My friend, Vanessa, who I went to high school with, did my sputnik DIY in her gorgeous living room (she used the smaller sized Maskros, which looks perfect here).

Guess what Vanessa used to make the rods look a little more substantial?? She cut straws from QT (a convenience store in AZ with the best drink selection ever – rivals Sonic) down the middle, wrapped them around the flimsy rods, and spray painted the whole thing. I love this!

Another improvement on my project: Vanessa painted the backs of the amuse bouche plates to better hide the little white plastic bits. Genius!

Here’s another Maskros hack from the Picket Fence Design blog. It’s pink! and OMBRE! What’s not to love?!

They cut down the petals a little, like I did and then used three different colors of acrylic paint to give that graduated ombre effect.

Another beautiful project!

Thanks so much, ladies! If you have a project you think I’d love, email me at jenny at jennykomenda dot com.

  1. WOW – so impressive – all of them! Love the pink one in particular…thinking it would look fab in aqua in my home one day!

  2. Those look so good! I love the ombre one. I've been thinking about using one for a little girl's playhouse I'm working on. But, I think it just got switched to that pottery barn one you posted on the new home ec.

  3. I think these look amazing and I love their creativity. Using straws is genius! Although the sputnik isn't really my style I love the use of the oversized pendant for your dining room. I'm hoping to achieve the same effect with the enormous Moroccan lantern I bought last year hanging over my dining table. You're always an amazing source of inspiration!!

  4. Your friend Vanessa has the most amazing room! Truly inspiring and just my style! Any idea where she found the gorgeous pink love seat? Thanks for sharing!

  9. I'm another fan of Vanessa's room. The straws give the Maskros a little more oomph which is cool for a different look. I'd love to know about the art on her wall…is that designer or did she possibly diy it?? I'm wanting to get my paint on and this looks inspiring.
