Jersey Shore, Baby!

First of all, I am so happy to be included in this fab group of hot-in-2012-designers featured on Elledecor.com (and a little mention in this month’s issue too!). What an honor! Second of all, today I’m thrilled to be reliving the glory days of suburban living! I’ve rented a mini van and my friend and I will hit the road for some antiquing down the Jersey Shore (a mecca of midcentury furniture shopping). Technically I’m on the clock and working, but I hope to snag some pieces for myself while we’re out hunting. I’ve been going hard for a while now and I think some shopping therapy is just what the doctor ordered!
Here are some of the pieces I’m planning to scope out today.
PS One of my personal rules of decorating: Have at least one piece of mid century furniture in each room, but no more than 50% of the total pieces can be midcentury unless you really (and I mean REALLY) know what your doing. (e.g. Jonathan Adler) To get a good mix, everything else in the room should be either super old and trad or relatively new and either trad or quirky. As much as I love midcentury stuff, if you break the 50% rule, it gets all I Dream of Jeannie/Dick Van Dyke/Bewitched really fast. You know what I mean?
Have you been antiquing on the Jersey Shore? I’d love some can’t-miss recommendations!

  1. I think that's a great rule. I do love a dash of mid century in my rooms. Love the pieces you're checking out. No Jersey Shore tips from this Kentucky girl. Sorry! Have fun.

  2. Congrats Jenny! No surprise here that you're on the up and coming list!! Thanks for the great tip and have fun shopping!

  3. What about if you live in a mid-century house?
We moved here over 15 years ago and came with an eclectic collection of furnishings. I do love a mix but with the renovation have been adding some more mod to the mix.
Happy shopping to you and I hope you find some great items to share with us. I know you will.

  4. I go to Point Pleasant for antiques shopping. If you have other stops in mind, I'd love to know what they are. Have fun!

  5. Point Pleasant has a handful of great antique shops! I hope you will share the places you find too- I'm always looking for new shops :)

  6. I wish I could come! NEXT TIME! and if you ever want to drive down in the summer while Im there, Ill take you to all my favorite spots!

and PS, I could have driven us;)

  7. The Habitat for Humanity Restore in Asbury Park is a great place for quirky finds.. and for a good cause! I'd love to know where you recommend too! I'm in the area!

  8. I'm from NJ, but I've never been deal hunting down the Jersey Shore! Lambertville, though, is one of my favorites for beautiful pieces! I highly recommend the drive out there to check out their antique shops one day!

  9. there's actually a good spot in allenhurst that you should hit up, it's the town just north of asbury where you will almost definitely be shopping. and for lunch, i'd recommend Porta on kingsley ave (1 block west of stone pony). the food is awesome and you will love the space.

  10. Love that rule – Congrats on the Elle Decor feature – you're amazing! Really LOVING/want *that chair* with the upholstered legs! :)

  11. Another town with quite a few antique shops is Red Bank, right off the parkway exit 109. I would've also mentioned Pt. Pleasant and Asbury. Good luck, hope you find some good stuff!

  12. Congratulations! as for your road trip, if you're headed to the Avalon area you should stop by August Farmhouse Antiques. Exit 13 off the Garden State Parkway, make a right onto Route 9 and it's a half mile on the left. Arthur and Larry are the owners and are very knowledgeable (and usually pretty entertaining, too). They're also my neighbors, so I am admittedly biased. If you have time, I'd love the chance to meet you – I'll be next door tending to my shop, which is the blue house with the yellow door called Home Made. Have a fun trip!

  13. Major congrats on the Elle Decor feature. And I love this little piece of advice about one piece of mid-century in each room. Such a good takeaway. You are so right about the I Dream of Jeanie, Dick Van Dyke deal! Perfectly put!

  14. Congrats on the feature in Elle Decor! That is so awesome, but I must admit that I was not terribly surprised and think they are right on the money. You are so gifted with design!

  15. But I love the I Dream of Jeannie/Dick Van Dyke/Bewitched look! I could live in any of the rooms in any of their homes! So I guess I have to have more than a "dash" of mid-century!

  16. Yes! I have recently been hitting up as many antique shops as I can on the Jersey Shore as well. One no one mentioned yet is Bay Avenue Antiques in Barnegat – 349 South Main Street Barnegat Township, NJ 08005

Also, I just drove past a spot I plan to check out in Smithville (just north of Atlantic City) called Days of Olde Antique Center – http://www.daysofoldeantiques.com/Home.html

Might also be worth a stop! Can't wait to hear where you go for some new ideas!
