I had meant to order some of my favorite brass hardware from Martha Stewart’s line at The Home Depot for the laundry room redo. Most of her brass pieces are only available online and so I was up a creek a bit by the time I remembered to place an order. It was way too late in the game and I needed a Plan B.
So I went to a couple different hardware stores and rounded up my favorite knobs, bin pulls and ring pulls. I didn’t really care what the finish was on these because I knew I wanted to spray paint them all gold… But I forgot to buy the spray paint while I was at the hardware store. #sleepdeprivation
I did remember about the spray paint while I was at Michaels though and in a moment of frustration I decided to buy a can of gold spray paint there and just make it work.
The spray paint I ended up buying is called Design Master and, let me tell you. It is amazing. Not too pink, not too sparkly, not too flat. It’s definitely my favorite gold spray paint so far. Such a happy accident!

Design Masters have good products, so I hear..

Good to know. I'll definitely give it a try. I love your countertops!
Did you use a deglosser first? I've tried the old spray paint on knobs and it didn't work. Heard you need to use a deglosser first.
looks fabulous!
well this post came at the perfect time! I was laying in bed last night thinking about the knobs on my new baby's dresser and I was wondering where your o-ring pulls were from… thanks! Love the spray paint tip too.

i have a can of this that I have been waiting for the right project for- now I cant wait to get it out and try it on something!
Now I think you should spray paint the laundry cart gold!
Where are the ring pulls from? I love those and havent seen them around.
Have you spray painted hardware before? Do you find that it stands the test of time or starts to wear off after a bit?
Hey jenny, I followed Centsational Girl's advice and used Krylon's Short Cuts line in their "Gold Leaf" finish and was really impressed. I wrote about my project here: http://anneworthington.blogspot.com/2013/02/thrifted-china-cabinet-before-after.html
thank you! i am about to do an IKEA hack and was looking around for gold spraypaint recommendations!
Definitely will need to try this! I hate when gold spraypaints are much more of a rose gold than the can makes them out to be! Seems like that's always my luck!
I will definitely need to try this brand… thanks for the info!
I have used Valspar Gold Metallic for everything and I have really liked the color presentation and how it will not rub off as it cures {I utilized a different brand for a silver metallic a few times and it would rub off well after it had "cured". I forget the brand. Sorry}.
This isn't a post about the spray paint I used, but it shows something I did paint — the gold sunburst mirror:

I have the Design Master spray paint in silver and I love it! It goes on so nicely and the bottle seems to last forEVER! I will definitely have to check out the gold next time I get on my gold kick
dang. those pulls are pretty cute. *note to self…*
I like Design Master and have used the Gold Medal. I found it to be a very bright gold. A great option, I'm usually a Rustoleum junkie too. Are those ring pulls a DIY? Your laundry room is fantastic!
great timing! we're going to be moving soon, and I foresee a lot of gold hardware in my future :)

Thanks for this great tip! I've got a lot of fake-aged kitchen cabinet knobs that would benefit from a good spray paint job.
Love the orange baskets! The ring pulls on the drawers are killer.
Great laundry room! And such an impressive before and after! May I ask where you found your o-ring pulls?
This is my favorite gold spray paint too. I use it on everything! :)
We use Design Masters for projects in the flower shop. Two thumbs up.
Gold stuffs make this gal happy so congratulations on successful spraying!
I´ve done this many times before and most spraypaints stay quite well with wear and tear. But if I know I´ll be gold´ifying some insanely high traffic knobs or things where my son is likely to smudge remains of play´doh, dinner or whatever, I always make sore to lacquer the hardware before installation. There are lacquers varying from high- gloss to matt finish. For a clean freak like yours truly, I always go for the high- gloss for better wipeability. One can also polish them to insane levels of shine.
… my apologies. I meant to say I always make *sure* to lacquer the high traffic knobs. With spray lacquer as well.
Question:
Am I the only one who has gotten sticky gold residue all over my hands when I use gold spray paint? Is this simply due to an inferior product? I've sprayed cords on string lights (made of plastic) and metal. Or should I be adding some kind of top coat?
Thanks!

Design Master was the only brand of spray paint we used when I worked for an event design company… Such great colors and a very distinctive scent! HA!
I'll have to try Design Masters! Those ring pulls look snazy and yay for no pinkish undertones!
THANK YOU! I've been searching for a good gold/ brassy spray paint for ages. I'll try this one next!!
Great tip. I love what you did with this room! amazing!

i hate michaels.
Ok, I'm so glad you posted this! I have always wanted to try those spray paints, but never bit the bullet on them! It looks like they have some really great colors too. You're the second person this week who has told me they've used this brand and the gold looks so good! When you first posted I thought some of the hardware was the Martha, because the color looks so similar. Thanks for being the guinea pig! :)
We've been recommending Design Master's gold on The Gracious Posse. If your laundry room is any indication, your house is going to be amazing! Best wishes!
The ring pulls are from Lowes! They're in a special section in the front of the hardware aisle where the pulls are mounted on wood drawers. Hope that helps!

Hi Jenny,
I was wondering if you could tell me where your ring pulls are from. I've been searching for some and am at a loss.
Thanks!
Bummer, Sarah! How many coats did you spray? It must be the finish on your hardware. You can use a deglosser on the hardware, but at this point I would probably just sand or lightly scuff up your sprayed hardware, spray on a primer coat (Kilz is the best), then two light coats of the gold and then a light clear coat on top. Rustoleum makes a great clear coat.
Hope that helps!

Hey Jenny!
Love your blog & all your amazing ideas. Quick question – I used this exact spray paint on my hardware and have been having a lot of trouble with it scratching and coming off. Do you have any tips for keeping it from doing that? I didn't even put the knobs on for several days after painting to be sure it dried. Is there a top clear coat that would seal it better?
Thanks!!
Sarah
