I’m still in love with framed butterfly collections. Some of you were creeped out by the idea (and I suggested this paper cuts version), but I still like something a little more real-looking.
Recently I was at Michael’s picking up some frames for a project and I spied a whole section of faux butterflies that were actually quite pretty! I think a framed collection of these would be adorable in any room, but especially in a nursery or a play room.
OOOooo! Jenny! Our girl loves butterflies and would go nutty over these, too. We did just add some paper ones in her room—frameless though.

But I'm keeping these bookmarked for another project.
I read this book about the butterfly world; The Dangerous World of Butterflies by Peter Laufer. I thought it was fascinating. For me, I would be inclined to only purchase fakes, or if I had the money qualified antiques.
They look quite good. I need to have look where I can buy them in the Netherlands, as I could only find the real ones! x Femke http://www.femkeido.blogspot.nl/
LOVE this idea. I am doing a piece for a customer who's theme in the baby's room is butterflies…forwarding her this idea!
Jenny you have to check out BGs Wholesale on the corner of 28th and 6th. They have an entire floor of butterflies, birds, etc… Its pretty amazing. I have to keep myself from buying too much ribbon.
I too think I am going to do this. I generally hate butterflies but I honestly love the look in the shadow boxes. Weird, I know!
A few years ago, I was in charge of creating the decor for a gala at the school where my daughter danced and I used twigs, branches, and butterflies, tissue paper flowers and twinkly lights. My budget was slim but it looked so beautiful.

I love this idea and it is timely since I am heading to Michaels today. I may have dragged my sister-in-law and mom in front of the computer yesterday to go through your entire blog with them! They loved it, so much good (affordable!) home decor tips
Have you seen Christopher Marley's art? http://www.formandpheromone.com/
I oddly love the ones with the beetles so much, I can't wait until prints are available because I think they photograph just as well as they look in the shadow boxes.
Ahhh I did this with these exact butterflies (the small multi-colored package) but didn't get it posted yet!!
I used these on a cake for my daughter's butterfly birthday party…so girly & sophisticated at the same time.
I realize the post is about butterflies, but the ceiling in that first picture is AMAZING!
It's been way too long since I've been to Michaels- those are awesome!! A few friends are expecting in the next couple months, these could make sweet nursery-decor gifts!
What a sweet idea for a little girl's room!
And oh my goodness, in high school I hot glued a pin onto a faux butterfly to use as a hair accessory! I (thought I) was so chic!

What a great idea! I love butterfly art but don't want the real ones. This is genius :)
Happy Wednesday!

I love these! Filing this away for future use! Thanks for sharing!
Great idea! Real butterflies are just gorgeous. If bought correctly, they can promote conservation of species and habitats.

Love these!! Just about this time last year I created my own faux butterfly display box with laser cut butterflies from etsy (another great alternative to the real deal): http://www.pepperdesignblog.com/2012/02/15/living-room-update-butterfly-shadow-box-art/
I just started re-hydrating and spreading butterflies for myself and to give as gifts. Dehydrated butterflies can be pretty inexpensive. This is where I got mine:

When I was a designer for a gift company (picture frames, aprons, tea pots, ect.) I once went to a product fair in China and had to help pick 30 or so butterflies for these kinds of packs for my company to sell… only 30 from thousands of these butterflies! I wish I could have taken a photo. It was amazing. There are some really pretty ones out there. Maybe Michaels was at the fair too :)
In the right place, this would be so cool! I think fossils, bones, bugs and other odd natural elements can be such interesting decor. I'm bookmarking this post for future DIYS :) thanks!
I love this!! I have something very similar from ikea hanging in my living room now. It's always the first thing guest comment on.
Love this! I have an antique Moth one that my Mum got me for Christmas. It would be lovely to add to, and make a little collection. Great idea. :)
fabulous idea Jenny! Love the unique and colorful ones. I like them in shadow boxes- a very cool art alternative!

I actually bought some of these awhile ago at Michael's. I bought a shadow box and put some fun design paper in the back and glued the butterfly in. I put it in my daughter's room. It turned out great! I love that it made the butterfly pop a little more and it just wasn't a plain white background.
The butterflies are one of my biggest loves :)
Actually I can't wait to set some butterfly-themed party for children!!!
If you like butterflies, have you been to the Butterfly & Nature Conservatory in Key West? So amazing – butterflies are everywhere! And of course there is a gift shop filled with lots of this kind of stuff, too.

Wonderful idea is this Jenny! I love animals and nature so having these butterflies in my room will surely make my morning happy and lively.
I 've used these butterflies from Michael's and they look great with a little gold leaf pen detail too!
Very cute! I recently purchased a watercolored butterfly from this Etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ecocio?ref=pr_shop_more
It turned out even more lovely than I expected, very realistic, and I feel much better about having it in the frame than a real one. ;)
