Whether you are currently renovating an old home, or plan to someday take on a huge renovation (me!), or even if you just have an appreciation of beautiful old homes (and amazing decor!!), this book is a great read. Pure eye candy from start to finish, and loads of useful information.

To enter to win your own copy of this big, beautiful coffee table book, please leave a comment here about your dream home. A new build with classic details? A centuries-old townhouse in the city? A charming farmhouse in the country?

After finishing Restoring A House in the City, I definitely would chose a grand brownstone in the metropolis. I’m completely in love with the Greek Revival style especially.

Commenting closes Thursday, February 4 at midnight. Good luck!

  1. Oh my goodness this looks AMAZING! My fiancee and I were just foolish enough to buy a 100+ year old home in Chicago and save it. Unfortunately it needed some pretty extensive renovations and most of historic character had already been stripped. We have managed to save what we can, though. I love living in a city that values it's historic built environment, because in these days resisting the urge to tear down seems harder than ever!

  2. My dream home would be an old but totally restored southern plantation with huge, open rooms for plenty of family gatherings and parties. And the decor would be a perfect eclectic mix of all of the styles that I love!

  3. My dream home would be an airy, sunny apartment with hardwood floors, exposed brick, and a long sweep of built in bookshelves.

  4. I have a degree in Interior Design and I have always had a love of Craftsman Bungalows. They are so well made and have such beautiful details.

  5. I just bought and moved into a new home with my boyfriend (our first individually and together) in midtown Atlanta. We love our location and our new home, but one day dream that we can renovate a large farmhouse in the country – perfect for future children!

  6. I wouldn't mind a newer build with classic details: real hardwood floors, crown moulding, exposed beams in the ceiling… {sigh}

  7. i restored a 1907 Victorian in Savannah several years ago and I'd love to do another project. It is so gratifying! Love the older architectural details (late 1800s – early 1900s) with modern touches that make it a little unexpected.

  8. VMost certainly a victorian with amazing bones, lots of sunlight and a wood paneled library. We had the opportunity to buy just that house a few years ago but as first time home buyers, shied away from the amount of work it would require (electrical, heat, water, all new bathrooms, rotted out sub-floors just to name a few). Instead we bought a colonial that needed a little less work just a few blocks way and a couple bought the huge old Victorian.

In the intervening years we have done quite abit of work to our colonial and learned that we are more skilled than we once thought. As we've learned the finer points of drywalling, electrical, and other home repair skills we've realized we should have bought the Victorian.

You can only imagine our shock when the house recently came on the market. The owners were tired of all the work their Victorian required decided enough was enough. Sadly the house went under contract in a day (for the full asking price). We got to see a brief glimpse and were variously impressed and horrified by the changes the owners made.

Mostly we were just regretful that we underestimated our own abilities. Though we are also thankful that our own house requires much less work that the Victorian. I guess why they call it a dream house!

  9. Without a doubt, my style is a old renovated barn with nothing but open space, and modern fixtures. I love the stripped wood, knotty pine thing, but there also need to be quirky elements like exposed rafters, and funky dutch doors, etc.

  10. My dream is to restore an older home Greek revival home with a large front and back yard.

  11. I just told my husband I think we should move to the country so we could live in an old farmhouse. I love the 'old' style with the 'new' amenities…good insulation, windows, plumbing and electrical.

  12. A home with many surprise nooks & crannies. There was a house featured in HBeautiful a couple of years ago in which a family in NYC "found" a small room that had been boarded up. They installed a ladder up to the secret hide-a-way room and filled it with pillows and a reading light for the kids. DREAMY!!

  13. how do you pick your favorite style home? I love so many different styles- old ranch style homes, large beach front properties with just the right amount of character, Charleston homes with large porches, an urban modern oasis from an old brick warehouse. The one characteristic necessary for my dream home is age and with age comes character! I love the work involved with enhancing the character of the age!

  14. My dream digs would be a run down fixer upper townhouse in the city, a few stories, and a quaint little terrace that I can hang twinkling lights and have fabulous parties at, an urban oasis! Great giveaway, thank you!

  15. My dream house is a Crafstman with a big porch and nice sunny yard. Original woodwork and tiled fireplace please!

  16. My dream house is a small-medium size place in the city, old enough to have charm and fun details. My current home is a work-in-progress but it has a lot of my requirements!

  17. The old house is so dear to my heart. I love the city because I have a heart for restoring the city and bringing those in the community of all social economic class together. We live in a 1918 historic house with the creakiest stairs ever which is something I never want fixed. I love open floor plans and carved out entrances and little details. Lots of light flooding through the kitchen and living rooms. Kitchens are love of mine. I love the open shelving and the milk glass lining the shelves. I love to research who has lived in the house decades before us and what they might have experienced. If we didn't live in the city I would love to live in a shabby cottage on a country side and I would do decorate the inside in white/offwhites,and ofcourse we would have to shave our black lab for that to work. :)

  18. My dream home would be a beach bungalow with awesome views of the ocean. A place where you can kick back and eternally feel like you are on vacation!!
    Thanks!!!
    Wendy-

  19. I am renting a little cottage in Northwest Alabama. It dates back to the Depression. I think I fall more in love with it each day…

  20. i love the idea of being able to recreate a house with a story and a history and make it my own. whether it be a brownstone with creaky floors and tall ceilings or an old farm house with quirky bends and twists previous owners built to make it functional.

  21. honestly, my dream home is an actual free-standing house. Not a HUD townhome (although it will do for now).

i'll leave the decor dreaming to other days … now I'm dreaming of just a place to call my own…

  22. I have had my eye on this book. Having grown up in a mid 19th c home that my parents renovated, it is my dream to renovate something similar–late 18th century. Thanks~

  23. townhouse in the city, original parquet flooring, moldings everywhere on a tree lined street with brick streets!

  24. We live in an old home, built in 1920, and I love the old, English charm of the house. Every alteration we've made has been with careful consideration and yes, love. Whenever I drive into the driveway, it appears to glow from within and that makes me so happy!

  25. My dream is to remodel an old home in Columbus, Ohio's Victorian Village district. They are exquisitely beautiful, and a lot of them have fabulous architectural details from the Victorian Era that have been preserved over the years. I would love to transform one of these old homes so that I experience the beauty of what they would have looked like in their heyday. They also contain lots of old surprises like dumbwaiters, bookshelves over the bathtub (?), and servant quarters upstairs that would be a storage dream come true.

  26. this book looks fantastic. We have remodeled (but I wouldn't say restored- we didn't have enough money for that!) a century-home in PA, and someday we would love to restore a farm house!

    beautiful pictures!

  27. I'd love to live in an early 20th century bungalow-style home and add some modern touches, while keeping the warmth and originality of the home.
