Hello! The kids had school off today for the holiday so we’ve been enjoying this crisp fall day with some of our family visiting from out of town. Before they got here, I put up a lot of the kitchen cabinets (so close to finished!). Things are definitely looking better, but I’m sitting here looking at the walls and thinking the space would look so much better with a full wall of subway tiles.
Since we’re not doing stone counters, I think these Carrara tiles would be really pretty. I’ve never used them before. Have you? Maybe you have a great source? I saw these at Home Depot recently for $6.96 per sq. foot.

Looks beautiful, you should go for it! We wanted to choose darker wood cabinetry and counter tops to complement our kitchen in Sicily, Italy, but were glad in the end that we chose lighter, warmer cabinetry and counter tops. I looked into those HD tiles. The ones here had no veining at all, I was bummed. I'm not really certain how to find affordable carrara subway tiles that are ensured to have at least a little of the characteristics described.
Hi Jenny, have you ever been to area in Flushing right around Golden Oldies, the antique store? It's a mecca for tile stores, both my mom and sister scored tile for their bathrooms at a fraction of the cost of most stores (negotiating is ok esp. if u pay cash) not to mention Golden Oldies alone is worth the trip! Oh, do it! We just completed our kitchen backsplash using those exact tiles and we are really pleased. There is a ton of variety, veining, and character in the batches that we used so maybe it's a matter of luck? They are really lovely and I think they look pretty high-end, especially for such an affordable product. We have a walnut butcher block countertop and I think the contrast is just right. Good luck – it's amazing how a nice backsplash can change the look of the whole kitchen!
I think you should go for it – you won't be happy without something there. Plain white porcelain ones would be a good choice too, but the Cararra will look richer. I find Nemo Tile to be a great place with classics at very good prices – subway tiles, hexagons and penny rounds, etc.
Yes! I just used these in my bathroom and I LOVE how they look. They were really affordable, but ended up looking way more expensive than they are, and so far they've held up really well. I love Carrara subway tiles. Have you ever checked out Calacatta marble? It's warmer with gold/ grey veining. If you order from HD just be sure to get extra so that you can pick through them a little. Sometimes their orders have two or more lots. {I'm in the tile and stone business so I had to chime in.}

We used builders depot to do our bathroom. The shower is carerra marble subway tile and the floor is the basketweave. We absolutley love it! And the company has great rates and customer service.
I actually have used that very tile in a bathroom for a client and it worked like a dream. It will look fab!
Absolutely go for it! Just be sure to use white thinset or your marble will take on a yellowish grey color from using the typical grey thinset.
We used the 12×12 Carrara marble from home depot and cut them in half, to make a larger subway tile on our kitchen walls counter to ceiling. I love the result.
It looks fantastic in the kitchen! My good friend's home was just featured in this month's issue of Better Homes and Gardens (The Johnstons). If you look, you will see that she has an entire wall covered in marble subway tiles in her kitchen. I say do it!

Jenny, I used these tiles in my kitchen and they look amazing. I wanted the grey veining and some in the boxes had brown, so I was the crazy lady sitting on the floor in HD opening and repacking boxes. My husband acted like he didn't know me :). A HD employee asked if I needed help and said that people do it all the time. Ha! You won't be disappointed!
I've actually used these same tiles and wasn't able to find a more affordable option. You can see them in my bath here and here in these links which is in progress. I absolutely love them and if I one day do the kitchen again I would put them there.

love carrara and for the back splash at that price, you cannot go wrong. you may want to try just a simple white tile with a dark grout and see which one cleans up easier.

We did a light green penny round, and found them on Overstock.com for about 1/4 of the price. With a lot of stuff I try to buy local, but if you're going with Home Depot anyway, I'd recommend going on Overstock. Plus, with us, it was the difference between $1,200 and $300. There was no noticeable quality difference.

We have used those exact tiles as backspash in our kitchen. They do look more expensive than they were. I would recommend to buy extra and sort through them first. There was some variation in color and some of the tiles had very fine cracks.
Hi Jenny – We literally JUST finished installing 1×2 carrara marble subway tiles on our backsplash. I sealed them last night. :) Not sure how they'll hold up to years of use, but they look absolutely gorgeous. Stylish, yet timeless/classic. We couldn't be happier! The smaller scale tile did end up costing us a little more – $10/sqft – but I think it was worth it for the added interest/variation. we put up marble subway tiles in our kitchen, and i'd do it again in a heartbeat. really pretty veining with gray and a little gold. we got them through the tile shop (http://www.tileshop.com/). here's a post with a decent picture of what we have. good luck!

I utterly fail to understand the recent trend towards tiled walls in kitchens and bathrooms. Grout is hard to clean. Grout on walls = more hard to clean surfaces = more time cleaning = less time living. Why bother?
I suspect in areas with less traffic, the grout doesn't get dirty nearly as quickly as in a bathroom.
Do you regularly scrub your wallpapered walls? Or your painted walls? If you do, then I suspect the tiles are easier to scrub and clean than paint. If you're in a situation where your walls don't get all that dirty too often, then the grout probably won't be too much of a problem.
But the only way to tell is really to sit back and wait 5-10 years to see what people say about their tile walls and whether they're more trouble than they're worth.

Everyone else has loved these, but my sister was going to use them as a back splash, and we did not like at all. Had her tile guy take them down. They were way too spotted looking. She went with the plain white subway tile and it was a much nicer, cleaner look.
We used those same tiles for our kitchen backsplash but we got them from Lowe's. I fell in love when I saw the sample board at HD but the actual tiles for sale were just plain white with no veining. We checked all the stores in our area (just outside Chicago) and it was the same plain white marble tile. I hope you find the right tiles! We have white cabinets and marble countertops that look very similar to the tile.

i used the home depot carrara subway tiles in my kitchen backsplash. they are great but we went through every single box and picked out the ones we liked. there is some pretty big variation in the veining of those tiles. other than that you can't beat it!
