I’m a big fan of old encaustic tile used in kitchens (I’m using a repro version in a laundry room project). This kitchen from Kristen Buckingham that features the prettiest encaustic floor tiles, will always be a favorite of mine.
So I was excited when Jessica from the Eagle’s Nest blog (and the woman behind this amazing hardware line) emailed to share this cool project she tackled in her kitchen. The brave woman glazed her concrete floors:
And stenciled on a geometric pattern (with several layers to the pattern!) and then gave the whole thing a glossy seal. Jessica gives the full rundown on her blog here.
I love the after photo and think the pattern on the floors really brings that space to life. Great job, Jessica! :)
If you have a project you’d like to submit to be featured on LGN, email us.
Absolutely beautiful! I have wood floors, but I'm considering a similar technique for the stair risers on the staircase that leads out of my kitchen. Stenciling is such a pain in the you-know-what, so I want to start small!

Wow! That's an impressive floor! Beautiful.
Wow – how beautiful. Could be great on a porch or patio with even more color. Thanks for sharing her blog – love her style.
wow that's amazing!
So much patience! x
This is so major I cannot even take it. Pretty sure I would lose patience with this project after the first square. It looks incredible!
That is AHHH-MAAAAZZZZING! Really incredible job. I can't imagine the time that went into that.
Thanks Jenny! Actually the floors are plywood but it would definitely work on concrete too.
That is STUNNING! Oh how I wish we could get all of the horrid black linoleum glue off of our floors so we could do something like this, too!
We need to replace our old linoleum in kitchen but I couldn't figure out with what (wood, modern tiles – just didn't feel right). Now I know what I want!! The encaustic floor tile is just gorgeous!
Jessica did an amazing job and man what patience that must have taken!
WOW! such an amazing DIY.
yummy. that was a good one.
That stenciled floor is incredible! It looks like actual tile. I cannot even begin to imagine the number of hours that went into that project!
That is such an amazing idea! I'm thinking it would be a fantastic way to dress up the concrete floor in our basement laundry room…or the whole basement, for that matter! I'd have the fanciest workshop floor ever. :)

One of my favorite DIY's! Love a painted floor!
I'd like to do this on my carpeted kitchen floors and give them that cool leopard pattern. It would look like a really neat big cheetah print.
Learned a new term 'encaustic". Check ~ learned something new today! Love the floor. I stained the concrete in my studio with layers of natural tones & thought nice job! Nothing compared to this…stenciling! Stenciling several colors & a pattern…in a room she will see everyday all day! Brave & talented girl indeed.
That is impressive! Wow! What beautiful floors.
I love the first kitchen you posted I've had it saved for awhile! These floor turned out absolutely beautiful and completely transformed the kitchen!!
Love this! Maybe I will find the energy to redo my concrete floors in my office. These are really wonderful!

Amazing! I could have NEVER pulled that off… wowowoosa!
I would never ever allow anyone to step into my kitchen – ever – after that much effort. Those are beautiful!

Oh my, I would be far too afraid to ever try this at home. Excited to have found your blog! (www.blairsays.com)
Love this! What a wonderful way to adapt the idea of using encaustic tiles in the kitchen :)
HOLY COW! she needs an award of some sort for this work. WOW
Very impressive floor and congrats for that good job! Pantry Doors
looks awesome!
Very impressive and beautiful.
Dedication = gorgeous floors. Bravo.
I saw this same project on the Rachel Ray show yesterday, except instead of tile, they stenciled a cheap rug. Its great to see the range of possibility!
I have just added a mudroom/utility space to my house and dream about doing something funky and fun with our concrete floors. Do you have a resource for a softer encaustic type TILE? I really don't think I have the patience to stencil. Such a beautiful post, thank you for sharing! -Jessi in North Florida
Wow! Amazing job. It totally adds a new element to the room.
