A few years ago, my mom and I were shopping for furniture at an awesome store called J&K in Phoenix that carries new and used home goods. There we stumbled across this Swedish Mora clock knock off.

It clearly was not an antique and it was not in the best shape, but the price was right (less than $50, I think).

It was time to finally update the clock during mom’s living room redo. I sanded everything carefully and then gave the whole body two or three coats of Martha Stewart’s “Bedford Gray” – a favorite shade of mine. I think it’s the perfect non-boring neutral.

After the base coats dried, I trimmed out some of the moulding in a creamy white to help the details stand out a little more.

Then we put the clock back in the living room and suddenly we liked it 100x more! I love how a quick paint job seems to fix everything…

  1. I noticed this clock in the post on your mom's home transformation, and admired the lines. It is interesting, even the antique clocks are often given a new coat of paint, as the old coats have worn off.

Great project! You should post it on 'Between Naps on the Porch' metamorphosis Monday. Whenever I have a transformation project, I always post it over there – I love to see how people change things around.

  3. I've wanted a Mora clock forever but I'd take this one in a heartbeat. Love your blog, Jenny.

  4. I have LOVED Martha Stewart's "Bedford Gray" FOREVER!!! The clock turned out wonderful! Great job.

I do have a question… In the post about your mother's living room re-do, next to the piano there is a taupe-ish pottery garden stool… I have been looking for one for awhile and all that I have seen are pretty pricey (Like close to $100)… I am just wondering if you have found them anywhere for a good price? And if so, if you would be willing to share the place — I would LOVE IT!!

LOVE your blog… you always get my head buzzing with all the projects that I want to do!!! Thank you!!

  5. Reminds me of your family's traditional Christmas story about the clocks. You'll have a visual aid when you read it this year, even though it's not a coo coo. :)

  6. Love it! I recently purchased a similar vintage secretary, and I have been wondering if you have any suggestions as to how to decorate the shelves? My room is full of antiques, I'd like to modernize it a bit. Thanks!
