This is one of my favorites rooms yet!! The family that I did this for are good friends of ours, so of course it had to be perfect. They are young and hip and he heads the company Skullcandy, so I wanted it to have a very unique and edgy vibe that represented them and their lifestyle. This family entertains like crazy…so flow and the placement of furniture was crucial. They also have two little girls and one on the way, so the trick was making it beautiful and practical all at the same time. To be honest, I was really sad when I finished this project, I had such a great time doing it!!
Here are some pictures of the front room.
I love this view of the room, it captures all the unique details that make this room so great! Although we started with a clean slate, I wanted to make sure that it felt like the pieces that we used felt unique and eclectic. Every detail came with a lot of thought! It is a melting pot of styles with pieces found at Anthropologie, HomeGoods, local contemporary boutiques, custom made pieces and local vintage stores…to name a few, to create the overall effect. One thing my client was set on having was a zebra hide. That became my starting point, and was fun…because I could add color to the black and white. We also added all kinds of fun tables to provide a place to set down drinks for all their entertaining.
I had this chair custom made. I love custom made items because you get exactly what you want, it’s uniquely yours, and in most cases doesn’t cost more than buying it. Isn’t the classic houndstooth paired with the sleek lines of this chair great?
The throw pillows and cushions in this room are also custom made. I love an unexpected mix of fabrics!! Fabric and texture are so crucial to a room. The raspberry color is a little unexpected, and so fabulous… one of my favorite parts of the room. I tried to create symmetry in the room by using similar shapes and flow lines, the petals on the pillow and the petals on the mirror. This creates a needed balance.
We used an unusual combination of chairs in this room because we wanted to! I wanted this room to represent my client. Rules are made to be broken.
Don’t be afraid to mix it up!

These old books and urn add an unexpected touch that I just love.

  1. Deborah – To the trade just means that the product is not (easily) available to the public on a retail level. Lots of fabrics and furnishings are made to sell directly to the design trade, who then 'sell' the product to their clients.
As with everything though, the internet has changed the name of the game, and you can get pretty much everything online. You just have to know what to google.
If you do need to order a trade item though, you can just contact a designer and they can order it for you for a commission fee (usually 10-30% of cost).

    xx

  2. Beautiful room! I'm in love with the custom houndstooth chair (reminds me of the mini sofa I made for the 'I'm A Giant!' challenge). And I want to steal that petal mirror, too.

  3. What a cool room! I love how the window frame/shutters go the whole way up to the ceiling. Did she create that or is it original to the home?

  5. This one is really beautiful. Thank you for posting living room tours. I love that each one has been different, but yet I think can still see the common factor that attracted you to them- color!

  6. This room doesn't do anything for me, sorry to say. The coffee tables seem too small and just floating in the room. The books and vase aren't an unusual touch. It's a very common look. The houndstooth is a bold choice but the rest of it is kinda meh. I don't look at it and think edgy, hip, unusual.

Thanks for bringing us room tours. Even if I don't like something it allows me to fine tune what I do like.

  7. Anon- Couldn't disagree with you more! This look like a track home, which can be so hard to personalize! I think Noelle did a great job here. THat black rug is a stroke of genius with that lovely gold sofa. Why comment if you're going to be a downer? Go back to Apartment Therapy and leave personal blogs to the people with manners.

  8. Whats the story with the windows? It looks like someone built a box around them to add some architectural interest to the room. That is a great idea for transforming ugly or boring windows! I'd love to see better pics of them for inspiration!
