Whether you are currently renovating an old home, or plan to someday take on a huge renovation (me!), or even if you just have an appreciation of beautiful old homes (and amazing decor!!), this book is a great read. Pure eye candy from start to finish, and loads of useful information.

To enter to win your own copy of this big, beautiful coffee table book, please leave a comment here about your dream home. A new build with classic details? A centuries-old townhouse in the city? A charming farmhouse in the country?

After finishing Restoring A House in the City, I definitely would chose a grand brownstone in the metropolis. I’m completely in love with the Greek Revival style especially.

Commenting closes Thursday, February 4 at midnight. Good luck!

  1. since we just moved into a real "fix-er upper" my dream home would be anything that doesn't leak, creak or need painting! :)

  2. Oh my goodness, I would LOVE this book!!

This is the question my husband and I endlessly debate (he's finishing his Ph.D. right now, so we've had a few years to think about what we'll do with the rest of our lives…). We've decided that we'd love to do a post-doc in the city for a year or so, but we'd like to end up with lots of land–a farmhouse with an established orchard would be just right.

  3. This book makes me think of our first home, which was a cottage-style postwar home in an AWESOME Minneapolis neighborhood. Drive down the streets–under a canopy of massive oak trees–and you can just picture all the GIs with their families in 1948. :) Coved ceilings, crystal doorknobs, ceramic tile bathroom, oak hardwood floors, stone fireplace, picket fence. Perfection.

  4. ONE dream home? Hmmmm, too hard. Like my decorating styles I have many. I would love a brownstone in the city, a cottage at the beach (complete with screen doors, shutters, and outdoor shower) and a beautiful cabin in the woods while a huge part of me would love an aging stone farmhouse in the Cognac region of France. Lots of decorating in my future, huh?

  5. A little cozy quaint old farm house on some beautiful acreage where we just settle down on is my dream. Especially after moving again and again in the military. If only we had the time, money, and I can convince my hubby. Hopefully one day! Some of those hardwood floors are absolutely amazing.

  6. Wow! I would totally love this book! It would give me encouragement to sell my uninspired condo and get my dream house – a 1920's bungalow (with minor repair work needed-I am but one woman!) with a yard for my beagle, Cinder. We would love to curl up and look at the beautiful pictures!

  7. I'd like any house that I can afford! Living in DC makes that extremely difficult. I'm sure when the time comes I will be happy in anything that is ours and I will be able to decorate to my hearts content. This book would inspire!

  8. My husband and I are going to be looking for a home soon — my dream is to turn an old farmhouse into a home….I would love to have this book!

  9. I would love to be back in New Orleans in an old shotgun house. I just love some of the features of many of the uptown homes, such as floor to ceiling windows, original wood floors, and double hearths! It makes me giddy just thinking about the sophisticated style.

  10. I have lots of housing dreams – an apartment in Paris near the Jardin de Luxembourg, complete with one of those black metal scrollwork railings on the balcony…a farmhouse in Vermont with steep eaves and a big front porch…But perhaps my ultimate dreams is the very first house my DH and I bought, a sweet little row house in New Castle, Delaware. I still have dreams about walking into that house.

  11. I'd love to have something old with loads of character like hardwood floors, glass doorknobs, and tons of detailed trim work! Doesn't matter if it's in the city or country:)

  12. My dream home is a classic white colonial with huge windows and loads of architectural detail. And it would be surrounded by a huge yard filled with flowers and trees and a soft green lawn.

  13. i live in the rear building of a carriage house in the west village which was built in the 1800s. if i could live anywhere, i'd stay right here, but i'd renovate and take over the other apts in the building because mine is only 200 square feet! talk about living small!

  14. I love your blog! I check it everyday for great decorating tips. We are just buying our first home and this is all so new to me that I take all of the ideas that I can get! I want my home to be unique, each room with great style, I just don't know where to start. This book would be a great jumping off point. My dream though is to have an old farmhouse, restored with a beautiful red barn in the backyard.

  15. Our dream home is casual but beautiful….rich mouldings, interesting niches, warm and comfortable, a place for friends and family to hang out, with a big farm table that always has room for one more!

  16. My dream home is any house that is restored or renovated or built by the 'This Old House' crew! A view of the ocean would also be lovely.

  17. My dream house would be a farmhouse on a nice secluded plot of land. I would love to restore and old one or build new using re-claimed materials. That last picture you posted with the wide plank floor is beautiful!

  18. What gorgeous photos! That kitchen is to die for!

I would love nothing more than to own a lovely old brick house in the city centre.

  19. Our dream home would be an older home (circa early 1900's) in the wonderful, charming neighborhood of Belmont, in our favorite city in the world: Charlottesville, VA. The proximity to restaurants and shops is appealing, as is the natural beauty of the area. My husband and I are both UVA grads, and we both feel a special connection to the area. Thanks for the giveaway!!!

  20. since moving to new york city a few years ago, i constantly dream of renovating a big old brownstone on the upper-upper west side or in brooklyn. it even kept me from sleeping last night! i just couldn't stop thinking about it! =)

  21. My old house (1925 bungalow) is a love-….(hate is a strong word) – perhaps labor of love with a healthy share of frustration. Some renovation projects have been planned but many have not – and I find more and more time passes before I can make any decisions with projects (front bathroom had no sink for 2 years!)- I need inspiration to replace my exasperation. Blogs like yours and the ones I have found from LGN certainly help – yet I can easily blog my day away without a single decision, but many fun rabbit chases. Would love to continue making progress and have some great ideas to consider outside of cyberspace,

  22. I would love an old colonial with a wrap around porch, with all sorts of original details to restore, in the middle of acres of land in the country.
    Someday!

  23. I moved into my dream home! A 1953 mid-century modern. It's wonderful, but needs some definite updating. We have only just begun…..

  24. I would love a partially renovated craftsman home where there is still some left for us to do but not too much. But, those brownstone photos are amazing–I could live there!

  25. I would love any house that has old wood floors, painted tin ceilings, and lots of architectural details. Preferably in a nice big city!

  26. Hi Jenny,
If I could pick, I would choose an OLD farmhouse in Virginia somewhere, complete with history, classic style, and lots of kids!
    Love your blog!!
    Anna

  27. I grew up in Brooklyn (though not in a glorious brownstone, alas). I now live in NC, but often think about returning to NYC and living in a beautiful old brownstone that can be restored and updated. I would love to get my hands on that book for inspiration. Thanks for hosting, and I love your blog!

  28. My husband and I are currently doing a top to bottom renovation of a 1930s bungalow a few blocks from the texas shore. It has been an awesome experience introducing modern touches in this character-filled house.
