When Joanna and I were discussing bedding, we decided something mostly white was going to be the best choice for this room. I almost always prefer white bedding – it’s just so fresh and clean-looking. I’m crazy over the punchy simplicity of Olatz bedding, but I’m pretty sure my first car cost less than a set of Olatz sheets and a duvet! Jenna Lyons had a lovely coral red Olatz duvet that was our inspiration for making our own.

Bedding in Joanna’s Room

I bought a very discounted white Frette duvet at an outlet and a yard of brushed cotton in a lovely tomato red color and asked my fabric work room to piece together to duvet with a 5″ border similar to the inspiration photos. I asked them to wash the red fabric before sewing to prevent any color bleeding when washing.
It is super easy to find a professional seamstress on craigslist that will do work just like this for not a lot of money (be sure to ask for photos of their work!). I could have pieced and sewed the border myself I think, but I ran out of time and I am pretty sure the labor here was less than $100, so it was a good thing to hire out.
For less than $150 Joanna got a custom duvet cover that provides a gorgeous, graphic punch and boasts a lovely thread count! I think that’s a great purchase.
So cheery! I love how your are inspired by so much and share it with so many. Bravo.

Great option! And I love how crisp the red and white look with the rest of the room. Now, if only we had Craigs List in Dublin!
I think I'm in love with that claw-foot tub in the second photo!
Great choice on the duvet :)

Where did you get the pillow on the bed with the botanical print? I love it! The room looks great.
You did such a fabulous job on Joanna's apartment! That is such a simple, inexpensive DIY (or job for the tailor), and it looks identical to the original. That was a brilliant move!
Thanks for passing on the seamstress advice…i hadn't thought about craigslist.
Love the duvet-timeless!
Great duvet. Love the headboard!
Love this idea. The pop of color is perfect for that room!
Great duvet, great bargain and precious pic!

This is amazing – I actually think Joanna's looks nicer than Jenna's. I also think it's awesome that you made it work on a smaller budget.
I love it! I really need to find a good work room so I can have little projects like this done!
Looks lovely. I *adore* white bedding, but I can't seem to make it work with a mechanic, a cat and two dogs. Sigh.
This is genius! I've been waiting to come across a white duvet cover with the perfect-colored border, and now I can make it!
Wow. What a great idea?! I LOVE the room. That headboard, that curtain…Crushing on it all.
Perfect for any lower budget solution!
Looks great!
I love it…looks great! I have been thinking about doing something similar for awhile now and might have to try it soon. And since I barely know how to sew, I think I will look someone up on Craigslist.
I didn't realize hiring a seamstress could be that inexpensive. Good to know!
love love love the colors in this room. You are always so creative.
I need to know about the drapes! they are so amazing
I thought Jenna's room might've played a part for inspiration. It's a great room and the bedding is my favorite part!
So creative! Love the color too!
beautiful! I was lusting after a pricey duvet cover a few years ago and my mom said basically – duh, we can make you one at a fraction of the price! it is such a gift to have a crafty mom who has been doing DIY projects with me since the 70s…although I appreciate them much much more now!

love it! do you have a seamstress you recommend in nyc?
Loved seeing this in refinery and loved seeing you at Alt! I should pick your brain for a few loft tips. Thanks so much for being so lovely!
I don't know why I've never thought of sewing/customizing a duvet? That is brilliant! And what a wonderful result. Thanks so much for sharing this idea. Andrea
I love it, what a great idea!
One of my favourite parts of Joanna's room make over was that duvet cover. Thank you for sharing such a great DIY tip!
As soon as I saw this bedroom you did, I wanted to redo everything in my room (which is a good thing, by the way.) Thank you for the inspirations!
That room looks awesome! So hip and fresh!
SO lovely- and what a great, money saving idea! and I LOVE- literally- the fabric on the toss pillow behind her- it's on my Pintrest Fabulous Fabric page and I am contemplating painting our powder room in a mural inspired by it
Your taste is spot on!!
Such cleverness dahhling! trés cute!
I love this…what a great alternative to spending a small fortune on bedding!
You're so talented Jenny, Joanna's one of my favorite rooms I've seen in a long time but seriously that cute baby boy of hers steals the shows, he is the prettiest little boy I've ever laid my eyes on!!
loving the bright pop of what little red there is on the comforter.
Love the results! I am curious how the seamstress was able to do this with 1 yard? It seems like one would need at least 2-2.5 continuous yards for the "long" banded stripe. I would love to do this with hem tape!
I adore that pillow fabric too and would love to know where it's from!
Pretty! Can you tell me where you got those photos of Jenna Lyon´s home? I would love to see more of it!
I a dying to know more about the headboard–the tufting is so deep, I LOVE it! Do share. Please?
I love this cute duvet:D
Definitely a great purchase! I think the punch of graphic red was perfect for the space. It came out beautifully!
Hi Jenny! What fabulous work in Joanna's bedroom. Question/clarification on the duvet: Did you have the seamstress cut up the duvet and piece back together with the border, or did she stitch the border into the duvet? Just want to be sure I give my seamstress here the right directions. Thank you!
