I’ve been on the look out for the perfect container to use as a mold for this project. I really want to copy Lindsay from Everything LEB and make one of these beautiful papier mache trays.
Here’s Lindsay’s tutorial.
She used Martha Stewart’s Araucana Tea lightened with white for the turquoise outside and a gold spray paint from Krylon for the interior (but she and I agree that the best spray paint is not Krylon. My hands-down favorite line is Rustoleum, especially for metallics).
I’m going to make a bunch of these to have on hand for hostess gifts. Pretty dishes and trays are so fun to put on just about any flat surface. Use them to corral soap dispensers at the sink, jewelry, house keys, candy, business cards, loose change, remote controls, paper clips, hair ties, perfumes…
That's really beautiful, I love the gold. This one's on my to-do list!
I love this… Lindsay is always so creative.
Such a great idea! Turned out fantastic
Beautiful! What a great hostess gift idea!!
that is excellent.
Love these!!! I want to make some, too! Please show us your efforts when you make some!
What a great idea!
I'm so glad you loved my little project! You have to send me pictures of the ones you make for hostess gifts when you are done :)
this is so simple and so beautiful…best of both worlds. thanks for posting!
So lovely, the gold makes them look so much more than papier mache!
You're right – it's a GREAT hostess gift! Thanks for the idea
so great. I have a question…do you remove the take out container or leave it covered with the paper. In other words, is this just a mold, or do you cover the whole thing, leaving the container incased in the papermache?
This was such a great project/
Also I am wishing I could see you speak @ ALT. You will have to do a recap.
AMAZING and so great for hostess gifts, party favors, anything! What a great idea

Great idea, shows really well. Sometimes you can find little plastic trays like that in the craft section at dollarstores. They are used for coralling beads and such. They might make a great mold.
What a fun idea! I'm going to keep this in mind for gifts.
I absolutely love this- might have to actually attempt this one..it's just so pretty!
I just saw the question from flip flop and fancy free and I figured I would answer quickly, hope you dont mind Jenny :)
The take out tray was just used as a mold, in other words I used it to create the shape. Once the paper dried I removed the tray to use again. Hope that helps!
I love this tray…!
Please send me one and I'll photograph in my room and feature it!
You should sell these! I'll buy one!

Oh I love this! I have done the same thing but with bowls. I spray paint the insides with gold and then gold leaf them. Makes it looks even fancier. And they are surprisingly durable! Very fun DIY!!
side note–that's the best blanc de chine lamp I've ever laid my eyeballs on…
Love it! Thanks for posting this DIY….gives me a fun little project to look forward to.
This was a brilliant project by Lindsay! Janell
Another great idea! Thanks. I find so much inspiration from your blog. I have had my eye out for a tray to go on my ottoman. I think I will give this a try!
thanks Lindsb for the advice! I can't wait for this DIY!
What a great idea! Doesn't look at all like the projects made in grade school!
This looks so good!
I love those trays! I saw that tutorial a while ago and I have it on my to do list. Such a cool (and cheap!) idea! Thanks for reminding me :)
Thanks for the help on the container question, Lindsay. I think I found the perfect bowl today to use as a cast! Yay!
Coco – I love these too! I don't have plans to make and sell them, but it looks like an easy enough project to try on your own? There's a link to Lindsay's instructions in the post.
Good luck!!

Love this! My neighbor & I are going to make them! Thanks for the share! ~Margaret
