Vintage Fabric

One of my favorite things to do is search for vintage fabrics on eBay. Most of the time you’ll find small remnants – just enough to make a pillow or two. But sometimes you hit the jackpot.

Today I won this auction for 10 yards of vintage Schumacher (please excuse the horrible seller’s photo). I love the birds and I’m a sucker for greens. I paid about $2 per yard. Not bad! I’m thinking there will be a fabric-as-wallpaper project in my future…

Maybe for a wall in our bedroom? It would be like a poor-girl’s Chinoiserie paper.

Or maybe the dining room?

If I have a hard time “installing” the fabric, I could always just upholster some large art canvas to hang on the walls.

Here are some more noteworthy vintage fabric auctions:

Love these stylized roses
I think this fabric looks just like a Liberty of London print. It might in fact be one (priced at an eighth of the cost of Liberty fabrics!)

This blue and green also has a Liberty vibe.

Cool feathers and roses

LOVE the purple/aqua/lime roses

{Can you tell that I love stylized flowers?}
green with roses, perfect for a dramatic dining room!

This retro print is crazy cool and could be perfect in a hip bedroom with lots of white and clean lines.

Awesome zigzag

This normally expensive print was featured in the Domino Book of Decorating. It would make a fabulous pillow or bolster.

Love the aqua, black and white – so dramatic!
Who doesn’t love a great bamboo trellis? This would look SO cute in a little girl’s room!
There’s lots more to be seen here. Remember though, the key to pulling off a vintage fabric in a room is to mix it in with lots of current/new fabrics. Happy hunting!

  1. You’re lucky you found the Schumacher fabric before I did! I would have bid you up!!

Can’t wait to see what you do with it!

  2. Very fun fabric. Aren’t you excited you got so much? It would be so fun to cover a wall, BUT if that gets to be too big a project, I love the look of that covered canvas you showed.

There were many shown fabrics I could get giddy over, but I really like the purple/aqua roses.

  3. This reminds me of the wallpaper that lined my grandparents hallways… I wonder if it was Schumacher too because this looks almost identical!

    What a fun purchase!

  4. Love it! All I can say is I am so glad you didn’t post the one that bid on a couple a days ago:-)

I give you props for being an expert ebayer and craigslister.

  5. The only problem I have with the aqua, black, and white fabric at the end is that I think my mom had shorts with that print in the 80’s. :)

I like your bird print. The canvas idea is a good one, and I think you should borrow it rather than trying to fight 10 yards of fabric. Plus, you can take it with you when you move.

  6. I love vintage fabric, too! So, how would you do the “chinoiserie” thing? Would you tack it to the wall? I am so curious to see how you will do this because I’ve thought of doing similar, but couldn’t figure out how to get it to lay smoothly. Can’t wait!

  7. How fun! I love vintage fabric as well. My grandma is a seamstress and her attic is full of fabric. Asking her if I can “browse” is on my to do list. :-)

    Love your blog!

  8. I love that you plan to do a fabric-as-wall-paper treatment! I’ve read about it everywhere but never read anyone who has – you know done it – which seems sort of key to me.

I’d love to hear how it goes or, if you’ve read/seen people’s results, to see them.

The fact is, we rent a one bedroom, wall-less, door-less apartment (it’s loft style with the bedroom upstairs) so despite the skylight and the sliding glass door, I cannot get enough natural light into the space to combat the awful beige walls…but the landlord wont let us paint, so some fabric wall paper would be the perfect solution…I just hesitate to be the person who tries it out :P

  9. How do you put up the fabric as wallpaper. I think that that’s a great idea and I wouldn’t mind doing that for my apartment next year.

  10. Have you heard of mounting fabric on the wall with liquid starch? I confess that I’ve not tried it myself, but it doesn’t look too difficult and the big plus is that if you ever tired of it on the wall, you can take it down (with no damage to the wall), wash it and use that same fabric for another project!

  11. The plan is to use liquid starch to mount the fabric to the walls. We’ll see how it goes! You can count on a post all about the project, but it will be a few months from now, after we move.

Anyone else have any experience with using fabric as wallpaper?
