Thank you all for your kind comments about our work-in-progress kitchen! (It is a mess right this minute. Flour and sugar and spices everywhere as we begin the prep for the Feast (somehow what my kids have been calling Thanksgiving?). Exhibit A.)

I took it as a sign that my readers know me well (and not at all that I’m boring and predictable) when a few of you guessed early that I would probably be painting the inside of the cabinets a crazy color.

Who, ME?

The insides of these old cabinets were not great and they had to be painted no matter what. So I thought to myself, why not bright persimmon red?! (which happens to be the answer to a lot of my color conundrums.) I figured something this bright would be a welcome addition to my dark kitchen. But it would be like a secret-surprise-bright-welcome-addition, you know?

My friend came over last week, opened the drawer for a spoon and yelled “Red drawer!!!” Mission accomplished, I say.

PS Just found this. So predictable.

  1. I found pretty patterned paper liners that I just lined my linen closet with. I used nail heads for the front edge.
I think it dresses things up on the inside.
    pve

  2. I think its a fabulous idea! And when I started reading your post, I guessed, red….and yup it was. I featured your kitchen on my blog the other day, as an inspiration to other fellow renters! I so wish my landlords would let me paint my oak cabinets!

  3. Love the combo and the fact that you didn't do a white kitchen!!
I should probably paint my cabinet insides too- they are so gross. I will definitely use a foam roller for the doors though. Feeling thankful mine are just slab!

  4. Love the idea, love the colours. I could be off my rocker, but I think the back wall (first picture) is screaming for a loud, bright wallpaper :)
I wish I could visit your home and see these colours in person, pictures never do them justice.

  5. the floor!?! in one picture it looks blue and white but in other pictures it looks like terra cotta?
I love the red inside your cupboards!

  6. That's beautiful! What color is it? I've been looking for a persimmon red without even knowing that's what I was looking for. Your kitchen looks amazing.

  7. Good to know it is not just me…my six year old referred to it as the 'feast' yesterday too and I had no idea where he got that term from!

  8. Love it! Growing up our house had watermelon pink cabinet Insides. Always a big surprise since that wasn't the color theme for the rest of the house at all. The house was built in the fifties by the builder who did the whole neighborhood.
My parents eventually painted over the pink except in one little area-some high cabinets over a bar sink. Loved finding that bright watermelon pink after forgetting about it for many years.

  9. Great drawers–always ready for a gathering! Love the green top matches in their container against the color of the drawer but how do you ignite them? Do you turn on your stove top?

  10. I love that the other post was 2 years ago. And I love the red drawers! You are predictably unpredictable. ;) I'd likely opt for chartreuse…

  11. You are creative as well as you have very nice color sense. As you have colored your kitchen drawers with red color, it is looking very attractive. Really amazing.

  12. Installing a new kitchen is our major to do for spring. I was still looking around for inspiration.
    Just found it.
    THANK YOU! :)
