the extra furniture and in the freed up space, we set up the new double-length desk. Also the daybed was delivered! Can’t wait to share.

On Monday I hung the star sconces next to the vintage gold mirror. It’s hard to tell but they are really nice wall lamps. I was super impressed with the quality and I don’t actually even mind the oil-rubbed bronze finish. Even still, I’ll probably end up painting them a fun color on top, and the wall color on the cord cover. Also, the shades will get some ribbon trim.

The vintage bookshelf was (still is!) in really bad shape. I used literally half a tub of wood filler to smooth out all the cracks and holes (all that funny brown texture on the shelf backs). Also, I added the fancy studded trim from Michaels and I love the look! I need to pick up two more strips to finish off the bottom row and then I’ll paint the whole thing and get it styled with baskets and books. Progress!

Alright, enough rambling. I have a Purdy brush and a mini roller waiting patiently for me…

I have been trying to find the right living room rug for ages. I needed something really huge (I was hoping for about 12×14), which is almost impossible to find in stores or online. And antique rugs get astronomically expensive when they are that big. I’ve purchased carpet remnants for odd-sized rooms in the past and thought I would just do that again and maybe save up for an antique rug down the road.

I’m not going to go into detail here, but I had two very negative customer service experiences with two different Home Depot carpet departments here in the NYC area that really put me off. I was all ready to order a rug in this great diamond pattern, but it didn’t happen either time because of incompetent/rude employees. And I’m pretty laid back, so you know it must have been bad if it upset me!

The carpet is by Stainmaster and is a great deal at about $2.50 per square foot and then $2 per linear foot for the binding. You guys all know that I love Home Depot – I am a loyal customer there usually, so I don’t mind sharing these photos in case you’re also looking for a large area rug or wall to wall. Hopefully you have a better ordering experience than I did.

Before I tried for a THIRD time to order the diamond carpet from Home Depot, I decided to stop into the clearance section in the basement at ABC Carpet and Home (a big thanks to Abbey for the tip!). They are having a 50% off sale right now on unfinished remnants.

I ended up getting this 12×15 gold and cream striped Karastan remnant (in the middle) for just a couple hundred dollars — about what the Home Depot rug would have cost.

It’s getting delivered this morning and I can’t wait to roll it out in my living room! Rugs are probably my least favorite thing to shop for (they’re SO expensive!!), but they really make a big difference in the feel of a space.

A HUGE thanks to ABC for their incredible customer service. Special shout out to Rick, who has worked there for 28 years! If you’re in the New York area, I highly recommend stopping by to check out the huge clearance basement. Grab a Madeline Weinrib rug or pillow for half off while you’re there.

PS Someone should buy this beauty. I think it was 8×10 (too small for my LR), and I was still sooo tempted.

It makes me endlessly happy to think of him and how he approached life and work – he was so precise, methodical, and dedicated. He used to always say “Anything worth doing is worth doing right.”

Grandpa liked modern and clean-lined houses and furniture, so most everything he built was simple but well-designed. He would have liked the shelves in this nursery and this banquette.

Desire to Inspire

It wouldn’t take more than a trip to the lumber yard and a $35 hand saw to make these pieces in a weekend.

Have you ventured into the world of wood working? I’ve done only little projects, but some day I’d love to try something on a larger scale – like a big coffee table or a desk.

Grace has a birthday party on Saturday and then Sunday we’ll get together with some friends to watch the Super bowl and let our kids play. I think we ladies will try to squeeze in a little craft project in between the commercials. :)

I do have a house project on my to do list though. I bought these wall lamps last week and they just arrived in the mail. They look so great in real life! I especially love the star detail on the base.

The shades remind me of these amazing custom shades that I’ve always been obsessed with:

Thibaut

The wall lamps will hopefully be hung this weekend. I’m going to have them flank this mirror that I bought at an antique store for $40.

The mirror and lamps will go above this tall vintage bookshelf (it’s about 50″), which is getting painted and trimmed out this weekend.

I bought a couple of pieces of this funky moulding at Michaels for about $2 each and they’re just right for the bookshelf I think.

Do you have any fun projects planned for the weekend? Are you throwing a Superbowl party?

I still love silhouettes and think they are classic. But if you’re sort of over the look, one way to make it fresh again is to use color rather than black for the portraits, a la artist Carter Kustera. Mr. Kustera is pretty much the king of the modern silhouette. He has painted Michelle Obama’s portait and he does lots of work for Jonathan Adler and his partner Simon Doonan (so also Barneys).

Not positive, but the silhouettes in Angie Hranowsky’s kitchen look like Carter Kustera portraits.

This installation was at the D&D here in New York. So cool, right?

I come from a big family and think it would be amazing to make a wall like this in my parents house one year for Christmas. And then every Christmas thereafter we would spend a day updating the silhouettes. I like the idea that everyone could pick their own color.

I’m sure Grace would want to be purple and Claire would be pink. I think I would be bright red and Michael would be a deep green. Evie would make a lovely yellow – that baby is pure sunshine.

It’s actually really fun to assign family members colors and then try to guess what they would choose for themselves. It’s hard not to make it about personality! What’s your color?
