In between taking care of kids, working and blogging, I like to find time to dream about decorating our next place. As you can imagine, that ends up being about 0.005 seconds per day.

I’m starting fresh with our home decor (good for me (and you!), bad for husband). I love to change up the fabrics in our home often (pillows, drapes), so this go-round I’m making all the foundation pieces super neutral – gray, white, black or beige for the rugs, sofas, chairs and tables and many of the case goods (though, I still love me a red credenza or two!).

The color will come in with lamps, art, painted mirrors, curtains, pillows, skirted tables, things that are easier (relatively) to switch up when I get bored.

Remember Domino Editor in Chief Debroah Needleman’s apartment? Yeah, sort of like that. But a little more color thrown in, cause, you know, it’s still me.

I’m not looking to copy the apartment exactly, but in case you are, here are some ways to achieve the same look:

1. Crate and Barrel’s Petrie ($1599) or Custom Sofa Design’s Paramaunt (starting at $599)

2. PB’s Henley rug (on sale now!)

3. CB2 Peekaboo coffee table ($249)

4. Pretty Pillows
John Robshaw for a splurge (this one’s on my list)

Fabricadabra for affordability

5. Bergere chairs (don’t forget to check eBay and Craigslist first). I love how these chairs look in velvet.

6. Python tray (12″x19″, $38)

7. Don’t forget the baby grand piano. Oh, yeah, I would do it. And my neighbors would hate me.

  1. Yep, I like that, I can live with that. I might want a brighter couch – with kids and a dog and all – but I love neutrals as a base and pops of color to change, according to my mood.
    pve

  2. Her place has always been one of my favourites. I like how there's so many individual pieces in very different styles and yet they complement each other perfectly. Its a wonderful classic space!

  3. My husband and I are currently living in TX (temporarily away from the home that we actually own in KC) and I've been making the SAME plans for our place back home! I really want to decorate such that I can change up the style and feel rather easily. So excited to get started!!!

  4. The piano comment made me laugh. We just had the piano from my parents' home moved to our home. Even though we live in a house in the suburbs the neighbors have commented on my 2 year old's concertos ;)

But I think there is something so warm about displaying instruments in the home.

  5. Hi Jenny,
Love your style, since you are starting over…Are you having a garage sale before you leave? I don't live too far :)
    Thanks

  6. I agree about the garage sale. It would be amazing! Even though I don't live close ;).

I love this room and how you put it together for less!

  7. i can't wait to see what your new place will look like! if this post is any indication i think i'll be in love. thanks for the link to the cb2 peekaboo table — it would have been perfect for my lucite post yesterday!

  8. I can't believe how pretty rhose pianos are! There's nothing close to that here. :( I'm excited to see what you come up with. :)

  9. That looks great Jenny. But i wonder how much artwork is too much? How much color is too much? I am in the process of decoreating our dining room (long and narrow with no windows). Do i have to address all the walls? Like hang art/ mirrors on all the 3 walls?

  10. Yes, D. Needleman's work in Domino is some of my favorite too. Does it bother anyone that the 2 Henley rugs are slightly off from each other? Is that considered good design? I'm no pro…I'm just sayin.

We have a grand piano in our smallish home, and would LOVE to see some more ideas of how to situate it/design around it! So I'm excited to hear you might be faced w/that task. I'm sure you would do it beautifully. I'm a big fan of neutrals w/a pop of color, so I'm also excited to see you pull this one off too. :)

Yay for you–cute place in the city! How fun!

  11. the couch is my favorite in this… ahh a baldwin. i would die for one. here is the thing- hers looks SO comfortable. the crate and barrel one looks stiff and not very inviting, ya know? where do we find a baldwin that looks JUST like the couch in the photo? i've been searching for awhile and i don't know where to start.

  12. What a lovely and creative space you've created here; thank you for sharing!

If you’d like, please stop by my blog for a chance to win a fine art photographic giclee print…by me :)

  13. love everything you've selected – your plans look great. i have that python tray and adore it – goes with everything and adds a little 'something something'.
