New Headboard for the Master Bedroom

I’ve been planning on making my own upholstered headboard for our bedroom for a while now, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. Then recently I was looking on Wayfair for frameless mirrors for a project when I stumbled across this headboard. It was less than $250 for a queen, which is not a whole lot…

Then recently I was looking on Wayfair for frameless mirrors for a project when I stumbled across this headboard. It was less than $250 for a queen, which is not a whole lot more than the cost of supplies for making my own tufted headboard.

I was seriously so impressed with the quality of the headboard when it arrived. I thought I would have to mount it on the wall like some of the cheapy ones out there, but this one comes with two height-adjustable legs, which is great because it’s a pretty heavy piece. The color is a sort of khaki brown (a little more olive than these photos). I actually don’t mind the color in the room, but I bought a couple of yards of this deep oxblood velvet remnant from my upholsterer, and I’m thinking it would be a breeze to recover this thing in like an afternoon.

I was wearing one of my favorite nail polish colors (Essie’s Wicked) when I bought the velvet and my upholsterer was like, “soooooo… you really like this color, don’t you?” #awkward

The color is pretty in here though, right? With a brighter brass on the nailhead I think. Or maybe polished nickel nailhead…

  1. This looks so beautiful Jenny! It's going to look even more stunning in oxblood, I think.

May I ask what brand of bedding you have in this photos? It looks very luxe.

    Thank-you!

  2. Your bedroom looks absolutely lovely and very cozy with the dark paint on the wall. And to echo one of the early comments, I'd love to hear where your bedding is from, too!

  3. I can't believe you got that for $250, such a great price. I kind of love the color now. I think it works greta in your room with all those rich hues.
But I also love a good oxblood, and I think it would look nice as well.
    Good luck deciding!

  4. Beautiful! Love the oxblood with maybe the nickel…the bedding is beautiful, too! Can you tell us about the little doors near the window? I love the texture they, and the dressers, bring into the room.

  5. Love the headboard! Do you think that it could be mounted to a bedframe and pulled away from the wall? I can't have a bed flush against the wall in our bedroom, and I've always wondered whether that precludes head boards. But then seeing what you did in your sister's room made me wonder whether it is possible to mount a headboard to a cheap frame. Stunning as usual!

  6. Jenny, the headboard looks great in your master bedroom! I love the dark cozy feel of the room too! What a great find on Wayfair :)

  7. I love the dark red fabric in there too! And the headboard really does look like it's well-made.

What is that cabinet-looking thing in your window?

    1. Those are shutters. Lots of old rowhomes in NY have them, and they fold back into the sides of the window space when they're open (as shown).

  8. I think the existing color looks good. Kind of matches the wood tone. However I'm reminded again how much I love the Navy walls with that painting and the orange accents. Sigh.

  9. My mom, sister and I notice quite often that when we go to the yarn store, we always come away with yarn that is similar in colors to what we are wearing. I guess that says a lot about the mood we were in when we got dressed that morning!

Like Maryanne said, those cabinet-looking doors are shutters! We have them on all the windows that face the front of the house and they all need a little love (can't believe I haven't gotten around to this yet!). They are so nice to have though – we use them every day.

The bedding was a TJ Maxx/Homegoods find! Super score.

Unknown – I don't know that any headboard would work well without at least part of it touching a wall for support. If you can even have a corner against the wall, it could possibly work! Good luck with that!

The color on the walls is Benjamin Moore's Anchor Gray. I love it. It definitely swings a little blue, especially in rooms that don't get a ton of natural light. It's nice and cozy though!

  11. Pretty! In this case I would say the navy, though bold, is almost a neutral. I think it would be totally worth reupholstering it with the red for a richer look. And don't worry about the colour thing- why not enjoy the stuff you love?

  12. Love the headboard! I'm actually a big fan of the color it currently is, I think it works great in the space. The red would definitely make it more of a statement piece though. Either way, I love it!

  14. The oxblood is very nice, but I kinda like it as is in the room. The combo of brown and blue has always worked for me. In the pix, the brown works with the chest and the color of the folded back window shutters. Perhaps you should save the oxblood for when you HAVE to reupholster the headboard, since fabric headboards almopst invariably require recovering sooner or later, what with hair oil stains, etc.

  15. BTW, I went back to check, otherwise I would have included this in the just posted comment: What about making the lamp shade the same color as the wall, in a shiny gloss finish. It would make the white base more dynamic and give a luxurious gleam to the room. It would also reference all the blues around it, including the splash of blue in the art above the lamp.

  16. Funny, I just bought my daughter an upholstered headboard from Wayfair back before Christmas. I even inquired about the color because it looked like it might be leaning toward lavender in the photos, but they claimed it was a gray-beige. Um no. When we got it, it was a pale gray-lavender. But, I actually really like it the way it is. Adds a little something unexpected to her room. I like both fabric choices for your headboard. Good luck!

  17. I actually like the original lighter brown color against the dark blue walls. I'd think the darker oxblood wouldn't stand out enough from the dark walls.

  19. I think it would look gorgeous with the velvet, but I kinda like the current color as well. I DO like the antiqued nailhead trim, but I'm sure you could easily make it shiny by using a little alcohol to take of the finsh and polishing them. It all looks very high quality.

  21. Hi! I stumbled across this room and love it! Was curious if you could tell me the name of the headboard at the link just brings me to a page of headboards on wayfair :).

    1. Hi Crista! This post is a few years old now and I don’t think that headboard is available anymore! So sorry! Skyline furniture sells similar profiles though!
