Whether you are currently renovating an old home, or plan to someday take on a huge renovation (me!), or even if you just have an appreciation of beautiful old homes (and amazing decor!!), this book is a great read. Pure eye candy from start to finish, and loads of useful information.

To enter to win your own copy of this big, beautiful coffee table book, please leave a comment here about your dream home. A new build with classic details? A centuries-old townhouse in the city? A charming farmhouse in the country?

After finishing Restoring A House in the City, I definitely would chose a grand brownstone in the metropolis. I’m completely in love with the Greek Revival style especially.

Commenting closes Thursday, February 4 at midnight. Good luck!

  1. Lucky me _ I live in my dream home! It's 165 years old and still needs SO much work to restore and decorate, but we love doing it! I did a Library Hold on this book when you mentioned it a week ago. I hope to WIN it instead!!

  2. My dream home…our home now plus a master bath with a closet and makeup area and a large family room off of the kitchen…It's a tiny old gem nestled in the city but with three little boys we are running out of room :(

  3. My dream house would be one that is old and still retains the original character. It could be an old farm house, a beach cottage, a crafts man or Victorian- i love them all. I just want one to get my hands on.

  4. My dream home would be an old Tudor near the mountains but close enough to the ocean to get there in a few short hours. But, our 1945 cottage will do for now!

  5. I have always dreamed of living in a craftsman style bungalow with amazing oak trees in the front yard. A porch to span the front and a welcoming front door opening up to a home with beautiful hardwood floors. I would love to be able to renovate my future home. Oh to drem

  6. Hmm I"m torn between a classic Georgian townhouse and a 1920's center hall colonial with a greenhouse/sunroom and lovely gardens.

  7. I've always wanted to restore an old Colonial or Victorian. I miss the attention to detail that old houses have and new houses usually lack. I love that every old house has a story and a personality all its own. I have this odd obsession with old windows, where the glass has slowly slid to the bottom, over decades, and the windows are wavy and thinner at the top. Don't get me started on antique doorknobs! Love it all!

  8. I do like the convenience of city living, and remodeling something with a lot of history would be an adventure, to be sure.

But I guess I'm not too picky: I just need a big kitchen. I dream of counter space!

  9. What a fantastic giveaway! My new husband & I just purchased our first home- an 1850s farmhouse on a hill top- and we're looking for ways to use our mix of french/eastern/jungle furniture and decor. We've got tons of work to do and no idea where to start!

  10. I'm actually living in my dream house…it's just taking a long time to fulfill the dream. Our family lives in a 1865 second empire victorian that needs a lot of TLC.

  11. I just spent this morning driving around our dream neighborhood – that is about to become our home in reality! We're putting down roots and buying a house on the bluffs of a historic Mississippi River town. I cannot wait to research the house we buy, restore floors and whatever else needs it, as well as creating a kitchen and bathrooms that maintain the original design integrity. Our dream home is a 1900 – 1930s brick bungalow, Georgian or Colonial Revival with built-ins, transoms and a big yard for my vegetable garden! But the most important element will be the location on the East Side of our city – a walkable, engaged urban community.

  12. Great Give~Away…. at the moment something I owed & Not rented would be great, But I have always loved an Old Arts & Crafts Bungalow ~ I think that would be my dream home….

  13. Oh such a hard question. I'm a novice. I come from loving roots who have no style, and I'm falling in love with design. I have such an eclectic taste that I have no idea what my idea home would be. I'm just now starting to discover some of my own personal style and I'm learning how to make it all come together. Can I just say I'd have a few summer homes and make them all different? I'm in the very beginning stages of learning and loving it!

  14. My dream is to live in a clean wide open farmhouse in the wide open country, but not until after I renovate a few brownstones :)

  15. With the # of comments growing by the hour, I'm sure to put this book on my Christmas list and hope for it there.
I've dreamed of renovations from the time I was a little girl. Now as an adult I would never be able to decide what kind of renovation would suit me best. However, green building is something I would consider and use to the fullest extent. I couldn't decide because I'd rather see where the wind takes me. Whether it be NYC, Hawaii, the country of Europe, or my grandparents home full of sweet memories, etc… Home is what you make of it. Thanks for the tip on such a great read.

  16. My dream house would be a beautiful renovated queenslander, on top of a hill, on a huge rural property. I would keep the doors and windows open year round, relax and enjoy the breeze.

  17. I am a big dork and I want to remodel a 50-70's big old rambler. I love the Brady bunch feel and think that I could make one super hip and happening. If only given the chance.

  18. I'm dreaming of a light gray cottage with white shutters. Gorgeous landscaping, mature trees. The inside is comfy modern, clean but soft and a little rumpled. Pleasantly cluttered, relaxed but filled with only things that I love.

  19. I would absolutely adore a tall, skinny house in the city hemmed in by other buildings, but with its own little front stoop. I'm such a city girl. Alas, I fear my husband may not be so much.

  20. My dream home would be an old craftsman from the early 1900's. My husband and I are planning to buy one in the next few years so this book would be a great resource.

  21. My dream home would be one of these gorgeous old apartments here in Vienna with incredibly high ceilings, French doors and herringbone hardwood floors!

  22. My husband and I just bought our first "dream" home. Currently in the middle of renovation. We love a simple, rustic, kind of vintage look. Awesome book!

  23. I would love a old farmhouse in the country! Why don't builders design homes like that anymore?

  24. I would love to add this book to my collection! My original dreamhouse was a large updated old farmhouse for a large family but now with a couple of kids we are happily living in a cookie cutter suburb a mile from their school. My new dreamhouse is a small craftsman style cottage with a deep front porch for once my kids are grown and it's just me and my cats again.

  25. I love any old house but need a large porch and yard. I particularly like old victorians with packet doors and fireplaces in every room. My dream home would have a fireplace in the kitchen!

  26. Our dream house is only a 10-minute walk from our current house in Ottawa. We could not afford it at the time so we walk by it often to make sure that the owners are taking good care of it for us!

It's a big old yellow brick house and we love it.

  27. For the past 10 years, my husband and I have built 3 "trac homes". Now, we are on our way to a home with history, character, and right in the downtown area of a Chicago suburb. We will be a hop-skip-and-a-jump away from the train, and will be able to walk and get coffee Sunday mornings. Our boys can skip to school, and can come home for lunch every day if they want. My dream is to rebuild and redecorate an old home, and I feel so blessed we are almost there!

  28. I love old wooden doors, not the new flimsy stuff they put in houses. The more the better!

  29. I can see how this book would be so inspiring. My dream home would be Earnest Hemmingways home in Key West. I love the windows at big as doors in all rooms with porches. I think it is designed on the 4 square plan?? Not sure.

  30. My dream house is an old brick house with lots of architectural details and charm that I can restore to its former beauty

  31. I would love this book. I too dream of renovating a house someday. Right now I just stick with with refinishing furniture.

  32. our dream apartment is the one we just bought: a 1900 apartment, in Brussels (BE), 185sq.m., original parquet floors, big French windows and neverending corridors – and SO empty. inspiration very much welcome :)
