Looking for a quick and inexpensive way to spruce up your entry this weekend?

When I was helping with my mom’s living room updates, we decided to painted the inside of her front door black and we both love the difference it’s made in the room. Suddenly her front door has a presence…

Before

After

This was a very fast project, accomplished in a single afternoon. Just a couple coats of black semi-gloss interior latex paint. (She also switched out the old light fixture for this sassy polished nickel chandelier from Lowes that was on clearance for $37)

I hope your weekend is already off to a great start!!

love,
Jenny

  1. Looks awesome!
I had thought about doing the same thing at our house. Now I can show my husband this when he questions my sanity! ;-)

I'm still thinking I may try oil-based, but good to know you used semi-gloss.

  2. I keep thinking that I should paint the inside of my front and back door, but they are such a part of the room, I hesitate. Funny. It's just paint. Maybe this weekend I'll do it! I did just paint the front of the door and really like it!

  3. Love it! This has been on my to do list for awhile now…I was hoping to get to it sometime this fall. Thanks for posting about the kind of paint you used, I was wondering about that.

My parents actually painted all their inside doors high gloss black (closets, bathrooms, etc)…it looks amazing! It has such like a european manor type feel or something. Thanks for sharing:)

  4. It looks great – and doesnt't your Mum have a lovely hallway. My front door is an original 90 year old door but its mostly glazed – I live in an Australian california bungalow. So one for the idea book, not this house

  5. That looks really great! It made the door really stand out and look very elegant, sleek, and sophisticated. It's so funny how such quick changes can make such a huge impact. I save this to my inspiration folder!

  6. I did this as well about a month ago. It makes such a huge difference to my "foyer"! It makes it seem so much bigger (but in reality is just big enough for the door to swing open). Grey tinted primer saves a few coat of the black paint topcoat.

  7. I LOVE that door! I would never have thought of that and now I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate it :) Thanks for the inspiration! ~K

  8. Looks great!
The inside of my front door has bugged me for years. It's painted white to make it just "go away", but that's sooo boring! I'll bet I'd be much happier with a color. Thanks for the inspiration!

  9. Looks great! The first thing I noticed besides the door was the pendant and I thought, oh, that looks kind of expensive….so I was very surprised by the tiny $37 price tag! Beautiful!

  10. I did the same thing recently to our front door, but used a hi-gloss black paint from Benjamin Moore. It totally transformed the foyer. Great minds think alike :)

  11. We're in the process of renovating/decorating/etc our home. I keep trying to figure out what I can paint a glossy black – I love this! Each update you do on your moms home gives me that little twinge of jealousy. Looks fabulous!

  12. Love the black door and the chandelier :-)

I had thought of painting our doors black or dark brown a few years ago. I finally bit the bullet and painted them dark brown last spring. I wish I'd done it sooner, because the dark doors are SO much better than the white doors!!

  13. I totally bought the same pendant for my breakfast nook! I get more comments on that than most things! I'm glad someone else found the same great bargain! :) Have a great day!

  14. Love the black door (we did ours black immediately when we moved into our apartment 6 years ago!) but I do think that it definitely gives the space a much more contemporary vibe which I don't think really goes with the painted wooden mirror…

  15. Oh, love it love it love it – your earlier post on painted interior doors has been haunting me; can't wait to own a home to get busy!

  16. Could you tell us the name of the pendant at Lowe's? i can't find it on the website and I love it AND love the price.

  17. i agree with joni… all the doors painted black looks great. i had it in an atlanta townhome. the difference is stunning. i'm dying to paint all my doors black here in my seattle house. pam

  18. Looks fabulous. I painted our interior front door black and totally love it. We have a much smaller entry space than your mom's, with much less natural light, and only one sidelight and I still love it. It really adds some detail to the hall. I made the mistake of painting the one sidelight's trim black too and that was a big mistake, made the door look off centre (I like symmetry). I left the door black and am in the middle of changing all the trim back to white.

  19. How amazing! I did this in my rental with faux black leather contact paper because everything was too beige. It looks amazing and peels off once we move. Pics are up on my site.

I can't wait till I have my own house to paint the doors. Thos O'Brien is notorious for this and I love it!

  20. I have a similarly situated entry way and I've considered painting the door a chalky gray, but for some reason never thought about black. Until now, that is. Wow, what a difference a little paint makes. That looks fantastic and now I'm chewing at the bit to take the leap. Thank you, as always, for your brilliant ideas!

  21. It looks fabulous! My condo has a black entry door that was already painted when I moved in. I originally intended to repaint it something more subtle, but I've grown to love the look. It's fun to see how a black door looks in another space!

  22. wow! that entry way looks fantastic! i love black doors {& shutters outside}. it really did make a huge difference!

our front door could definitely use a coat of something!

  23. My ever-patient husband agreed to let me paint the inside of our front door black. YIPPEE!!! I just hope that my entry winds up as beautiful as your's. Thanks so much for the inspiration and I adore your blog.
